  • A Mother's Day recipe:

    Church Supper Chicken and Wild Rice Hot Dish Recipe

    INGREDIENTS:

       * 1/4 cup unsalted butter
       * 1/2 cup chopped yellow onion
       * 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
       * 1-1/2 cups chicken stock
       * 1-1/2 cups half-and-half cream
       * 1 teaspoon salt
       * 1/2 teaspoon fresh-ground black pepper
       * 1/4 teaspoon fresh-grated nutmeg
       * 1/4 cup dried mushrooms, such as morels or porcini
       * 3 cups diced cooked chicken
       * 2 Tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
       * 3 cups cooked wild rice
       * 1 cup grated brick, Muenster or other mild white cheese

    PREPARATION:
    Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and saute it until it is translucent, 5 to 7 minutes. Sprinkle on the flour and stir to blend it in. Pour in the stock and half-and-half cream, and bring just to a simmer, whisking frequently. Simmer gently for 5 minutes, whisking often, then add the salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Stir in the dried mushrooms, chicken, and parsley.

    Lightly oil, or spray with cooking spray, a 2-quart casserole dish. Spread the wild rice in the bottom of the casserole. Spoon in the chicken mixture, then sprinkle the cheese over the top.

    Bake for 30 minutes, or until the casserole is hot and bubbling. Serve hot.

      kids and i communed in the first round and left.  single parenting during church is hard.  we were there a total of 2.5 hours.

          secured all the balloons to a weight.  we have a very high central ceiling over a round sanctuary.  balloons have gone astray before.  

          i know the lds people go for 3 hours at a crack, but the kids are doing different activities all the time i think.  

          the clock hit noon (90 min into the service) and communion was just starting.  i grabbed the kids, told the usher we needed to commune early, communed and hustled them out.  daughter melted down during the first lesson, so i was happy to make it through communion.

          I am so ready for Ordinary Time. Lent was too early this year, and it's totally messed with my life. I think having the liturgical year so out of whack is harder on me than messing with my sleep cycles, I kid you not.

          Corpus Christi is one of my favorite days of the year - but note that when I wrote that piece two years ago, it was June 18 - a perfectly decent day. Not May.

          One of my priests told me tonight that Mothers' Day doesn't fall on Pentecost for another 220 years. <whew>

            roman easter was an entire moon cycle before both passover and orthodox easter.

            the only hypothesis i have is that the moon was NOT full as it passed over jerusalem and istanbul, but was full as it passed over rome.  

            but shouldn't easter be measured from where easter happened?  

            i love the special seasons - they're so focused.  sometimes it seems like the sundays after pentecost go on forever.  even though we lutherans have reformation to break it up a bit.  june, july, august, september, october, and november aaauuuggghhh like 28 sundays after pentecost!

  First of all, thanks to you, Father, for giving my family and John’s family such strong women and kind men. Talking to them all today reminded me of how lucky we are. We are a couple who can only thrive within a supportive family and we have that in abundance on both sides.

  Secondly, please keep my husband John in your prayers. He is having complications and needs your prayers to keep his pain, nausea and temperature down until the doctors can resolve what they will do for him. I hate seeing him so uncomfortable.

  All this pales, of course, in comparison to the families in Myanmar. May those that survive, thrive; may those that do not be taken rapidly into Your loving arms and the warmth and comfort of their heavenly home. Do with the junta what You will.

  Love to all my Brothers & Sisters, and deep affection to His Wholly Irreverance, pastordan, without whom I’d have no place to go on Sunday night.

      Does your local hospital have an 'ask a nurse' line?

      If he's vomiting blood, you need to take him to an ER; if it's dry heaves and bile, it might be gall stones, gall bladder attack [although they are usually painful] - could be food poisoning, could be a million things.

      You need to call a professional.

        No, he doesn't - they just tell you to go to the Urgent Care center, which closed fifteen minutes ago.

        No ask-a-nurse line.

        No blood, no bile, still bringing stuff up.  

        His mother says when he was a baby he couldn't take more than a few ounces of formula at a time, and she thinks his stomach just has an abnormally small capacity.  She could be right.  

        We will be seeing the doctor ASAP, and if I have to, I'll call 911.  He's the world's worst patient, and my suggestions of going to the ER have been met with sulphurous responses.

          fevers right away. Sometimes warm compresses on the tummy help settle things down.

          If you have baking soda, dissolve about a quarter of a teaspoon in 8 oz of warm water. That might help stop the spasms. Helps me when I get sick like that.

          try Pedialyte, despite the name - force it. Key thing is to keep hydrated. Even if he's yorking up everything he tries to put down, it won't get him behind.
