(PLS UnREC) Morning "I VOTED" Open Thread - OH, TX, VT, and RI

Good morning everyone.  This is an election day tradition for me now, I've been creating open threads every day that there is a primary, so that we can hear from Kossacks in each individual state about their voting experiences.

So, if you voted in OH, TX, VT, or RI today, please post your experiences this morning.  Where did you vote?  How were the lines?  Any signage?  Unique experiences?   Weather?

And, I also do this every time: please recommend this diary.  It's not about me getting on the rec'd list, it's about giving as many people on DKos a chance to read about others' voting experiences.  If they're anything like me, they love hearing about Democracy.   So please, vote, recommend, and let us know how it went for you.  The floor is yours:

UPDATE: Just want to say, the stories are great, please keep them coming.  As an Obama supporter, these last couple days have been rough, but no matter the outcome, I suddenly feel much better seeing your stories of electoral involvement.

    Very quiet, but the polls just barely opened. The national media keep saying Vermont opened at 6:00 AM, but only the farmers are awake then, and their polls open much later. The larger towns in Vermont - South Burlington, Essex, etc. - opened at 7:00, with the smaller towns later in the day, as late as 10:00 AM in Alburg and towns like that.

      Polls opened at 9:00 am. I got there at 8:45 and was 4th in line, by the time I left there was a line of 35 people, which is pretty impressive for a town with fewer than 3,000 residents. Best news: everyone was asking for Democratic ballots, unusual for a town which is one of the last republican strongholds in the state. I was really moved by the numbers of blue collar men asking for Democratic ballots, most of them for the first time in their lives. For months I've been hearing from these guys about how they were torn between Obama and Huckabee or McCain; it was nice to see how they finally chose.

          We've got people who vote GOP out of habit, but they're NOT wingnuts. My town was hit very hard by a National Guard call-up in 2004, with two young fathers not coming back. These people hate the war with a passion and feel betrayed by anyone who voted for it. There is no way in hell these guys voted for Hillary-I will personally vouch for it.

        •  Vermont Politics Are Not Like That

          Politics here are far more light-hearted. The last, and only that I can think of, games in elections were when Fred Tuttle overwhelmingly won in the Republican primary a few years back over Jack McMillions (not his real name, but what he became known by), who thought he could move to Vermont, run on his millions, get the nomination, and then challenge Pat Leahy.

          Tuttle won despite spending no money and despite, during the primary, endorsing Leahy. They then campaigned together on a civic platform all about getting people to vote - oh, and to vote for Leahy because Fred had no interest in leaving his farm for Washington.

          Other that that, we don't play games with our elections. :-)

            That was the true silly season. Debate questions ranged from "How do you pronounce 'Calais' and 'Barre'?" to "How many teats does a cow have?" McMillions (what was his real name?) blew the primary on the former, and Pat, asked the latter, promised to defer to Fred should that question ever come before him in the Senate.

              Leahey said it was the most unusual campaign he'd ever been in.  In the General Election campaign Pat would pick up Fred and they'd go to town meetings and answer questions.  It was low cost and they met just about everybody with out any negative campaigning.  "Sure was different," said Leahey.  Leahey went to Fred's funeral.

          Vermonters do not vote by what Rush says - even on the right.

          And we do not have what the rest of the country calls the "right." Conservatives in Vermont are traditional, old school Republicans. I think the last neocon in Vermont was Professor Kaufmann up at UVM, and he got run out of state eventually, and he's teaching at Pepperdine now.

          (Which is a shame, by the way - I had him, and he was a great professor...)

    My husband and I voted early in Texas for Obama, but my 19 year old son is planning to vote for Ron Paul.

    Actually, he has been planning to vote for Ron Paul for several months, but now he is discouraged. He was one of those who truly believed that Paul could win, and believes that the election was rigged and that the media is corrupt and conspiring to drive Paul out of the race. He has not voted yet, and I am trying to get him to cast his ballot for Obama because he hates the Clintons for Nafta and the IWR vote. I will try again to suggest he vote in a race that matters rather than a protest vote in the R race.

            the delegate math in Texas stinks for Clinton.

            I voted early on the first day of voting, and I get to go back and sign in for Obama again tonight at my precinct convention.

            Results could take a while, since the conventions can't start until the regular voting is finished, and it may take a while to sign everyone in, elect delegates, and phone in the results to the central office. I think there are more than 8000 precincts in Texas, and each one has to go through this process individually.

            The only bad thing is that we'll be stuck in the convention, and we won't be able to hear what's happening elsewhere until we get out

              Convention!!! My precinct captain called me yesterday to make sure I was coming tonight, and I said of course! She said that they are trying to find enough people to commit to go as delegates to the county convention, and we get to send 90 people to the county convention! I am so excited.

                      I moved to Missouri in 2006.  Prior to living in St. Louis, I lived in Illinois, where I was able to vote for Obama in the U.S. Senate race.  I'm really excited for the opportunity to be a delegate -- I've been an Obama fan for a while!

                        I came to Missouri because I get a tenure-track job offer here that was better than any other.  '

                        My parents and sister still live in Peoria and supported Obama in the primary.

                    I was in the MO caucuses (in St. Louis) when we helped get McGovern nominated -- it was my first presidential election -- in fact, first election! 18 year olds didn't have the vote yet -- had to be 21.
                    It was pretty interesting because the people running the caucus were old-style Dems who really were taken aback by all the 20-somethings who arrived to vote for McGovern.  But, in their defense, they were scrupulously fair.

                      of growing up in St. Louis and working my first polling place.  It was for a guy running for state rep in South St. Louis...near Soulard.  The deal was, he was a black guy running against someone who had been a rep for like 75 years (no joke, he was like 96 and almost entirely senile) and our candidate had promised to endorse McCarthy should he win.

                      All day, we were threatened by folks driving around in black town cars without license plates.  There was no violence but at one point, a bunch of folks came over from the Pruitt Igo projects to stand guard over us.  Three of my buddies, at another polling place, were similarly threatened.  After the polls closed, however, a "judge" came up and said "no hard feelings...here, it's hot, here's some Cokes...on us."  Turns out the Cokes had been laced with formaldehyde and my friends each ended up in the hospital.

                      Ahhh...American politics.  And this was the Dem party.

                        St. Louis was the first place I encountered open racism and antisemitism.  I grew up in the D.C. area with a real mixture of friends and was heavily involved in the Civil Rights movement.  St. Louis was quite a shock.
                        But it had its good points.  Much more relaxed and less workaholic than the D.C. area.  And I had good friends among the "low-class" Italians (Sicilians) who did not live on The Hill.
                        Do you know Talayna's, and if so, is it still there?

                          I used to go to Talayan's all the time.  I've never had a better pizza since...and I've been all over Massachusetts and NYC.  Ou sont les pizzas d'antan?  Talayanas was right next to one of the greatest book stores EVER...Blocks Books rivalled only by Burgdorf's Books in the Central West End...if I have my geography intact.

                          I grew up in St. Louis and was bored silly.  I thought it incredibly backwards and had my eye on either of the coasts. Couldn't wait to get out.  Still, it was a quiet and gentile place, much of the time.  I've been on the east coast since 1975 and there are times I really long for the mid west ethos.

                            so we were there about the same time.  The brother of one of my best friends here owned Left Bank Books, and my ex-husband worked there.
                            Toasted ravioli?  Haven't had it except once since leaving St. Louis (local Cafe America does regional foods and one time they had toasted ravioli on the menu).

                              Another great book store...But it was a relative late comer, I think....After Block's went out of business.  I could measure my life by the bookstores I have frequented or worked in.  Wow...thanks for bringing up these memories!! I was actually pretty well gone by 1970 as I went to college in St. Paul, MN and changed my base of operations to up there.  Still returned to see the folks on occasion.  Once I moved to Boston, however, it became quite infrequent.

              •  My (later) morning poll vignette:

                I'm the one with the early post (pre-coffee) above.  I drove car-pool with my son and another boy, and went by the local polling place (elementary school) to place my spare Obama sign just beyond the limit as prescribed by Texas election law.

                WHOA!  THERE, in my conservative, 60 R- 40 D % precinct, the one where I have now lived for ten years, was an 8-foot table, staffed by a volunteer, offering donuts and coffe, and encouraging people to return to the polls this evening for the precint convention!  There was a 6' X 8' "Texas for Obama" sign on the lawn, and my humble sign was one more among a dozen along the sidewalk in both directions.  Nary a Hillary sign to be seen...  Other local office candidates (Lupe Valdez for Dallas County Sheriff, etc.) were out theree.

                Understand, in the 28+ - year period over which I have lived in Dallas and Dallas County, I have NEVER SEEN this kind of presence by the Democrats, ANY Democrats!!! This is huge!  The DNC, the DCCC and DSCC have NEVER given a hoot about Texas, except to treat us as an ATM.  There were simply no Kerry/Edwards, nor Gore bumper stickers or signs to be had the last two cycles.  This is not just a sea change, this is a tide of change, from where I sit.  Or is a sea change bigger than a tide?  Sorry, I mix my navigational metaphors.

                I will be at the precinct convention, herding the Obama and Clinton cats (and any undecided or die-hard Edwards, Kucinich, or other supporters) throught the process.  Though asn Obama supporter, I intend to wear my dallas County Democrats t-shirt, to emphasize that we have a general election to win in November.  I will take the floor for a moment as the precinct chair to emphasize this to all present.

                I can't wait for November 4:  eight months to go to VICTORY!

                  my mom is a hillary demographic, working class woman over 50 who is a democrat, but does not follow these things all that closely. she was on the fence about who to vote for, liked both hillary and barack. her big issue (for some wierd reason, since she is retired) is immigration. anyway, she ended up voting for barack, but not, i would say, with wild passion as some here.

                  BUT, what was more at issue for her is that in wichita falls, texas which is VERY, VERY red, (they LOVED Bush there.)full of evangelicals, etc. near oklahoma,... she said that 10,000 people in her county had early voted. (there are only about 100,000 people in the county.) she said that the news there said that the "majority" were dem votes by a large margin. she was excited and said "something is stirring for democrats" in that region. note, she was NOT attributing this to obama, but rather anti-bush, anti-republican sentiment.

              I was in the middle of negotiating with a roomful of unviable Richardson supporters on caucus night in Iowa when my cell phone rang.  My mom was calling from Illinois to tell me they were calling it for Obama.

              To tell the truth, I was dissapointed about the cell phone effect.  It was nice when the whole race was boiled down to just what was happening in that school building.  I didn't like the intrusion even though the news was very good.  It could have waited until we were done winning every delegate we could.

          The kitchen sink strategy is actually working.  The good news is that I don't think it's sustainable over the next 6 weeks.

          Last night on Anderson 360, it was non-stop Obama-bashing.  Which, if it were substantive, would be fine.  But they were spending 75% of their time on the 'rumor' portion of the story, quickly rush past the 'factual' portion in as few words as possible, and then spend the reamining time discussing how much the story was going to hurt Obama.

          Clinton News Network, indeed.

              was in the Hillary camp ALL DAY yesterday.  It was pretty bad.  My husband came home for lunch and noticed it right away.  I thought maybe it was just me feeling that way until he started laughing and pointing it out.  I felt like it then proceeded to go on for the rest of the afternoon and into the evening.

              They are going to work as hard as they can to try and prop up this tired old horserace meme until it drops dead.  More viewers = more ad revenue.  If somehow Hillary gains the lead, than they'll start bagging on her and try to get Obama back in the lead, if they can keep it going until the Convention, or GASP past the convention, it would be their wettest wildest dreams come true.  Matthews probably wouldn't be able to stand for a week.
