BREAKING: Democrats.com are making us look bad.

Tue Mar 11, 2008 at 08:18:28 PM PDT

I Just got an email from  Democrats.com

Sign the petition: http://savespitzer.com

Dear Governor Spitzer,

Don't let the Republicans and the rightwing media drive you out of office!

You made a lot of powerful enemies in your career because you took on the most powerful crooks on Wall Street. Now your enemies are trying to get even by destroying your career and your life. Don't let them! .....

Now I live in NY and worked to help get Spitzer elected - but he must go. You can't run as a reformer - the top cop and then go break the law - I don't can if the Republicans play dirty - let them - Spitzer screwed up - he must go. (more below the fold about why Spitzer leaving is a good thing.) Democrats.com is making a big mistake by defending the indefensible and it hurts all Democrats - tell them to stop.

Reasons why Spitzer resignation is a good thing.

  1. He was already damage goods due to trooper-gate (it a local thing).
  1. David Paterson will replace him as Governor - and he is a class act - a Democrat we can be proud of and will actually be able to get stuff done in Albany (NY's capital)
  1. Spitzer in office would ruin the Dems chances winning back the NY Senate - with Spitzer gone the State republicans will not have it as an issue.
  1. We can tie Spitzer resigning to David Vitter and Larry Craig - and continue to paint the Republicans as corrupt and hypocritical.
  1. Democrats maintain the high ground.

By supporting Spitzer and his Hypocrisy Democrats.com is making us look bad and undercutting all their other good work - Please contact  Democrats.com at contact and tell them to take down their petition.

    •  Let he who is without sin cast the first stone (0+ / 0-)

Hypocrisy is the tribute that vice pays to virtue

When I was in college, I recalled, there was a story about the German philosopher Max Scheler. Scheler was known for inspiring ethical meditations with titles like On Man's Place in the Cosmos. He was also, according to this story, known for his energetic philandering. A distraught admirer approached him about this discrepancy: how could he write all those noble, morally uplifting works and yet lead such a discreditable personal life? The response attributed to Scheler is illuminating. The sign that points to Boston, he said, doesn't have to go there.

In effect, I noted, Scheler was defending hypocrisy. He was saying that the ideals he articulated were more important than his personal failure to achieve them.

Spitzer has a noble heart within the frailty of a human body.

Democrats.com is an independent thing. From their FAQ:

        Are We the Democratic Party?

Democrats.com is completely independent of the official Democratic Party and its elected officials and candidates.

We are an online community of grassroots Democratic Party activists that was launched in 2000.

We do not speak for the Democratic Party in any way - we only speak for ourselves.

BUT, he did NOT run the ring, he was NOT an owner/operator of the ring, he paid for SERVICES from a beautiful woman.

What he prosecuted when he was AG were the financial operations of these services.

He did NOT set up one of these services to gain benefits from the financial mechanisms.

He had sex with a beautiful woman. That cost him a lot of money.  His OWN money.

or it doesn't matter what you stand for.  At some point you will fail the people that depend on you.  Hillary is a good example.  She did a lot of good things in her career, but she has let a lot of people down and now a lot of people could get hurt because of it.

        •  Spitzer has an excellent moral center (0+ / 0-)

But he whipped people with his moral superiority and it came back to bite him.

He paid for sex with a beautiful woman with his OWN MONEY.

He should, and will, face the consequences of doing that.

But, you do not crumble him up and toss him away because of it.

to change the laws. You're arguing to not enforce them. We are a nation of laws (in theory, pre-Bush), and we follow the law. When we break the law, we face the consequences.

But Spitzer wasn't making a statement like King was when he openly broke immoral laws. Spitzer went to great lengths to hide his acts. What's more, as AG he convicted people for doing exactly what he did. You may see that as a non-sensical pseudo-moral law, but it's OBVIOUS that he didn't. What he did was wrong and he knew it was wrong and he believed it was wrong.

Now, if you think it's wrong, go openly hire some hookers and make your stand. I'm fine with that.

There was an article in Newsweek about human sex trafficking all over the world. Don't get me wrong; what Spitzer did was wrong. But I think that the Republicans are guilty of selective outrage -- where is their outrage at all the human sex trafficking going on around the world? And for that matter, where is their outrage over Vitter or Craig? The only reason the Republicans are following this double standard is because of the D after his name.

the "they do it so we can to" line of thought. Spitzer needs to resign.

Republicans think sex trafficing is funny. I wrote a diary last year about the hilarity at Free Republic when a a sex trafficing ring was broken up with many of the girls 12 or 13 years old..but they were just Mexicans, so they liked servicing 20 men a day. Repukes are so racist that they think the lesser races are so hyper sexed that they have what's coming to them.

      •  Well, I agree. (0+ / 0-)

He is an embarrasment to the party, and an embarrasment to everything that we have ever fought for. It seems that he tried to cover his tracks in a way that was illegal -- that makes it worse than Monicagate.

      •  Now wait a minute... these call girls were not (0+ / 0-)

exactly "exploited" in the manner those Mexican girls were.

These call girls are, very likely, PhDs, CPAs, JDs, well-educated beautiful women who make more money in one year than many people will ever earn in their lifetime.

I would label these call girls almost as courtesans-in-waiting.  There are many famous women who have "serviced" rich and powerful men.

Doesn't make it right, and it's a complex issue, but Eliot Spitzer did not run a sex trafficker ring.

    thanks for the heads up.

I don't care what capital letter is next to your name: if you break the law, especially while in office, you should give up your elected position.

It's a shame that Republicans have a double standard, imo, which is why the likes of Vitter and Craig are still where they are.

Spitzer should quit as the appropriate thing to do in this circumstance, not because the RWNM is calling for it.

      Hmmmm?

I smell a serious double standard here.

The Governor of NY hires some trade, and comes clean about it.  Bill Clinton lied to everyone, and y'all fought like hell for him to stay in.

      WTF?!

Both should be able to apologize and keep their jobs, unless something else is off.

Spitzer screwed a prostitute...he didn't play hide the weinerschnitzel with his lady friend. He committed a crime.

The circumstances are a bit different.  Also Bill Clinton wasn't railing against people who were unfaithful, and acting like he was the best husband in the world.  Spitzer actually prosecuted prostitution rings.  That makes him a hypocrite, not just your average politician who is screwing around.

All politicians are crooks at heart.  Question is, is he our kind of crook or a really, really bad guy?

mistress is different than hooker...he was hiring hookers, which is a crime, as much as it can be argued it's a stupid crime, it is one.

If it was just a mistress, no one would care.

who does a business deal and then goes away.

Mistresses involve feelings and they take away time from the family and wife.

Mistresses are expensive. And they sometimes get pregnant.

And mistresses are difficult to get rid of... if the "feelings" should ever fade.

      •  There is no chance he will stay. (0+ / 0-)

Zero, zilch, nada.  He's just negotiating the  terms of his departure and trying to settle any criminal charges.  Expect him to be gone by this time tomorrow.  Didn't think it would take this long but it's gonna end soon.

      •  No chance (0+ / 0-)

he has become the laughing stock of the state. Every radio station in NYC and Long Island have been making fun of him today. If it wasn't WPLJ's paraody of "Love Potion #9" (Client #9) or Z100 doing a whole segment having wives call in asking them if they'd stand by their men like Silda, or WKTU playing OneRepublic's "Apologze" and dedicating it to Governor Spitzer or another radio station, don't remember which one, doing a "Spitzer Resignation Watch" every half hour or so...he's a running joke. He can no longer govern this state effectively.

Spitzer stuff (god damn him!), if he resigns as I believe he should, should be thrown back in the rethugs face over and over, pointing out the hypocrisy of having a convicted Senator sitting in the halls of OUR congress and a Representative who was caught in the DC Madam scandal still in office.  Oh yeah.

to be president one day....as a populist social liberal.....

with an absolutely DISGUSTING foreign policy...

a total neo-con who boasted privately that he was
more of a hawk than george w. bush.  spitzer said in 2003 many many times that nominating howard dean would result in a landslide defeat in 04 because dean opposed the iraq war which aipac loving spitzer supported.

what is taking so damn long to have this creep resign?

one last kiss for the maids at the gov's mansion??
