Obama asks us for help

Sat Mar 15, 2008 at 08:33:12 AM PDT

Obama needs our help.  He's asked us to forward and email this video for him.

In the video he responds directly about the divisive remarks of his pastor(and though strongly support Obama - I find his pastor extremely offensive)  Please don't make excuses for the pastors hateful remarks.

We've got to realize though that this is Obama's pastor views not Obama's. Please help him by forwarding and posting this video.

I don't usually post such short diaries but felt that this was important enough to call attention to it.

The video is on Obama's website.  If anyone knows how to embed it here, please do so.

Please help Obama

  •  Few people believe (0+ / 0-)

that these are Obama's views.  What's harder to believe is that he wasn't aware of them even after being a member of the church for 23 years.

    •  So what if he was aware of them? (1+ / 0-)

Will someone please tell me what Wright said that was so offensive?

      •  then he lied to America (0+ / 0-)

last night when he said on every interview that he was not.

Nobody believes that.  He is insulting our intelligence.

garbage that has been pumped into our houses (and brains) 24/7 by the White House, Rove, Faux, Drudge, Novak, Hannity, the Clinton race baiters, Mark Penn, etc., I think it timely that this bullshit get called for what it is is.   It's bullshit.

Who here hasn't thought many of the things that Wright had said at some time or another?  Maybe we haven't had a congregation but I know that MANY of us would have said similar things at times...and would have loved a congregation.

The HRC supporters here know it's bullshit.  If they don't, they have serious problems.  Rather, they are gleeful about the possibility of Obama taking a hit.  Seems pretty sick in my book to endorse such tactics, which when thought about, really do undermine free speech and the American liberal tradition, but they have to live with their consciences and duplicity.  Myself, I call it bullshit.

Man, you said it.  Maybe they aren't racists, but they have no problem reveling in it and exploiting it.

I heard some of his remarks on KO last night and I thought, "Yeah, so?"  I didn't hear anything that particularly offended me.

you think those clips represented the scope of his thoughts on faith, family, God, community, social justice? There is no evidence that the subject and tone of those clips was the same in the many many many other sermons he has given throughout his life.

Where are other clips of Rev. Wright?  I do think the ones that have been cherry-picked are pretty bad.  A compilation of his more angelic moments might be nice.  I wonder if anything like that is out there.

who the fuck hasn't felt that way with Bush in the WH?  Really and truly.  Who didn't feel that way when Bush got reelected in 2004.  If only for brief moments?  This is bullshit.

As I said above, the hate, divisiveness and fear that has been pumped into our homes, heads, and hearts on a 24/7 hour basis is, in my book, infinitely more harmful than Wright's statements.  Personally, I think that HRC's tacit approval of the race baiters in her campaign is infinitely more incendiary and damaging to this country but nary a friggin' peep was issued by her supporters here...save for one or two.

This faux outrage is really, REALLY unbecoming.  Sanctimony generally is, of course.  But let's be realistic.  This is a schadenfreudic outburst of glee from the HRC supporters.  Not because they give a shit about Wright or what he said but because they think that Obama can get tarred be these statements and brought down.  Let's get real and then we can deal with what's really happening.  Honestly.

People are free to be offended, but god damn America...you have been sucking for the last few years.  It's not a lie.  And black men and women are treated horribly.  This is news to people?

This man is old and has been through a lot most likely.    He served his country.  I don't think Rev. Wright is a bad person who hates people.  I think he said some things he shouldn't, but I think he probably had justifiable anger in the world.

        Here's what he said:

"The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing 'God Bless America.' No, no, no, God damn America, that's in the Bible for killing innocent people. God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme."

Are you proud that we treat our poor and sick as less than human?  Are you proud that we act like God's chosen country, with the right bomb others into "democracy"?  Are you proud of killing innocent people in Iraq.

Wright's "God damn America" was a rhetorical statement, and a conditional statement.  He was saying that if this country is going to do these things, then "God damn America."

Take out the rhetorical device of "God damn America" and Wright said EXACTLY what MLK said on many occasions.  Get off your high fucking horse.

...when we launched this phony war in Iraq.  I damned it when we re-elected that fucker bush.  I damned it when our government stood by as people drowned in New Orleans.

If you didn't, then you're a real fucking patriot, aren't you?

        •  I wouldn't damn America (0+ / 0-)

          Her President, her government, sure.
          Her people, never.

          •  "Her people"... (0+ / 0-)

...voted for bush twice, backed this fucking war in Iraq, and goes to the mall rather than give a moments thought to the crap bushie and the republican crime syndicate have been doing for seven years.  This is a democracy, bub, imperfect thought it may be, and we've got to take responsibility for what our government does.

            •  Well bub (0+ / 0-)

Her people voted for Bush only once and I've never said all the people are perfect. But I wouldn't damn all the good people just to condemn the bad.

              •  Yeah, you're right about... (0+ / 0-)

...electing bushie only once.  My bad.

But this guy Wright is old enough to remember Selma, and the fire hoses, and the dogs, and the lynchings.  I'd be bitter, too, if I were him.  MLK said the same things, he really did, but it was MLK's strength and his greatness that he wouldn't succumb to bitterness.  I'm not as good a man as MLK, and I guess Wright isn't either.  But I can't fault any man for being bitter about what was done to Wright and his people.

    •  For me... (0+ / 0-)

The god damn America did not offend me.  What he was saying is true mostly.  He just said it in an offensive way.  I don't think the things about Hillary are fair.  She's a rich white woman, but she's still a woman in a man's world.  The aids misinformation is offensive, but otherwise it didn't shock me at all.  I've had preachers say worse.  Didn't agree with them, but didn't run out of the church either.

to try to understand a point of view different from your own. If we are going to unite this country we have to understand why it's divided in the first place.

There are some folks who hate this nation.  Wright is one of them, as are those on this site who agree with him.  They have the right to say what they believe, but if you think this can be any part of a winning presidential campaign, you are deluded.

Some of his views are not bad if said in a less offensive way.
