As a person who has been frequently judged here for my appreciation of a certain author I will not name, I was thinking today about a less political topic: What books are you extremely embarrassed to have read?
I recently read a book with such a dearth of value (IMHO), yet such an amazing level of sales, that it made me wonder: "Who the heck is buying this book?" and (cheap political tie-in): "Are they the same people who voted for Shrub?"
The identity of this book is revealed below the flip . . .
The book I am most mortifed to have read is "The Notebook," which in my humble opinion is the most mindless tripe ever to make the New York Times Best Seller list. While the story could have a certain beauty if it was better written, in my view the literary merit of this tome falls into the category of "great fire starter!". On the bright side, reading it gave me hope that I may someday actually write something worth reading, because if that book was published, well . . .
Others in my "most embarrassing" list would include any number of self-help and pop psychology books, all of which underwent a recent purging from my shelves.
What about you? Air that dirty laundry, my friends!
