I used to love this site.

It was the first thing I'd read when I came to work each day.
Daily Kos was a refuge for me.  It was freedom from the conservative or apathetic co-workers, and more than that it was an exciting place- where bright, informed people were sharing ideas, dialog and dreams.

But this site has changed.

For me, November 2006 was a high point at Daily Kos.  The site was alive and well; Democrats had finally appeared to turn around electoral thumping.
There was excitement and a sense of positivity in this community.

Then the US Attorney Scandal gave re-energized progressives a chance to focus on Bush Administration Malfeasance.

I, and some of you folks still sticking around here today, joined in on the focus as blogger journalists and even traditional print media began to pay attention to the unraveling Justice Department.

By and large, the community was united in a quest to fight a common enemy.  To me it seemed the anger and outrage and energy was focused outward.  Moreover, the outrage was appropriate and justified.  It just seemed reasonable and righteous to fight against an administration that took us to war based upon lies, wiretapped us without warrant or legal justification, and tortured people in our name.

But by November 2007, things changed.  The appetite for analytical diaries and "Bush Outrage" had been replaced.  We entered a sinusoidal cycle of candidate diaries.  At first, these were postive testimonials promoting one candidate or another.  But then the anger and outrage and energy, that used to be so prominently and productively focused outward, was turned inward, against each other.

I have seen so many good writers stop writing or announce their departure owing to the degeneration of discourse.  And it seems to me that the Golem that the collective spirit on this site has become has no real interest or ability to stop the hatred.

I believe that this crisis period will end when a candidate is named; But I regret that this site has changed so much in a way I think many will agree is negative.  And I regret that so many bright, passionate, and dedicated Democrats will have been damaged.

I miss you guys, but I can't stand it in here right now.
I look forward to seeing you on the other side of the hill, where I hope we will be able to drink a toast to our Democratic President.

        But, I read about it in Radiowalla's GBCW. The site quite frankly sucks now. I signed up for another last night and probably will spend more time there than here.

        I'm at a loss as to why kos has let this disintegrate to the point that it is. I think he's looking at numbers alone, wow, 150k +!, but what about the people leaving?

        Daily I see comments that would have got my ass TRd just months ago, now they are rec'd up with wild enthusiasm.

        As for flamewar avoidance, yesterday when I logged in there was not one diary that was worth the reading, none. A couple popped up as I wandered in and out, but they scrolled rapidly downward.

        I never thought I'd say this, but dkos is boring.

          We've lost some truly great writers, but there are some other truly great ones who are sticking around, either posting diligently (like gmoke, and getting hardly any readers) or on temporary lurk mode until the primary war is over.  

          Plus the new flood of attention that the blogs will get once the full election is underway will bring in a new crop of users and (hopefully) a few new gems among them.  The vitriol right now is disappointing, but I'm clutching at the straws worth holding on to.

    "...when a candidate is named."

    The problem here is one that no one expected -- that we'll have to go all the way to the Convention in order to name a nominee.

    WE ALL THOUGHT it would be taken care of by the end of February, too.

    I'm an Edwards (and Dodd) supporter.  Look at how that turned out.

    But notice how quickly a non-candidate diary makes it to the rec list.  People are ACHING for content.  Please help provide more of that.

    And, I propose that all candidate diaries start with "CD" so we know and can avoid them.  But don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

        Maybe it's because I know supporters of that candidate, respect them, and realize that they make up the other half of the Dem party. Someday we will have to heal and being called names kinda sticks with you.

        I especially hate being told that I'm too old to understand the greatness and wonder that is surrounding X. That I shouldn't worry about health care or personal issues, I'm in the way. They don't even look at my sig line, they just flame away if I question anything.

        I know I'm bitching, but I really hate seeing this turn into nothing but a fan boy, (fan girl) site with no scepticism whatsoever.

        the mob is railing against ~ When there is no 'reason' applied then there is no pure discourse occuring ~which does not foster change ~ at least not in a positive way.  When all are viewing everything through their own 'prism of bias' without applying 'reason' ~that is when 'evil attributes' are created out of whole cloth ~ When people on this site can believe that Hillary actually endorsed McCain ~ that she thinks he would be a better president~ when that is not at all what she said or did ~ but it immediately becomes the 'reality' and the mob runs with it...and adds it to the misconceptions that were created yesterday, last week, six months ago,etc., until there is a whole list of "nothings" fueling the passion.  How is that beneficial to our party or our country?

  I haven't been here in a loooooooooooooong time - this election cycle brought me back here a few days ago.

  I don't see things as ugly as many here seem to.  What I see is a fire and passion on both sides of the Clinton/Obama issue that shows the kind of passion ans fire that the party has lacked for a while.  

  I enjoy the energy of this.  Granted, there is shrill and caustic commentary on both sides, but I, for one, am glad to see the passion re-ignited on our side.

    I was here long before Kos was "outed" from Anonymous-ville - when he was still the sole poster on the site.

    What you claim is a complete myth: 2003-04 was absolutely nothing like this.

    The substance here in 2004 was very considerable. It was very policies-based. There was no equivalent of the dozens of screaming diaries daily. The anonymous venom was mild at most. And although some alumni left to set up companion blogs (I was one, with Theoria) they remained friendly to Kos.

    This site is diminishing itself enormously as an effective weapon for progressives.

   I am not a diarist but rather an avid reader of diaries , and I have really enjoyed your work.
   I can imagine the frustration of  having good work drowned out by bullshit.
  The anger level is amazing right now.
   I know that some people simply enjoy acting out, and I think some people are discovering for the first time that politics is a dirty business.
   It will be a relief to have a candidate and be able to get down to the real task at hand ; beating the crap out the R's , up and down the ticket.

  Progressives are choosing our champion. People have strong feelings and different values and perceptions. Some can express their ideas in civil discourse some can't.

  Just because it unpleasent doesn't mean it is not necessary.

  If a dialog about the appropriate stance on issues and acceptable campaign methods can not happen here then it can’t happen anywhere. So it’s worth trying.

  I realize Kosacks have speculated upon the the "WTF happened to this site?" question ad nauseam, but to chip in a few centavos:

  • High stakes — It's only the future of our society at issue; no biggie.
  • Candidate hacks — There are plenty of these, in two flavors:  primary-focused writers who wanted only to win from the get-go regardless of the cost to respect and credibility in the dKos community, and regular writers who have gone the same way once they chose a candidate.  Trends include inflammatory diary titles, uncritical thnking, black-and-white one-sided argments, and outright shilling. They are oversensitive to the smallest perceived slight and adulatory of any praise of their candidate.
  • Excessive anxiety over short term issues and scandals — Messy and unrepresentative though it is, this is the democratic process.  Let us let it play out.
  • Goading — There is plenty by the traditional press, possibly in addition to the occasional provacateur around here.  The willfully excessive coverage of the primary, to the detriment coverage of all the other crazy shit our government is doing, is goading in a way too.
  • Moderates and our own party leadership in the House and Senate working against us — The catastrophe of the PAA passage last August brought home to anyone who still held out hope that the House majority and Senate plurality do not represent us.  We could win in a massive landslide if we got some real accountability and restored power to the citizens, rather than to Washington.  But our elected party leadership would rather lose than win that way.

  I'm a long time lurker and recent member.  To this observer, the range of content here has always run the gamut from well worth my while, to a complete waste of time, to downright offensive (at least intellectually).  What else would one expect from a site that offers egalitarian access to a virtually unlimited community?

  When I read ad hominem arguments, mindless regurgitations of spin, and offensive speech, I generally try to make a mental note to ignore the poster in the future.  One of my pet peeves is having to wade through 80-entry threads that are arguments about whether a hide rating was warranted.  I generally read a discussion because I'm interested in the topic.

  My recommendation for this site is a private rating system, one that would allow each user to up/down-rate other users strictly for their own personal consumption.  I'm not nearly as worried about having my sensibilities offended as I am about finding ways to filter information that I'm likely to find useful out of the universe of available information.

  I don't understand why you have to read the garbage you are bring up.
  I still find enough diaries to read a week that are good & deserve a recommend to get over 100 a week.

  yes there is a lot of trash but I can tell by reading the first 2 paragraphs if it's something I should continue to read.
