Obama has more than twice as much cash on hand as McCain and Clinton COMBINED.
Sun Apr 20, 2008 at 08:02:57 PM PDT
The Clinton campaign's F.E.C. report for March 2008 is not, as of 10:40pm ET Sunday, on file. That said we do have the numbers for Obama and McCain, and they confirm the sense that Democrats have the advantage this cycle.
Barack Obama began April with $51 million on hand. John McCain, who solidified his hold on the Republican nomination two months ago? The certain Republican nominee has less than one quarter of Obama's cash on hand. [UPDATE: If the Clinton spokesman Jay Carson is telling the truth, Barack Obama has more than twice as much cash on hand than both McCain and Clinton combined. The diary now has the reports for both Clinton and Obama below the fold.]
More after the jump.
From the AP:
WASHINGTON (AP) — New campaign finance reports show Barack Obama entered April with $51 million in the bank to mount his campaign for the White House...
Aides say Clinton raised about $20 million in March, but she had not filed her report with the Federal Election Commission a couple of hours before the deadline.
Republican John McCain's report showed he raised $15 million and had nearly $12 million in the bank.
The AP report did not specify breakdowns between money raised for the primary and money raised for the general election, though if the February numbers are any measure, probably more than 80% of Obama's cash may be spent in the primaries.
Hillary Clinton's report is still not in, but a guess (based on estimates that Obama is outspending her by as much as 4 to 1 in Pennsylvania TV advertising) is that she has far less cash on hand than Obama. While she did have a large fundraiser with Elton John earlier this month, her fundraising through February 29, 2008 shows little cash on hand. I will update this diary if her March report comes in before I log off tonight. My best guess is that Obama maintains his advantage over her. We know for a fact that he is dominating McCain even as McCain does not have to compete with other Republican candidates for donations. Even if he relies upon the RNC and 527s to supplement his campaign, he is at an unusual disadvantage for a Republican presidential nominee. The over 1.3 million donors contributing to Obama's campaign continue to make his the best financed campaign of the cycle.
UPDATE 1:
Bloomberg:
Democrat Barack Obama started this month with about five times more cash than Hillary Clinton for their race for the Democratic presidential nomination, according to figures released by the campaigns.
Obama, an Illinois senator, had $42.5 million available for spending on primary elections and caucuses, his campaign said today. Clinton, a New York senator, had about $8 million, according to her spokesman, Jay Carson.
Still waiting on the F.E.C. report, but if that figure is true, McCain has more cash on hand than Hillary Clinton -- and Obama has more than twice as much as both of them combined.
(And Obama has about $10 million raised that can only be used for the general campaign -- about one-fifth of his total cash on hand.)
UPDATE 2: For comparison's sake, here's a link to Trepanator's diary with Obama's March report, and the F.E.C. table of Obama's February report:
