            Everything runs and very little fails.

            The underlying Microsoft problem is process architecture.

            Vista relies on internal structures called "pipes" that provide FIFO queues for internal information.

            That would be fine, but popping data into queues means that it comes out in the same first-in-first-out order. Not always what you need. Over reliance on pipes brings on bug problems.

            MS has programmers trained to write to detailed specifications that define interfaces between the modules.

            But many of the modules are only "stubs" when early code is getting written. Any change, later, requires rewrites.

            Linux is Open Code.

            No "stubs." No pipe definitions, where proprietary limits prevent teams from understanding what is going on down-stream.

            Microsoft has adopted a crappy way to develop operating systems. And its a bureaucracy, so they're not going to change. Lots of very bright, very well paid programmers -- pushing rocks up mountains.

            Linux ??? Oh, yeah. Open code, open testing. Wide open module interfaces with stable technology.

        I have a Xeon based PC and I waited for the first service pack plus the standard clean-up time.  Finally broke down and bought Vista.  The damn thing won't let me install the 64-bit version, because the current version is 32-bit.  Asshats didn't have a 64-bit option available when I bought he 'puter, since they were trying to finish Vista.

        Now I am stuck with a under performing computer because of them!

            The inside-Vista indexing is a mess.

            We tossed Vista. Reinstalled XP for the desktops and all the way back to NT4-SP6 for TomCat-Apache apps/web servers.

            "Fuck 'em" is being polite about it.

            I do hate losing some new TomCat release stuff. Gotta see about what's possible there.

            BTW: we wouldn't put a production server other than the Oracle Enterprise Manager system on MS for love nor money.

            I like sleeping at night, 'cept fer rolling over time to time to interfere with the wife's beauty rest....

    i was at the ob's a week or so before christmas, and i said, gosh i wish i could have a bit of wine christmas eve.  she said "go ahead!  have a half glass whenever you want"!  

    the next month, my grandfather died, and after his funeral we were all hanging out at my uncle's house.  he said to his daughter - get j. a glass of wine.  i said 'just a half glass'.  my cousin, bless her heart, pulls out some 24oz cup from the cupboard.  not that i couldn't have used that much, but, i did ask for a smaller glass.  i was a horrible traveler while i was pregnant.

          That's it, thats all.  Do what you wish with your body.  It's a free country.

          The majority of women drink during their pregnancy unknowingly and there are no consequences.  There are women who drink heavily during their pregnancy with no consequences.  

          I was taught and advise my patients that no one knows what the right amount is.

          Where is the diagnosis?  

          I guess the CDC and Frist go hand and hand.

          There is no known amount of alcohol that is safe to drink while pregnant. All drinks with alcohol can hurt an unborn baby. A 12-ounce can of beer has as much alcohol as a 5-ounce glass of wine or a 1-ounce shot of liquor.

          • There is no safe time to drink during pregnancy. Alcohol can harm a baby at any time during pregnancy. It can cause problems in the early weeks of pregnancy, before a woman even knows she is pregnant.

              His or her experience might have given them the anecdoctal evidence that they need to give you that advice.  

              I am a new physician and so I try my best to go with what the evidence shows.  Not surprisingly there's not much testing out there with alcohol and unborn fetuses!  What I know is that there is just no conclusive evidence that there are safe amounts during pregnancy.

              Every patient is an individual and what you describe sounds like EXTREME MODERATION!  But if I told another patient to practice extreme moderation, who knows what that would mean to them.  I guess my response was an attempt to correct the actual concensus that exists in the medical community.

              You're right, we tend to focus on complete abstinence on "bad" things with patients, especially pregnant ones because there is so little research.  I try to lay out the evidence, advise, and meet each patient where they are.

              They are practicioners.

        Obama will get to PA and not concede it to Clinton.  He could close that gap and he doesn't have to let her get a big win.  I agree with Howard Fineman that if Obama went there, spent time there and got to know the people, he could close the gap.  Fineman even thinks there's a possibility he could win.  I think Obama should adopt the attitude he could win, and campaign his heart out there.

        Of course, you have the whole 'expectations' game that everyone seems to think they have to play, but Obama could play it as though he was going to give it all he had so he could prove he's competitive in these 'big' states that HRC likes to make us think are the only states we need to win.
