        as confrontational as Colbert, but likable enough to keep a rough crowd on his side, plus his usual brand of silliness and absurdity.  Hard truths everybody laughed at--so he's not as grandly perfect as Colbert was, he's still a great comedian and he got his share of good digs in at all sides.

    He is not as surreal as Colbert (I mean that in a good way), but he is great. And he is getting in some punches:

    I feel sorry for whoever the Democratic nominee is going to be. They'll have to face up to the Republican attack machine - Bill O'Reilly, Robert Novak, George Stephanopoulos...

    The New York Times didn't get a table at the dinner because they thought these events hurt journalistic credibility. I thought that was what Jayson Blair and Judith Miller were for.

      I do think he got some good zingers in, it was a bit more subtle, and I do think that CF is one of the late night hosts I like the most. Colbert completely missed the audience at the dinner, but he was awesome to those of us who really wanted to see Bush humiliated. And I don't even think that Bush, et. al. got it.

      I like Ferguson, and I did like his bit. A friendly disagreement.

      •  What made Colbert so great...

        ...was that it was more performance art than comedy. He stayed in character the whole time.

        Something a lot of people miss is that he (and Stewart too) are NOT political satirists. They are MEDIA satirists. The media is their target not politicians. So putting himself up there in front of a press-filled audience and mocking them mercilessly to their faces was awesome.

        Most of them either didn't get it or were offended. There was very little laughter in the room. But Colbert plowed ahead. That's what made it so surreal. His audience wasn't in the room. He was doing it for all the people who would view it later and forever.

          I think you are exactly right. That is what I like about both Colbert and Stewart. They are skewering the media and politics and it is funny to me.

          You exactly hit it, Colbert was hitting the media as well as GWB and that was why his audience did not find it funny.

          Ferguson did have some great observations and he presented it in a gentler manner, he did not make me laugh, but I do respect him a lot.

          Colbert is a crazy-ass genius, I have so much respect for him. It is bizarre how I still meet people every now and then that think is is not satirical at all. Genius.

  is telling the NY Times to shut up because they decided it was inappropriate to mingle with the people they cover.  I actually think the Times got it right finally and I'd like to see this dinner eliminated along with any other 'socializing' between serious media and the politicos they are covering.

  •  This Dinner Was the Chance to Let Off Steam

    The dinner served to let people who were at each other's throats have a sincere opportunity to be social and maybe connect a little. There's a big difference between being in each others pockets, staying at arm's length, and being totally coopted. When they were at arm's length this dinner relieved the tension and reminded them they didn't hate each other.

    That's not his usual style. He was extremely nervous. I  felt sorry for him. The audience just didn't get him. When the camera panned the crowd, there were so many people with sullen faces (bitter even) and I think I even saw one guy who appeared to be asleep.
