The tone of the hearing is already a contentious one. Chairman Specter refuses to swear Gonzales in. The Democrats demanded a roll call vote on the chair's decision, and the Republicans had the votes to uphold his decision. But Gonzales just testified he has no objection to be sworn in. Specter has also prohibited the video of the President's 2004 statement, along with video of Gonzales's testimony. He says the transcripts are enough.
Leahy's opening statement was very strong. He stated in no equivocal terms that the President broke the law. In quite simple terms, he stated that FISA is the exclusive means, the President knew that, he ignored that, and violation of FISA is a federal crime.
Gonzales is giving his opening statement now. Nothing new, it's the same tired arguments that have already been debunked.
