    I really hope this out of touch fool saves himself from the embarrassment that will come if he decides to run for Senate.  I don't like the guy, but I don't really dislike him either.  Him saying Barack can't talk to people in a diner is just projection.  He is awkward in every situation.  Watching Tweety tonight on Maher and the other night on Colbert was painful.

    It's long, but interesting.  I actually feel a little sorry for Chris.

    Shoutout to Sally in SF -- only one of the finest activists in the nation.. and a great pal during the Dean Campaign, including that very first Bloggers Breakfast in Des Moines ... Half a block away from DEAN HEADQUARTERS when you headed left out the front door was a dumb looking old car dealership -- home of John Kerry Headquarters.  Half a blovk in the other direction (past the parking lot with the big banner flying overhead "I see Dean People") was Starbucks where political strategy went down. And across from the Starbucks a block away, past two chain link fences, was the Edwards headquarters.

    Sally had firsthand interaction with that mega-asshole Chris Matthews at the swanky hotel... It was upon her return from the Val-Aire Ballroom the night of jan 21, 2004, after the Iowa Caucuses, where the 3000 Dean Supporters filled the hall with such noise Dean had to shout over them to be heard as he told them that a year before he'd never have expected to have come in third... and some other stuff he then said...

    Sally heard Matthews gossiping about "did you see Dean implode tonight?" ... Not knowing what he was talking about, and wanting to ask him "what the hell ARE you talking about?", she went up to him. And that was the first inkling any of us had that there was about to be major trouble:  That a meme was about to be born and unleashed into mediaspace.

    And it succeeded in taking out Dean.

    Hah! The Conglomerate Media has lost its potency, as they have now failed to take out Obama week after week after week, drummed up "scandal" after manufactured distractions. It was up to Boy George Steph and the Gibster to do the final damage.

    But the tall skinny guy brushed off their bullshit, and carried on. Then smoked on the Colbert Report -- and put them all ON NOTICE!

    Hah hah!  the Hillary/ConglomerateMedia Complex is being defeated, one Bill-Clinton ill-conceived strategy at a time... It won't be long now.

    Anyway, that's my Sally story. Ask her about Matthews that night...

        though soemtimes seems obvious - it just needs to be parsed out.  His delivery is so quick it often sounds circular when it is really self-referential in a poetic way.  Just my opinion though.

    that was a great, eye-opening clip.  If only we stuff like that in the corporate media...as opposed to Tweety and the rest painting "working class whites" as some monolithic group that thinks and votes on the most basic, trivial level.  That clip, along with Markos's shot at Tweety and the media  were the highlight of the show for me.  

    I'm not smart enough to understand what Cornell West was talking about.  I still like the guy though.  Just would have liked more Markos on politics then Maher and West on religion.

    •  West's problem, aside from his distracting hand

      motions, is his use of code words and catch phrases that he has developed in his writings and teachings that are very loaded, and that he tosses out rapid fire as if assuming everybody has taken his classes.

      He made some very good points though, as others here have noted.

      He also hunches over awkwardly.  Kos has a much better presence on stage, in that respect.

      Maher is an out and out laugh riot.  Man is he quick.

  Cornell West is brilliant, but his gestures are distracting.  I would have loved to hear that beautiful woman talk some more.  She had some insights that weren't given enough weight.

  If I was on one of those shows, I wouldn't be able to make a single coherent comment, just sayin.

  •  I saw him realize that his early comments were...

    going over people's heads, perhaps annoying them and making him sound elitist. Ironically, his opening comments were about elitism.

    Then he toned down his lofty professorial tone (which sounds pretentious to some untrained, and even some trained, ears) and gave voice to some pretty amazing, informative and eloquent insights. I think the lesson here for him is that when he goes off on his tangents, he loses half of a mainstream audience, not because we're stupid, but because he's talking in such  a rapid-fire succession about pretty big ideas. And that can be annoying.

    But yeah, the Ayaan Hirsi Ali was great. I was confused by what she said about self-starvation. Also, I don't know if I agree with her statement that we are seeing the beginning of the end of 'multiculturalism', but I'm not sure that's what she meant. I think she meant the idea that moral/cultural relativism is not a tenable philosophy - that we have to stand up for some basic universal principles and shut down offending groups even if they claim that their violations of these principles are protected under the umbrella of their religious freedoms. Yes, we need to be tolerant of the practices of cultures - but only to a certain point. At some point the traditions we have been called on to tolerate  are themselves tyrannical and oppressive, and need to be changed. Honor killings/genital mutilation/genocide/polygamy, etc etc etc. But enforcing laws/policies of foreign intervention against these particular practices does not constitute 'ending multiculturalism'. It's just keeping  multiculturalism within certain universal moral boundaries. But I guess I'm not a anthropologist, so could someone tell me what 'multiculturalism means?' if I have it wrong.

      West is a professor, first and foremost.  You're right, when you lecture people that haven't signed up for your class, you're treading on thin ice.  But the back and forth was fantastic anyway.

      I didn't get her reference to multicultralism either.  I might get her book, though, just because she intrigues me.

        And one of her many points that got sorta glossed over (mostly due to time and other topics I feel, not due to any real disagreement) was that the way Americans use the term "poverty" is sort of relative to extreme-poverty where kids climb on trash dumps to scrounge for any crumb of food.

        She was referencing what she saw everyday in her life growing up, and the implication was that sometimes when statistics & politicians in America use the term "living in poverty", that standard is way higher than the way she thinks of that term as it applies to 3rd world countries.

        Also, I want to "third" the notion cited above re: her use of the term "multi-culteralism". It was fascinating what she was just starting to talk about ( re de-programming the polygomist mothers, ending these practices -- and how she approved very much in idea of government cracking down on this... And how those crackdowns here would lead to crackdowns on other abusive practices elsewhere in world... listing, for example, female genital mutilation.

        It was in this context she spoke of the end of multi-culturalism... but again, time ran out for her to continue.

        Lastly, nailbender, I am so glad you have maintained that Pelosi quote as your sigline. Isn't it utterly amazing how we (as a country) can look at that quote and what she meant, and reconcile that with the way Congress on a daily basis fails utterly to do the baseline job they are paid to do?

        And why couldn't that ever be asked at a debate?

        I look forward to next election cycle when McJoan & Others can, once again, hold the only REAL debate of the entire 2 year period... only next time it will be pumped out through new progressive video distribution outlets, and more people will be able to see it.

      as you could see people like West and Jeremy are more used to very seamlessly interjecting frequently to make points. I actually like a lot the fact that Markos isn't in that impatient "I gotta add to that" mode like so many guests on that show, who are just conditioned by the media system to interject often and then shut up a minute for someone else, then interject again.

      I'm not saying it makes for riveting television (i say that respectfully), but I like being able to watch someone absorbing what others are saying without having the feeling that "I must now add my 2 cents to that thought"... But when he DOES speak, he has such excellent command of the subject matter.

      It's hard on a show where there are 4 or 5 people gathered around a table to provide a real continuity of participation -- unless one agresssively goes after those pause spaces and CLAIMS them. ANd I think Markos is so respectful as a person to the other talent gathered around the table, that he is not (unlike so many other TV talk show guests) insistent upon talking over others, or ensuring he grabs x percentage of screen time.

      EVen people whose views & insight I respect a lot are nevertheless somewhat annoying on talk shows when you can see in their eyes that they feel compelled to jut in with a comment, simply becaise they are there.

      Still, all that said, Markos has so much he could say, and share some new insights that the pundit class are generally clueless about, that maybe a slightly more aggressive positioning in how he grabs for time to vocalize more observations would benefit both him and the audience.
