I Get Email.

Mon Apr 21, 2008 at 09:48:26 AM PDT

Everyone has one.

The relative that is the reason why you wished you hadn't given out your email address to your relatives.

My stepgrandmother, in the Southwest, was widowed after my grandfather died. As she had married him after my grandmother died, well into my teen angst period, we were obviously never close.

The only contact I get from her are forwarded spam emails. Normally, I don't take a look at them, but I was wondering if she, like the experience of many people here, was sending me winger spam - so this morning I checked.

And, oh God, was she ever.

Emails,in their entirety, below the fold.

Subject: Fw: John McCain's remarks about the Pledge of Allegiance

There was a photo of Obama with others on a stage at a Political rally.  During the playing of the National Anthem the others put their hands over their heart as all of us do to show respect for our Flag.

Obama showed his respect for the Flag with a double handed grip of his crotch.

These subtle disrespectful acts are only the tip of the ice berg.  There is a racist America hating no experience being inside that shell that will emerge if he gets the power of the Presidency.

BW

Please send this to as many people as you can.  Our country needs to know about the man, Obama, who will not pledge the flag or say the pledge.

John McCain's remarks about the Pledge of Allegiance

This is truly a must read

'The Pledge of Allegiance' - by Senator John McCain

'As you may know, I spent five and one half years as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. In the early years of our imprisonment, the NVA kept us in solitary confinement or two or three to a cell. In 1971 the NVA moved us from these conditions of isolation into large rooms with as many as 30 to 40 men to a room.

This was, as you can imagine, a wonderful change and was a direct result of the efforts of millions of Americans on behalf of a few hundred POWs 10,000 miles from home.

One of the men who moved into my room was a young man named Mike Christian.

Mike came from a small town near Selma , Alabama . He didn't wear a pair of shoes until he was 13 years old. At 17, he enlisted in the US Navy. He later earned a commission by going to Officer Training School Then he became a Naval Flight Officer and was shot down and captured in 1967. Mike had a keen and deep appreciation of the opportunities this country and our military provide for people who want to work and want to succeed.

As part of the change in treatment, the Vietnamese allowed some prisoners to receive packages from home. In some of these packages were handkerchiefs, scarves and other items of clothing.

Mike got himself a bamboo needle. Over a period of a couple of months, he created an American flag and sewed on the inside of his shirt.

Every afternoon, before we had a bowl of soup, we would hang Mike's shirt on the wall of the cell and say the Pledge of Allegiance.
I know the Pledge of Allegiance may not seem the most important part of our day now, but I can assure you that in that stark cell it was indeed the most important and meaningful event.

One day the Vietnamese searched our cell, as they did periodically, and discovered Mike's shirt with the flag sewn inside, and removed it.

That evening they returned, opened the door of the cell, and for the benefit of all of us, beat Mike Christian severely for the next couple of hours. Then, they opened the door of the cell and threw him in. We cleaned him up as well as we could.

The cell in which we lived had a concrete slab in the middle on which we slept Four naked light bulbs hung in each corner of the room.

As I said, we tried to clean up Mike as well as we could. After the excitement died down, I looked in the corner of the room, and sitting there beneath that dim light bulb with a piece of red cloth, another shirt and his bamboo needle, was my friend, Mike Christian. He was sitting there with his eyes almost shut from the beating he had received, making another American flag. He was not making the flag because it made Mike Christian feel better. He was making that flag because he knew how important it was to us to be able to Pledge our allegiance to our flag and country.

So the next time you say the Pledge of Allegiance, you must never forget the sacrifice and courage that thousands of Americans have made to build our nation and promote freedom around the world. You must remember our duty, our honor, and our country.'

'I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisable, with liberty and justice for all.'

oh........and then you have this clown, who refuses to place his hand on his heart and say the pledge......

Subject: Remember this picture on election day!

Let's all remember this on election day...if you have family serving in the military, make sure you send it along.  I don't care for Hillary,

but at least she shows respect for the country she lives in!

I had heard about this but a picture is definitely worth 1000 words! God save us!!!

Senator Barack Obama, Governor Bill Richardson, Senator Hillary Clinton and Ruth Harkin stand during the national anthem.
Barack Hussein Obama's photo (that's his real name)......the article said he REFUSED TO NOT ONLY PUT HIS HAND ON

HIS HEART DURING THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE, BUT REFUSED TO SAY THE PLEDGE.....
how can a man like this expect to be our next C ommander-in-Chief

I checked Snopes on this and it is true ... food for thught nll

Begin forwarded message:

                       Canada& United States

                       Needs A Leader Like This!?

                       Prime Minister John Howard -Australia

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law

were told on Wednesday to get out ofAustralia,

as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head

                       off potential terror attacks.

Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims

on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies

                       monitoring the nation's mosques.Quote:

                       'IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT.

Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying

about whether we are offending some individual or their

culture. Since the terrorist attacks onBali, we have

experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority

                       of Australians.'

'This culture has been developed over two centuries

of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men

and women who have sought freedom'

'We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese,

Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language.

Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society

                       Learn the language!'

'Most Australians believe in God. This is not some

Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because

Christian men and women, on Christian principles,

founded this nation, and this is clearly documented.

It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls

of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you

consider another part of the world as your new home,

because God is part of our culture.'

'We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why.

All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony

                       and peaceful enjoyment with us.'

'This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE,

and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this.

But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping

about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our

Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one

                       other great Australian freedom,

                       'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'.'

'If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force

you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the

                       country YOU accepted.'

Maybe if we circulate this amongst ourselves,

United Stateand Canadian citizens will find the

backbone to start speaking and voicing the same truths.

If you agree ... please SEND THIS ON??

                       ?

                       ?

Again, formatting is about right, be thankful you don't get the experience of the huge, bolded, italicized, multicoloured fonts chosen by the brave correspondent. Possibly during kindergarten paste-eating flashbacks.

Someone needs to break it to the poor bastard that John Howard lost his seat over crap like this. I know, I will.

For those of you that aren't aware - this is the kind of stuff going around out there.

Is that a veiled reference to the 9 1/2 reasons to vote for Barack?

  •  Or go to You Tube and send her the pic (8+ / 0-)

of Obama leading the Senate in the Pledge - with his hand over his heart. Or his swearing in ceremony with his hand on the Bible. Or a few days ago when he actually wore a flag pin that a disabled vet gave him.  Sometimes pictures say it better than words.

  •  I got that pledge one, and this is my response: (8+ / 0-)

Below this note is a powerful story about the pledge of allegiance, told under the most difficult circumstances imaginable. I am including a freshened up version, since sometimes forwardings add odd line breaks and so on.

However after thar story was originally another story about Senator Obama, one that has been corrected in the past, and I am sure that all fair minded people would want the facts when they think about the current candidates. Here are some of those facts:

Obama Said His Grandfather Taught Him The Pledge And To Put His Hand Over His Heart, "During The National Anthem You Sing." Obama said, "My grandfather taught me how to say the Pledge of Allegiance when I was 2...During the Pledge of Allegiance you put your hand over your heart. During the national anthem you sing." [AP, 11/7/07]

Obama Spokesman Bill Burton Said Obama Was Not "Making Any Sort Of Statement, And Any Suggestion To The Contrary Is Ridiculous. "Asked whether Obama normally puts his hand over his heart while listening to the national anthem, Obama spokesman Bill Burton replied by e-mail: "Sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn't. In no way was he making any sort of statement, and any suggestion to the contrary is ridiculous." [Washington Post, 11/2/07]

Obama Voted To Require Pledge Of Allegiance Recital Requirement. Obama voted to require the Pledge of Allegiance to be recited each school day by students in secondary education institutions receiving public funds. [92nd GA, SB 1634, 3/7/02, 3R P; 54-0-0; P.A. 92-0612, 7/3/02; 92nd GA, HB 2077, 11/28/01, 3R P; 56-0-0]
This video shows just one of many times that Senator Obama has taken part in the pledge, with his hand over his heart: http://www.youtube.com/...

Washington Post Awarded the person Who Put The Obama/Pledge Of Allegiance Email Into Circulation "Four Pinocchios" On Its Fact Checking Scale, Which Classifies The Attack As A "Whopper." "Anonymous attacks by e-mail are, or at least should be, un-American. This particular one was also wrong on the facts: the ceremony in question had nothing to do with the pledge of the allegiance. We award the scoundrel who put the e-mail into circulation four Pinocchios." [Washington Post, 11/2/07]

Email Made False Claims About The Content Of A Time Article. "Oddly, the accurate caption from Time is included in the chain e-mail. But someone has added that "the article said" Obama refused to say the pledge and would not put his hand on his heart. There is no such article on the Time Web site and searches of the Web and newspaper-magazine databases could only find blog postings that repeat the claim from the e-mail. It's unclear where the allegation originated." [St. Petersburg Times, 11/9/07]
AND WAS CALLED SCURRILOUS AND FALSE BY OTHER NEWS SOURCES

"Scurrilous." "A scurrilous new e-mail is circulating about Barack Obama." [Slate, 11/8/07]

"Addressed And Debunked." "Today, the Obama campaign explained that the photo was taken not during the pledge of allegiance but during the star spangled banner. Said Obama, "I was taught by my grandfather that you put your hand over your heart during the pledge, but during the Star Spangled Banner, you sing!" Of course, it doesn't really matter that Obama has addressed and debunked the e-mail because it's going to keep circulating." [The Nation, 11/8/07]
In addition, Senator Obama has led the pledge of allegiance many times in the U.S. Senate.

Powerful as the pledge of allegiance is, we need to remember that George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln never said it. It is one powerfully worded expression of our love for America, but our deeds are even more powerful ways to show that we love our country. Surely one of those way is seeing that justice is done, and that the truth is told.

When it's been sent to several people, I send the response to all of them (bcc: if there are a bunch). We have been silent too long. The Obama fact checker is a great resource.

I did see Obama on The View the other day and will say that I thought he did a great job. He is very convincing and has a natural way of making you feel at ease and at home. I admire people like that. My biggest concern with him is how do we know he is who he says he is. How do we know that he is not a terrorist planning that great take down? We believed and trusted the terrorist of 9/11 and gave them flying lessons and allowed them do what they did to our country. How do we know that before Obama became the religion he is now wasn't brought up the same way Iraqi's are when they are just children and there aim is to destroy America. It is a very scary thought. There are so many terrorist cells in our own country right now. How do you know who to trust. I feel for the people that are Muslims in our country and they should not be discriminated against but on the other hand every time Reggie has to go War because of their culture it makes me look at them differently. I was raised in a very racist home by my father and some what by my mother but I was never that way and couldn't understand the big deal. We are all made of flesh and blood. Then we moved to NC and it all changed. I saw so much racism and and it wasn't really whites against the blacks either. Oprah is racist to me. People say we need to get over it and we are all created equal but then Oprah will have black pride and black this on her programs talking down about white people and it's on the news al the time. To me that just feeds the fire and it is being turned around to the white people and all we can do is just sit and take it. Black people still feel that we are racist against them but have you ever noticed that is the black people in the lower income housings and other places that are the majority of the people on the news that are dealing to kids, raping, murdering and robbing people. In some ways they use there race as a crutch to never better them selves and never use their race as a possitve reinforcement. I think the same thing about Muslims. Unfortunately it is their kind that has got us in to this mess and causing thousands of soldiers there lives and hundreds of thousands of families great heartache because of the war. They have an obligation to try and fix this in there own countries, just like black people that don't want to be discriminated against should fix there own issues and quit blaming it on other people. Back to the original thought. I just would hate to see Obama in office and we find out that once again we were so naive and he has completely taken over our country. I could be wrong. I don't know for a fact, but then again "Who do's"?

    I responded with this:
    Hi Hon,
Here are the facts about Obama on Obama's campaign site. It is a very thorough site with plenty of back up, not just his words alone.
    http://www.barackobama.com/...
There is lots of info here.

I also suggest you check with snopes for any info on him. There are lots of rumours spread on the internet.
    http://www.snopes.com/...

Here is where you can contact him with specific questions:
    http://my.barackobama.com/...

    Please read:
    http://www.dailykos.com/...

As far as his family life, his white grandmother and sister continue to live in Honolulu. His sister is also a teacher. I know he attended school from 5th grade on on a scholarship at Punahou. I know he was born at the Queen's hospital. I know his father was raised a Muslim, but that not make him a terrorist and that he came to University at Hawaii on a scholarship. I know that by the time he married his mother who was studying anthroplogy at UH, he was no longer a practicing Muslim and was an atheist as she was studying all differnt religions teachings. Gosh I look at my own bookshelf and see 2 different copies of the bible, the baghavad Gita, native American teachings, the Tao etc among my books. I find religion interesting. Heck I have a regular Sunday meeting in my home with the 7th day adventists to study the endtimes! LOL
You should watch vids of his speeches and town hall meetings etc. at youtube to see if he is a truthteller or not. I know that he as done a lot in his life against the odds, graduating with honors from college, working to build up the community in Chicago and could have taken a highpaying job when he returned to Chicago. Instead he is a believer in the power of the people. He still teaches 3 classes a year on Consitutional Law and wants to roll back the Bush signing statements to bring back all our rights and protections agian. That's extrememly important. We do not have to ive in a culture of fear. Tha is just a way to control people. It doesn't solve any problems. I am still not positive that 19 people with boxcutters took out the WTC etc, either. That just seems too silly. There are too many questions regarding wht happened. I blame the Suadis more than anyone becuase all those people who hijacked the planes came from there. NOt IRaq!! We have no business making war on another country that had nothing to do with any of 911. It has taken away the energy needed in Afghanistan and al Queda. Even Pakistan now has a new governement and say they are not going to be the US killing fields any longer. No one else in the owrld believes this war is right. No one.
My personal feeling, is that in this country we have had so little truth from those in power for so long now, especially the last 8 years have been horrendous, that we automatically think all politicians are bs. But there is something very different and refreshing about this man. His honesty is genuine. The good citizens of the USA are not used to that any longer. The last time a president spoke to truth was when Kennedy was in office. I want someone on my side, one of the masses in the ever-shrinking middle class. The lower classes of all colors have felt disenfranchised for so long, that it is great to have a sense of hope that thngs will change, that a president actually cares about us, the people. I would rather be a hopemonger than a warmonger. I really don;'t knwo how we can afford to go on with a war that costs 10 billion dollars a month, has our military so stretched thin and exhausted, that when they return home injured they don't receive the care they deserve for life, that military peeps and their famlies don't get raises for doing the valuable work they do. And all Cheney says is "SO"? THAT is what makes me incredibly angry. There are assholes in the WH who have NEVER been to war and haven't got as clue what it entails calling the shots while destroying our Constitution and standing in the world because they don't want anyone else's (generals etc.) advice???? I will never vote McCain. He is too old, becoming forgetful and ssenile and after being pushed around terribly by Bush in the past, has become his poodle? NO way! And Hillary has lost my respect. Well she hardly ever had it after she stayed with Bill after the Lewinsky thing. I don't believe in staying with someone who has constant affairs. Plus I haven't forgotten about Whitewater. That has never been settled to anyone's satisfactions. Talk about having bad things to hide.
Have a beautiful day. And do what you can to inform yourself. I think it is a huge mistake to write Obama off. I think he is just what we need right now. Otherwise we are going to lose more jobs int his country and sink further into debt and an economic collapse. We are all just flesh and blood. We've been divided too long.
Remember, divided we fall, united we stand.
    Love ya, gg

I have a lot of misguided friends who still think that the conservative Republican party represents their interests - small business owners, working guys, salt of the earth Americans.

I usually just delete the emails, occasionally send out a Snopes link to debunk some of the factual errors, and only recently have begun to "reply to all" with some thoughtful replies and rebuttals - in which I sometimes  make a case for Barack Obama over John McCain.

The response I get back is interesting.  I get some "Obama - yo mama" stuff, but I also get some replies from people willing to talk about the issues. Once we get past the labels (right/left, Repub/Dem, conservative/librul) and talk pragmatically about what is good for America, some guys are surprised to find out that Obama's vision for America includes them.
