Why Local Elections Should Matter To You

Thu Apr 10, 2008 at 03:10:44 AM PDT

So much of our political focus, especially this year, is on the presidential candidates, that down ticket candidates seem to have a much more difficult time catching the attention of the media, the voters and especially contributors.

But it's those local elections that are the spawning grounds of our future leaders. City leaders become county leaders. County leaders become state leaders. State leaders go to congress and so on and so on.

Living in a state like Florida we get to see this truth play out on a regular basis, especially as a breeding ground for the most asinine right wing idiots that you can only make you scratch your head and wonder "who really votes for these people?"

And we see more and more the importance of cutting these people off early, before they have the chance to climb the food chain and assert their influence to an even wider audience.

Follow me below the fold for two specific examples from one of our worst "pools" down here - Hillsborough County (Tampa).

The posterchild for this theory is Rhonda Storms, former Hillsborough County Commissioner who gained notoriety a couple of years back when she convinced the county commission to ban any support of gay pride events after finding a gay pride display in one of the county libraries. Unfortunately she ran for the state Senate in 2006 and we were unable to prevent her election.

Her most stellar legislative example this session is her “Academic Freedom Act” that would

permit public schools teachers to present evidence in class that contradicts the theory of biological and chemical evolution.

You can read a link to a local article here.

Following in her legacy is another Hillsborough County Commissioner, Brian Blair. His claim to fame, prior to his election, was his pro wrestling career. The issue that has raised his ire recently is a "Day of Silence" that is an annual event organized in many high schools to commemorate gays and lesbians who have lost their lives because of anti-gay violence. While there are several links available, I'll post this one, only because of the sartorial splendor or Brian Blair's wrestling trunks.

This "Day of Silence" has pushed Commissioner Blair over the edge because, in his words

..is a nationwide push to promote the homosexual lifestyle in public schools.

Here is his "Citizen's Update form Brian Blair" of April 7, 2008:

Dear Friends,

I have always believed that all citizens are equal and should be treated accordingly. On the other hand, no group of citizens should be given government sanction and support to promote their social and sexual agenda upon the rest of us and especially, our children.  The attached email provides information about a "Day of Silence" for homosexuals in our schools.  Considering the fact that the same school system does not want to allow just one Minute of Silence in the classroom for God, this is preposterous.

I encourage every parent of children in the participating schools to voice their opposition to this proposal to the school administration, the School Board the newspapers and to family and friends.  Can you imagine asking for a "Day of Cheer for Heterosexuality?"  If no action is taken to change this policy, then perhaps it is time for another surgical strike from the majority; a "Day of Abstention" from school participation might be considered.

 Kindest Regards,

Brian Blair
Hillsborough County Commissioner
District 6 - Countywide

Commissioner Blair is running for re-election this year. His is a countywide seat and one has to wonder if this really is representative of all of Hillsborough County. In my mind, this is exactly the type of candidate we should try, at all costs, to work to defeat to keep him from following in the footsteps of his obvious mentor, Ronda Storms.

Fortunately, he is being challenged by a viable Democratic challenger, Kevin Beckner, who appears to have a very good chance of nipping Blair's political career in the bud.

I'd strongly suggest visiting Kevin's website and dropping a couple of dollars Kevin's way. Even if you don't live in Hillsborough County, even if you don't live in Florida, who knows where a candidate like Brian Blair could end up next?

If you won't do it for us in Florida, how about for the pooties?

last year, it is encouraging to see a new wave of people getting excited about and involved in the presidential election.  I think many of them will stick around for the locals next year.

Especially since I am running for town council again this year. These local elections (in upstate NY, anyways) are usually off-year events, but I'm running to fill an unexpired slot on the board that I am currently filling (long story).

As the only Dem member of our five member board, I am  working on local issues like energy audits for town buildings, inclusionary zoning/affordable housing, and other initiatives. Things that might not get done without a progressive on the board.

The down-ticket races are always important, and that doesn't just mean national-level offices like comgressional/senatorial races.

Thanks for bringing this subject up.

Speculating yesterday about Ed Rendell, and specifically why the old politicos don't understand Obama...

Obama's campaign structure will increase the number of Democrats at every level. Even in states we don't have a chance of winning at the Presidential level will have more grass roots activism--the beginning of 100 years of Progressivism.

I used an analogy. You set up your hedge trimmer at the back border of the lawn, and suddenly realize your power has been cut off at the plug. That's what might just happen to the "Washington-centered" old school pols as they ignore the grass roots.

To realize is that Obama is not as popular in some states as in others. To assume that his prescense on the ticket guarantees success downticket in places like KY, TN, OH, and OK is not really very smart. We MUST support our Congressional and Senate candidates individually there. Hey, you can start here!!!:

did Steroids!  Isn't that against the law or something?

Kevin Beckner is a great candidate and I've enjoyed my time volunteering for his campaign.

He is a candidate that will represent all Hillsborough County rather than just the people he surrounds himself with, Brian Blair's biggest  accomplishment is getting a pond in his neighborhood, his backyard actually, cleaned with my tax dollars.

and yes, lots of Obama supporters are volunteering for Kevin's campaign - it's all about the CHANGE WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR - it's us!  We're the change!

As someone desperately crying in the dark for a Congressional candidate on this site, I love this diary. Sorry I missed it before.

Assuming Obama or anyone else is going to deliver Congressional races for us, without donating to and working for the individual candidates is lunacy.

Please don't ignore our great candidates at all levels!!

    Best wishes, great diary!!!

for this diary.  Just another example of the cliche "all politics is local."  I listened to a speech by Fmr. Congressman Jim Leach (D-IA) this past summer and I heard that phrase from him for the first time.  Since then and especially now, I find that statement holds true.

is running for California State Senate because no Democrat was going to run.  Democracy doesn't work if there is no choice other than "R".

Thank you for this, local is important and it's also the easiest way people can have an impact on their local communities, it's a lot easier to be close and involved than with a national campaign.

is one of the crucial components of democracy.

Unfortunately the sponsor driven local media with the proclivity to report sensation hinders democracy.  Before every election the majority of the public is unaware of most of the candidates because the local media fails to regularly report on civic matters.  Exceptions are scandals or if their "investigative reporters" uncovered, you guessed it, a scandal.

Local TV networks have abused our right to know by feeding us junk news.  We are more likely to see fires, explosions, murders, accidents, sensational car chases and similar dramatic events comprising local news.

On the other hand, not enough members of the public demand more civic oriented news.

A fundamental shift is required in the media viewers before the public is adequately informed.

...as far as local elections are concerned. Many of the most pressing local issues, at least where I live, don't split along party lines.

Most political battles in my town center on questions of development and corporate welfare directed at the Chamber of Commerce.

Business and development interests are represented in both parties, as are the opposing sustainable development views.  Winning progressive coalitions are built across party lines. The fact that our local elections are non-partisan (though everyone is, of course, aware of the candidates' party affiliations) makes the creation of both these coalitions easier.

This nicely summarizes what's wrong with American political life today. (Source)
