The Last Straw - an Epiphany

Tue Mar 11, 2008 at 08:18:44 PM PDT

I honestly couldn’t decide who to support for the nomination after Chris Dodd dropped out. I really, really couldn’t. I was so proud to be part of the Democratic Party during this historic primary season. I was so completely unable to commit to either candidate that I couldn’t even bring myself to caucus for one or the other on Super Duper Monster Tuesday. I still hadn’t decided as late as last week.

But now, I’ve made up my mind. And with such conviction that I cannot believe it took me so long to pull my head out of my butt. What finally did it for me?

The claiming of 35 years of experience didn’t do it...
The SNL skit didn’t do it...
The Somalian picture didn’t do it...
The "Is Obama a Muslim?" answer didn’t do it...
The "3am" ad didn’t do it...
The offering of the #2 spot to the #1 candidate by the #2 candidate didn’t do it...
Even the Ferraro comments didn’t do it...

It was the moment today, right after work, when my brain connected all of these things together. I realized that Hillary has run a Republican campaign. She’s used every Rovian tactic in the book, and even a few things that would make the Swift Boaters blush. The math makes it nearly impossible for her to win with the support of the people, and she seems hellbent on taking the Democratic Party down with her when she finally falls. Rove must be so proud.

At the same time, it occurred to me that Obama represents a new kind of politics, even if I don’t fully agree with him and really wish he’d be more aggressive in his healthcare policies. He represents what the Netroots have been trying to do since Dean. He is truly people powered, and seems to have no emotional attachment to the Old Guard. Clinton represents politics-as-usual. For her, it’s all about winning...nothing else, nothing more. It’s not about what’s best for the party, or the country, but what’s best for her and her machine. She is stuck in the old smoky-room mentality where the party elders decide who’s going to be the nominee, and she can’t seem to handle being beat by the people. She’s determined to bring the party down with her when she goes.

After Iowa, I put some serious thought into who I wanted as a candidate. I landed in Hillary’s camp to begin with, for no other reason than I wanted a woman in the White House. I know I was being sexist, I admitted it then, and I admit it now. On all policy questions, I felt the two candidates balanced out; that both had shortcomings and both had strengths and that they were roughly equal in the big scheme, and that either was light-years ahead of anything the knuckle-draggers would pull out of their asses. But I couldn’t bring my self to caucus for her because I knew my reasons were impure. I loved Obama’s vitality and charisma, but knew that if I caucused for him, it wouldn’t be because I thought he was the better person, it would have been because I didn’t want to solidify my sexism by voting for the woman. (I had some regrets about my lack of caucus initially, but since Obama won my precinct by such a wide margin, one more vote for him wouldn’t have mattered.)

Now, I’m so set against Hillary and her tactics that I am actually disgusted with her. At first, when she began her scorched-earth campaign, I made excuses for her. I told people, and truly felt, that I was still all for her, but just didn’t like the people she was surrounding herself with. Then, today, in the midst of my epiphany, I realized these were the same people she’d surround herself with in the White House, and I just couldn’t handle it. Having Mark Penn on your campaign is a judgment call, and a bad one at that. And that’s her judgment.

I was truly, madly, deeply, and still am, in love with the thought of a woman in the White House...just not this woman. I am beginning to understand the people who say they won’t vote for her in the GE, even if it means McCain will win. I would never, ever, say or do that, but I understand how they’ve come to that drastic conclusion.

This isn’t meant to be a "your candidate sucks" diary. I do not fault people who support Hillary. That’s the beauty of democracy. The purpose of this diary is to chronicle the thoughts that crossed my mind before and since finally choosing my candidate.

So, FWIW, I hereby endorse Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination, and of course, the presidency.

For reasons I won't go into here, I am registered as a Republican, so I didn't have to choose either one in the primary (FWIW I voted for Ron Paul); I figured I would fully throw my support behind whichever Dem won the nomination.  But at this point I am pretty disgusted by the Clinton campaign.  You have really hit the nail on the head with this:

I realized that Hillary has run a Republican campaign. She’s used every Rovian tactic in the book, and even a few things that would make the Swift Boaters blush. The math makes it nearly impossible for her to win with the support of the people, and she seems hellbent on taking the Democratic Party down with her when she finally falls. Rove must be so proud.

I will still support her if she wins the nomination, but certainly with much less zeal than I would Obama.  Let's hope she comes to her senses before she does destroy the party.

and convince your fellow Republicans.  They can support his campaign financially  They can make phone calls and walk neighborhoods.  Let's begin to transform this country from hatred and division to a nation of citizens in common purpose.
To again make this a government OF THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE.
      GO on...get out there.  ;-)

I think there are some oddities about Clinton's finances..I don't buy it that she has raised some 30+ million dollars in a month.. I don't buy it..I have been looking at her finances at the FEC website and I like looking at the disbursements schedules..I caught this on Schedule B.  Can anyone tell me why Grunwald Communications would be recieving this many checks in the amounts that they are in on January 2, 2008?  Look at how many payments are made to Grunwald Communications on January 2, 2008 and the size of the checks...does this look normal to you.??

          •  I am giving you the link to Clinton's Schedule B (0+ / 0-)

which is Disbursements...If you look towards the last pages, you will find refunds...also..which are very odd.  A diary was posted on Sunday at about 5:24 pm which posted the resignation of one of Clinton's financial people.  She said that she was shocked to learn that her credit card had been maxed by the campaign and that this caused her to have over $400 in charges .. she didn't know they had maxed out her VISA card and dropped the money into Hillary's coffers..after reading that diary.. I started looking at the Schedule B again.. which are disbursements..and sure enough..there are dozens and dozens of "donors" who have been refunded lots and lots of money...way over the legal limit for campaign contributions.. like the employee of Hillary's campaign.. she did not know until her personal banker brought the fact to her attention that she was way over the legal limit for campaign contribution..

I am not understanding what these checks to Grunwald are all about..this is way too odd..it seems to me that the campaign would cut one large check .. I think someone familiar with auditing campaign finances would be able to explain this .. or question what is going on here...

there are literally hundreds of checks cut to Grunwald Communications on January 2, 2008.  Hundreds of checks..Why not cut one large check to Grunwald Communications so that they could disperse checks to various vendors for media buys or whatever..this is odd .. other than it is odd, I don't know what to make of it..but I don't buy that she is raising that much money..nope..she isn't...one of her finance people quit after learning that Hillary's campaign was maxing out peoples' credit cards and there are a huge number of refunds in large sums of money..

  •  I went through a similar process... (7+ / 0-)

... although I got disgusted about a week ago. It's amazing what you learn about people's true natures when they're under pressure. I feel like crying. Two months ago I thought we had two wonderful candidates and I would be happy with whichever one won. Now I watch Hillary fighting and clawing in a way that shows that her highest goal is her personal advancement, not the good of the party or the positions she purports to espouse. It's pretty sad and frankly sickening.

Of course I'll still vote Democratic whatever happens but the joy will be out of it for me if these tactics allow Hillary to win the nomination.

My one hope at this point is that Obama will not stoop to the same level.

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies..

  •  I felt the same way about Dodd (6+ / 0-)

For me, he was the best candidate and when he was out, I thought about it for a while and decided that for the next generation, my daughter's, that we need to find a new way.  And that settled it for me, there was no one other than Obama to make that happen.

I'm glad that you've also come to this conclusion.  I also hope that you'll volunteer to help him win the next set of primaries.  I'm hoping to do canvassing in PA myself.

I was truly, madly, deeply, and still am, in love with the thought of a woman in the White House...

    and then:

    just not this woman.

I am in Clinton's demographic, too.  Middle-aged woman, but only recently got a college degree.

    I
    just
    can't
    find
    it
    in
    me
    to
    support
    her.

I hope she doesn't get the nomination, but if she does, I'll hold my nose in November.  I just hate the thought of voting for the lesser of... again.

What happens to the Democratic Party before November is a huge concern at this point.

Good diary.. you spoke what's in my heart.

........................................ one GREAT thing about the last month is that Clinton's phony liberalism (see: Mitt Romney) has been exposed and the rather shrill line of those of us on the left -- that the Clintons are utterly unprincipled pols intent on personal power for its own sake -- has been more or less validated. It's nice to see people catching on to the simple fact that just because two people voted more or less the same way on a number of bills on the floor of the US Senate, it does NOT follow that they are interchangeable or equally reliable on controversial issues. One of these is UTTERLY UNTRUSTWORTHY. The other may not be perfect, but there is, to coin a phrase, hope...

I don't think this hurts the party in the long run. Think of it as cow pox that Obama must and will overcome that will give him an immunity to the Republican hate machine's small pox virus in the fall. When Obama figures out how to deflect the "telephone ad" now, it will give him a very small learning curve in the fall when McCain's handlers try the same shenanigans...

As for health care, neither Obama nor Clinton have the right answer to the puzzle; but the result will more nearly resemble the Clinton plan than the Obama plan because she will be in Congress helping write the legislation, and the 2008 Democratic tsunami is going to give them a 2 year window to get it done. And Obama won't be vetoing that... So don't sweat that detail too much.

In any event, I enjoyed your piece.
