Hillary Clinton: I'm More American Than He Is

The kitchen sink must be just about empty, because now Hillary Clinton is using an argument that would make Karl Rove blush: she's making the case that she's more authentically American than Barack Obama.

I've edited together the essence of her message. Even if you've seen her statement before, watch this clip -- it's short, and I promise it'll be worth your while:

There was no subtlety to her point: in her four minute long attack on Obama, Hillary Clinton used America (or one of its forms) 18 separate times. Compare that to primary night in New Hampshire, when in a twelve minute victory speech she used it just ten times.

Obviously, there's nothing wrong with using the word America in a political speech. But there is something wrong with using it as a political weapon.  And that's exactly what Hillary Clinton was doing today.

I was taken aback by the demeaning remarks Sen. Obama made about people in small town America. Sen. Obama's remarks are elitist, and they are out of touch. They are not reflective of the values and beliefs of Americans. Certainly not the Americans that I know — not the Americans I grew up with, not the Americans I lived with in Arkansas or represent in New York.

Hillary Clinton's meaning is clear: I'm more American than Barack Obama. In case there's any doubt, consider this statement in light of the fact that Barack Obama's father was a Kenyan citizen (the elder Obama was in the United States on a student visa):

When my dad grew up it was in a working class family

And this:

I grew up in a churchgoing family

Doesn't it remind you of her "as far as I know moment?"

Is there anything she holds sacred?

About six weeks ago, Hillary Clinton accused Barack Obama of employing the worst quality of politics, reminiscent of Karl Rove. "Shame on you," she said.

No, Hillary. Shame on you.

          it was a grade A operation.

          i've said this in the past: my personal experience with the NV caucuses was absolutely excellent, and the Hillary people actually helped Edwards (who I supported) get a delegate in my precinct.

          I think most of the attacks here in NV on the Clinton folks weren't justified.

          It just shows you that I and most Obama supporters don't have a beef with 99% of Hillary supporters (save the extreme ones you can guess who).

          We do have a problem with HRC's campaign, but her supporters are almost all good (if a bit misguided! ;))

          that said, i know we're going to have to reunify once the primary is over, and obama supporters are going to have  to be very gracious in the almost certain event that he wins the nomination.

          but until then, as long as she wants to run this kind of campaign, you gotta' return fire.

                The correct spelling is Gandhi, not "Ghandi."  

                That is a fact, not an opinion, so it doesn't make any difference how you feel about it. Your feelings don't even enter into it. And this is not really such a small thing: it's someone's name. If to you "he's just Ghandi," that means you don't give a shit about the truth. Or, perhaps, between Obama and "Osama."

                And if someone, no matter how annoying, corrects you on a simple point of fact and you call them the "name police," that's just a lame attempt to distract yourself from the fact that your spelling is wrong. Period.

              the pro-clinton people way oversold the partial vindication, though.

              it's still unclear whether she actually went to another hospital. ap says she did, but has the hospital on record denying that.

              her family told the wapo that she didn't go, btu that reason she didn't go was because in 2005 she had a judgment and that she knew she'd need to pay $100 to go and she didn't have $100.

              regardless, it seems nearly 100% certain that the two biggest factors in her death were access to a good hopsital, (there wasn't one close to her) and more importantly access to a trauma center.

              if hillary wanted to make the evils of insurers a big deal, sarkisyans would have been the way to go, but then again, she attacked edwards on that.

      Just like the right-wing hit pieces, you have to judge each one individually and decide whether or not you agree or disagree. You have to ask yourself, is his attack fair? I say it is, you might not. You have to ask yourself, is he using credible sources? I say, those are Hillary's own words, which I interpreted similarly. You might interpret them differently.

      To make a blanket statement that we should not engage in the same type of hit pieces as the right wing propagandists is to simplify a real problem that we have with unreliable media and partisan propaganda in this country. What's more important, I think, is to learn to critically evaluate each piece of information we receive, no matter the source.
