Mojo Friday: Special Thursday Support the Troops Edition

Thu Mar 27, 2008 at 07:34:44 AM PDT

It's all those MF'rs fault!  Yeah, those Mojo Friday'rs!  They've been so generous and so supportive of my troop care package efforts that now I need to ask for help.  Really.

Thanks to the incredible generousity and support of TexDem's Mojo Friday regulars, we now have reached 200+ sand scarves and 300 cool ties ready to be sent off to our men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Funds for 2 bolts of fabric for 300 more cool ties are on their way to me thanks to all of the folks who have purchased Mojo Friday gear.  But, there's more.

In addition, nearly $500 has been donated in Walgreen's giftcards and help with postage.  This translates into a lot of healthy snacks like beef jerky and trail mix, comfort essentials like sun screen, eye drops, nasal saline sprays, chap stick, etc., and a few stress relief goodies as well.  My favorite so far has been a really cool poker-game-in-a-brief-case set up with cards and chips.  And now I want something else - I want you to change this war 10 minutes at a time, one soldier at a time. Seriously.

PhotobucketAs most of you know, one of our own, kossack Soldier Boy, is currently serving in Iraq.  In my correspondence with him, he says that "mail is gold over here" - with your help, I want to rain some serious gold down on as many soldiers as possible in this next group of care packages.

I'm asking each of you, MF regulars or not, to write a "Dear Soldier" letter and e-mail it to me.  My addy is in my profile.  I will print out each e-mail and put it in an individual envelope with a cool tie and a sand scarf.  I'll be mailing them all together in a larger box with snacks and other goodies, but they will be given to individual soldiers who I know will appreciate hearing from you.

Write as much or as little as you'd care to.  Stay away from political statements, we don't know anything about the man or woman who'll be on the receiving end. From kossack wishingwell, her nephew put it this way:

We know that people can support the troops without supporting the war. What you hear to the contrary is usually some trumped up bullshit by the brass. The regular troops understand this. The troops do need a laugh and to relax so kind notes as well as humor, jokes are always welcome along with the packages

If you'd like to send me a few pics with your letter, please feel free to do so.  I can load them up to my Walgreen's account and print them out for next to nothing.  Tell your soldier what's in the picture - your pets, your kids, the snow outside, your town, a local parade, you get the idea.  Anything to give your soldier a touch of home is a good idea.  To keep this manageable I'm setting next Friday, 04.04.08, as the cut-off for this round of care packages.  If you have any questions, or suggestions, please fee free to e-mail me.

I wish I could tell you how grateful I am for each and every one of you.  Your kindness and support, to say nothing of your genorousity, never ceases to blow me away.  Then again, you are living proof of what it means to be a Democrat, to really support the troops, and to hold real family values.

Peace.
