Fidel Castro, who has long been a walking, talking anachronism, is stepping down after nearly 50 years. Laughably couching his announcement in the language of democracy, he vowed that "would not accept another 5-year term as president." I guess 10 consecutive 5-year terms was enough, eh?

Perhaps now another stale anachronism can be laid to rest, America's Eisenhower-cum-Teddy-Roosevelt policy toward Cuba. Raul Castro, who will presumably take over for his brother barring some unforseen development, has announced. Obama has said that he'd sit down with the Beardless Wonder, and has suggested liberalizing travel restrictions to the island, and other voices are suggesting phasing out the embargo if Cuba meets certain standards.
That being said, the free-market vultures are already circling, and I'm positive there are vintage-1961 plans being dusted off to reclaim the casinos and sugar plantations for American business interests and to install the corpse of Fulgencio Batista as President of Pepsi Presents Cuba.
