Welcome to Top Comments, that daily space where we recognize comments made in the past 24 hours that for whatever reason are just too good to let fall by the wayside.
If you find a notable comment during the day click the date/time stamp to get a direct link, copy it then send to topcomments at gmail dot com by 9:30PM Eastern! Don't forget to include your screen name so we can credit you! Anyone can submit comments- if you didn't do so today, please give it a try tomorrow!
Mining for comments is patriotic! Even more so than slapping a magnet on your car! Don't worry- you can mine for comments when you are sleep-deprived! Please demonstrate that you are a patriotic Kossack and send those comments in!
Brillig, Brillig, Democrat not-a Whig, how does your garden grow?
(before you knock my poetry, consider: do you have any idea how hard it is to rhyme my name???! :-))
It's finally Spring, even if it doesn't always feel like it here in <sunny</del> cold windy beautiful rainy arctic delightfully changeable New England. As I look at my backyard, I see grape vines that need pruning before the buds do their thing, raspberries and blackberries awaiting the weed-out of 2nd year canes, and our nectarine tree that finally, finally might be mature enough to allow to bear a fruit. Note the singular, sigh. Fruit trees are not for the patient. Somewhere underground are rhubarb and asparagus, and the mint and hops too.
That's what comes up (hopefully) every year. What it's finally time for is thinking about the veggies and herbs we plant anew each spring. We don't have the largest garden around, but it serves our needs. We usually plant 6-8 tomato plants, almost all plum varieties of one sort or another so we can freeze them and have homemade sauce in winter (yum!!), and a grape/cherry variety for nibbling. We plant a lot of basil- both thai, purple (makes a gorgeously pink basil vinegar!) and regular. We put in two or three hot pepper plants, whatever our garden store has that has the shortest time requirements, cause... well, New England is not the Southwest :-). The local squirrels seem to have learned NOT to eat them, unlike the bell peppers we used to plant.
Then there's the yearly sage and oregano, plus the rosemary that we transplant outside each spring then dig up each fall. That works for a few years, then it gets too big and we have to start over again. The current plant seems to have survived our care inside, so we'll cross our fingers and hope for the best outside.
We don't go for a huge assortment, don't plant cukes and zucchini (well, we did last year... omg, did we have zucchini!), occasionally throw in a lettuce or four, that's about it. We go for the stuff that the farmer's market doesn't satisfy us with, biggest bang for our scarce gardening buck.
What's in your wallet garden? If life just doesn't give you room for a garden, what would you plant if you had one? Any suggestions for the best varieties of tomatoes or hot peppers to plant?
And now, on to Top Comments! Anyway, here's what the inbox holds:
From orangeclouds115:
this comment from Cream Puff made me laugh. Can anyone answer the question?
From asimbagirl:
Note: Not really from asimbagirl, she got it in her email from someone who wanted it to go to Top Comments but who didn't leave a username. I don't want to use their real name, so... here it is, with thanks to asimbagirl for passing it along! Mystery user nominated this comment...
From sardonyx:
In DWG's diary Massive Antarctic Ice Shelf Collapses, CJnyc points out that we've lost control over the effects of climate change.
The Termite writes that we need to focus more on governing rightly in Crashing Vor's diary Stop It Right Now. Okay, how?
From cskendrick:
Not only does this fine quote from Orangeclouds 115 speak to NAFTA issues, but currently OC has a most excellent tagline. :)
Homogenius laments the loss of Tower Records. And wouldn't ya know it? a former employee posts a response!
BeninSC on a IGTNT diary.
And a few from me:
In Brandon Friedman's diary Iraq: What We've Learned this Week, madgranny sums up the Catch-22 that is the Surge.
In Kos' story The GOP's continued money woes, karateexplosions links the Democratic party and a favorite childhood plaything.
In nyceve's powerful diary Thank you Daily Kos! Another huge victory for the netroots and citizen activism!, mcmom succintly sums up what we ought to be doing here. (now go read the diary!)
