Bill Clinton slams younger voters, says they're being fooled

Tue Apr 15, 2008 at 03:35:42 PM PDT

Bill Clinton has managed to step in it again.  Last week he disparaged older folks by saying that they start to get forgetful after they turn 60.  Today he basically said that younger voters are dumb and are being "fooled" by Obama, according to the headline of a Boston Globe report.  Even more bizarre, even though he was supposed to be making the case for his wife to be president, he ended spending a lot of time talking about HIS presidency.

The Globe reports that old Bubba claimed today in Pennsylvania - at a high school no less - that "older voters gravitate to Hillary Clinton because they're too wise to be fooled by Barack Obama's rhetoric":

"I think there is a big reason there's an age difference in a lot of these polls," he said. "Because once you've reached a certain age, you won't sit there and listen to somebody tell you there's really no difference between what happened in the Bush years and the Clinton years; that there's not much difference in how small-town Pennsylvania fared when I was president, and in this decade."

So, if older voters won't let themselves get fooled by Obama, does that mean younger voters are dumber and thus are being "fooled" by Obama?  That seems to be what Bill is saying.

In a nice touch, the Globe notes the irony of Bill sticking up for older voters a week after he dissed them:

Last week, however, Clinton seemed to suggest that older voters might be more absent-minded than wise. Defending Hillary Clinton's faulty recollection of landing under sniper fire during a 1996 humanitarian visit to Bosnia, the former president said of her critics, "When they're 60, they'll forget something when they're tired at 11 o'clock at night, too."

The article also pointed out the irony of Bill spending a lot of time defending his past record in the White House while also saying this election isn't about "history":

At various points in his nearly hour-long appearance at Quakertown Community High School, Clinton cautioned the hundreds gathered to hear him against voting on history. (His defense of his White House record notwithstanding, of course.) Despite press coverage about how historic a campaign this is, Clinton said, "the history doesn't amount to a hill of beans. All that matters is the future. Who will make the best future for you?"

You're right about that Bill.  You and Hillary are about the past.  Obama is about the future.
