Dissing American workers -- McCain-style
Fri Apr 25, 2008 at 08:24:48 AM PDT
Josh Marshall has posted the following exchange McCain had with AFL-CIO trade union workers in 2006. Marshall used it to suggest McCain has no knowledge of economics.
Now, my friends, I'll offer anybody here $50 an hour if you'll go pick lettuce in Yuma this season and pick for the whole season. So -- OK? Sign up. OK.
You sign up. You sign up, and you'll be there for the whole season, the whole season. OK? Not just one day. Because you can't do it, my friend.
Josh notes that if such work was paid at $50/hour the worker would be making over $100,000 a year!
This an an amazingly condescending view of the American worker by someone who is one of the wealthiest men in the Senate because his second wife is worth over $100 million.
On Youtube, the only clip of this is from a radio show with . . . . cough . . . cough . . . Mark Levin! If you listen to this clip, listen to Levin at the end and how disgusted he is with McCain taunting of the workers because they won't pick lettuce for $50/hour.
I wonder if one of the reporters on the straight-talk express could ask the good Senator on the record if he still believes what he said two years ago: Does he still believe that American workers hate hard work so much that they would not pick lettuce even if they were paid $50/hour?
