Words do matter - new Iran ad

Wed Apr 23, 2008 at 06:55:38 AM PDT

After last night, I went to bed strategizing. I want primary season to be over.Obama needs something to cause a little controversy for Hillary and put her on defense. I think her words about obliterating Iran need some further discusssion.

This ad might just do that. It would play to Obama's strengths, not be too negative, but be hard hitting. Hillary has tried to use Obama's ability to speak as a weakness thru out the whole campaign, constantly throwing out that he is "just words". This ad would be a good way to turn it back on her.

Not expensive to shoot and something that would get a lot of air time and discussion on tv.

Open with video of each

George Bush- Bring it on
John McCain-Bomb, bomb, Iran
Hillary Clinton-Obliterate Iran

cut to Obama looking into the camera.

Obama-It's going to take a cool head  and a
different kind of words to get us out of
Iraq and restore our reputation in the world.
     Words do matter.

I'm Barack Obama and I approve this message

I do think this could be a powerful ad, and put Hillary on defense.

If this is going to end, he's going to have to inflict some blows, and take her down a notch.

She has shown no hesitation to jump on Obama's words, and stir up controversy over nothing.

Only difference, her words are not a manufactured controversy. They were deadly serious and show how she would conduct foreign policy.

Words do matter.

Hillary IS the warmonger.  and she's dumb on war.
she wants to send YOUR kid overseas.  she wants to spend YOUR money.

not in our name.  not with our sons and daughters.  not with our money.

    fuck that hillary.

Fantastic. I also blog here, and also on the Huffington Post. Just get ready for my morning posting, which will center on the Clinton Iran statement, which also kept me up last night. I hope the text of your "ad" gets widely circulated.

and in a more perfect world, it would win Obama votes.

In this one, I'm afraid it would lose him votes.

    •  why do you think it would lose him votes (1+ / 0-)

what light do you think it would it shine on Obama that would be bad for him? Do you think it would start a conversation about Iran where he would look weak? If so, how/why?

      •  I guess you have no idea (0+ / 0-)

how much cheering in the streets there would be if the bombs started falling on Iran.

Once we started losing that war, too, Americans would sober up.  But bombing to bits the cities of a hated enemy has always been good for a cheap high.

      •  Obama has equivocated somewhat (0+ / 0-)

regarding Iran. He's said that US policy should be to deny Iran nuclear weapons. He's also said we should pursue active diplomacy toward that end, including a willingness to use strong sanctions.

Thus far, there's not much (rhetorical) difference between Obama and Clinton.

On the use of force, Obama has said he won't take the military option of the table and that he would respond forcefully to Iran. But he hasn't been as explicit as Clinton.

This kind of ad would put Obama on the spot. Implicitly, it projects a less militant approach than Clinton's. But it's not clear that Obama wants to promise not to "obliterate Iran" in response to an Iranian attack on Israel.

Drawing attention to Obama's equivocation cannot help the campaign.

    •  So do I. Great concept. (0+ / 0-)

Not sure this party is yet ready to fully tussle out the issue of how to deal with Iran.

      Very cross-cutting.

But, there seems to be far fewer war drummers around here than two summers ago during the Isareli incursion into Lebanon.

I'm actually somewhat encouraged by the negative reaction Hillary's "obliterate" comment has received.  Even the NYT thought it went way over the edge.

  •  Love your ad idea Sherri... (0+ / 0-)

you should forward it to the Obama campaign.

  •  I have a simialr thought... (0+ / 0-)

In a possible future it's 3 AM in the morning (Red Phone)...

    McCain: Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran

    And it's ringing....

    Hillary: We could obliterate them.

Would you rather do something now to avoid a future like that?

It's going to take a cool head  and a
different kind of words to get us out of
Iraq and restore our reputation in the world.

Words are important but judgement matters most.
I opposed the occupation of Iraq and my opponent(s) did not. Judgement. Is America safer today after spending $3 trillion and exhausting our military forces? Judgement.

How can you measure judgement? Words and Actions.

    McCain: Bomb, Bomb, Bomb...
    HRC: Obliterate...

    Judgement. Use yours.
