          Third: Well, of course, we had it tough. We used to 'ave to get up out of shoebox at twelve o'clock at night and lick road clean wit' tongue. We had two bits of cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at mill for sixpence every four years, and when we got home our Dad would slice us in two wit' bread knife.

          Fourth: Right. I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulfuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing "Hallelujah."

          First: And you try and tell the young people of today that; they won't believe you.

          All: They won't!

                    But I also think Clinton is counting on us knowing that.  That is, there are moments when I think that back of this is some cold-hearted, old-fashioned triangulation at work. But I worry they're counting a little too much on  the Democratic wave, and the "better anyone than another Republican" feeling.  My father-in-law will shift Dem to vote for Obama.  He will not, emphatically will not, for Clinton.  And he's more open-minded than most of his buddies.

                      I agree...DLC = "bi-partisan" political cancer.

                      The liklihood of gaining a filibuster proof majority this next cycle will be, IMHO, dependent upon the top of the ticket. HRC carries much more negative baggage and will result in greater polarization at the polls--net consequence is down-ticket and ultimate net gain on the legislative side.

                      This doesn't mean D-majority will lose, but it does impact its power in both houses through the following cycle.

                    The only way to win is not to play.

                    Its the same as the game theory any bully creates. Surrender to me or feel less pain. If you surrender you will again face this dilemma and experience pain. But each time the unwise choose to avoid immediate pain and thus ensure intense longterm pain. The solution then, as now, is to stand up to the bully and accept any immediate pain. Thus not only ending the bullying but providing an example for any future would be bully.

                    You defeat this disgusting type of person by standng up to them. And yes it might well be painful in the short term. Thats what being an adult is all about.

                      I fight bully's and have done so for a living--personally I despise them and never shirk from a warranted brawl--which we're in.

                      That aside, game theory also includes "Prisoners Dilemma" in its "iterated" form (Axelrod 1984), which posits that purely self-interested stategies are less effective over the long-run.  Instead, the better long term game theory strategy with repeated encounters proves to be, in essence, a cooperative and conciliatory approach coupled with measured "equivalent" responses. This is perhaps too esoteric for your point, but truthfully, I think Obama is following this later game theory approach and much more successfully than a simplified "mutual assured destruction" stategy.
