In Memoriam: Abe Osheroff

When I read about this amazing guy's life in today's Times, I was reminded why it's so important to be true to what we stand for, no matter how unpopular it may be, no matter what the polls say, no matter how bleak these days may look. Carry on, Lefties, Liberals and Progressives All, wherever you are, no matter how young or how old.  If not now, when? Dear Old Abe...he never stopped raging against the empire and none of us ever should.

  in 1956.  I guess the rape of Hungary was the last straw.

    Good people like Camus didn't stick  around the Communist Party very long, and issues like Hungary were very much the last straw. It was left to small, limited men like Sartre to continue to parrot the party line for years to come.

  He looked like a pretty vigorous guy at age 82 in the photo, sure he didn't lose much in the last few years.

  Men (and women) who left the relative comfort of America to stand against Fascism when most of America -- including most definitely the American government -- wanted no part of the fight against Fascism. And so, a few years later, America had to enter  the fight and pay a much higher price in blood and treasure than it would have if it had only had the  courage to do what the Lincoln Brigade tried to do, and stop Fascism before it got its bloody claws into Europe.
