Excerpt:
You’ve been pretty quiet about your support for Obama since endorsing him. Why? Nobody’s asked me. But, I tell you what. As soon as he gets the nomination, it will become a lot more noisy. Let me share this with you. The check that I wrote to Senator Obama is the first check I’ve ever written to a politician who was running for local, state, or federal office. So you see him as a unique candidate. Yeah. There are several reasons. One, I think he’s just a solid man. He’s a solid, spiritual man, and I have a great deal of respect for him as an individual. Number two, when he initially announced, they said, "Well, he will be a symbolic candidate. He has no chance of winning." And then he began to attract, you know, crowds of 20, 30, 40,000. Then they’d say, "Well, he may attract twenty, thirty thousand folk at a time, but he won’t be able to raise any money." And then he started raising a ton of money... Then, they said, "Well, he’s not black enough." Well, clearly he is. Then they said, "He’s too black." Well, that’s ridiculous. Then they said, "Well, you know, he doesn’t like white folk because his pastor says whatever." And I think folks forget his mother was white, for goodness sake. The grandmother of his children are white. I mean it just--that’s just a ridiculous argument. Then, they said, "Well, he’s Muslim." And he’s confessed his faith--I would say that he’s more of a Christian than some folk who claim to be Christian, because he didn’t grow up in a Christian house... He had to declare his faith separate and distinct from his--from the house that he grew up in.

The Post reported in December that Jenna was going to teach at Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School in a low-income neighborhood. But after rumors flew that Jenna had actually started as a teaching assistant, the Post spoke to executive director Linda Moore. “Jenna Bush is not employed as a teacher at the school,” Moore said. Asked whether Jenna was working as an assistant teacher, Moore said: “I can’t confirm that.” That’s when Moore mentioned No Child Left Behind. She told the Post there are “some very strict requirements about who can be hired and what their credentials have to be, and they do apply to charter schools.” All Laura Bush’s spokesman would say is “Jenna Bush has started work.”

The most unsatisfying aspect of Bush's work is that it ends with many loose threads: Ana has not finished school or found work; her sister is still in an orphanage; she must tell her new boyfriend about her HIV infection. Bush addresses some of these points in an afterword, but as she notes, "Ana's story is still being written." Another notable feature of the book is its easy reading level. Although "Ana's Story" is being promoted heavily, it is not really designed for adults or advanced readers. Rather, it's targeted to students and teachers with a study guide and several reference sections. She is already collaborating on an illustrated children's book with her mother, first lady Laura Bush.

Currently, one of my neighborhood possums is displaying very un possum like behavior, going so far as to perch on the fence while we're outside or even sit in one of the patio chairs. I've named him Percy and all I have to say is that he's got a future in community organizing because this guy's a UNITER!

In his new book, TORTURE TEAM: RUMSFELD'S MEMO AND THE BETRAYAL OF AMERICAN VALUES, Philippe Sands draws on official documents and interviews with key players to explain how the U.S. Military went from interrogations strictly regulated by the U.S. ARMY FIELD MANUAL 34-52 to enhanced interrogations that included sleep deprivation, nudity, stress positions, and water boarding. As Sands explains in an interview with Scott Horton in THE NEW REPUBLIC: When the administration released the December 2002 and other memos, it told a story that essentially said this: The new interrogation techniques came from the bottom up and had nothing to do with policy decisions driven from the top. I wanted to explore the truth of that account, by trying to talk to as many of the people involved in the decision as I could

I Have Been in Torture Photos, Too, Counterpunch, June 4/6, 2004.
Exceprt:
ews of the ill-treatment of prisoners in Iraq created no great surprise in republican Ireland. We have seen and heard it all before. Some of us have even survived that type of treatment. Suggestions that the brutality in Iraq was meted out by a few miscreants aren't even seriously entertained here. We have seen and heard all that before as well. But our experience is that, while individuals may bring a particular impact to their work, they do so within interrogative practices authorised by their superiors... ...After the first initial flurry, which I resisted briefly, the beating became a dogged punching and kicking match with me as the punch bag. I was forced into the search position, palms against the walls, body at an acute angle, legs well spread. They beat me systematically. I fell to the ground. Buckets of water were flung over me. I was stripped naked. Once I was aroused from unconsciousness by a British army doctor. He seemed concerned about damage to my kidneys. After he examined me he left and the beatings began again. At one point a plastic bucket was placed over my head. I was left in the company of two uniformed British soldiers. I could see their camouflage trousers and heavy boots from beneath the rim of the bucket. One of them stubbed his cigarette out on my wrist. His mate rebuked him...

by Sven at My Silver State on Sun May 11, 2008 at 06:01:31 AM PDT
Quite a few Democratic senators and governors have similar objections in number and content...support for the recent bankruptcy bills or other bad/dangerous bills, scandals new and old, health concerns, support for Joe Lieberman's reelection (that one including Barack Obama himself), and yet their names are still bandied about freely without much thought.
by ourprez08 on Sun May 11, 2008 at 09:40:45 AM PDT
since you won't name any names I can only assume who you mean. But I seriously doubt any of them contributed to putting Bush/Cheney in the White House. Honestly, Sandra O'Connor is as unserious a candidate for VP as they come. Attacking Democratic Senators and Governors won't make your suggestion any better.
by Sven at My Silver State on Sun May 11, 2008 at 09:58:51 AM PDT
It's a bit unserious, but still my favorite Republican name.
by ourprez08 on Sun May 11, 2008 at 10:19:32 AM PDT
from some of the categories I listed above:
Joe Biden has had brain surgery twice and never quite recovered his national reputation after his '88 Neil Kinnock plagiarism scandals, also he's close to credit card companies and help push through the terrible bankruptcy bill and he says weirdly racist things sometimes, though I do not believe he is a racist at heart. I would not support him for v.p. or even Secretary of State, but he is still consistently mentioned.
Barbara Boxer, I think would be a pretty good choice if she and Obama could not both be pointed to for their "most liberal" voting records--even despite the fact that those metrics, as Obama has pointed out, are far from definitive and should be argued against. Boxer also lied about Lieberman's record on abortion while supporting his reelection and never retracted those statements, though I do not believe she is a secret Republican or anti-choicer. Her name still comes up once in a while.
Bill Richardson would be beaten to death by the GOP for the multiple national security blunders and scandals which occurred on his watch as Energy Secretary, which the first Baker-Hamilton commission (with Howard Baker instead of James) laid squarely at his feet, and which he took responsibility for but has never fully explained.
Jim Webb is a former Reagan administration official who voted wrong on the important FISA bill, and who has only won one squeaker of an election in Virginia over a racist remark, and yet he is often cited as Virginia's favorite son, and able to put that state in play, which I find questionable at best. Generally, I like him in the Senate, though, and hope he sticks around there and learns and grows more.
Finally, I think Hillary Rodham Clinton, Wes Clark, Ted Strickland and Ed Rendell all went to far in attacking Barack Obama in this primary season to be seriously considered, but they all still have their supporters who would argue I'm an idiot and we could "heal the party" by choosing one of them.

Obama's comment (where he said "in fifty ...seven States" and got a laugh from the young 'uns) is going around Freeperville like wildfire because they think they have him.
They're trying to equate it to Dan Quayle 'potatoe'.
And the funniest thing?
1 - it's a phrase that has been in use around the net for a few years now (the full phrase is "that's illegal in fifty-seven States").
2 - there's even a YouTube video from a couple of months back called "Illegal in 57 States"
3 - all this information is available to ...well, anyone. Anyone with an internet connection and a will to seek out Google.
I posted full details, and a slap-down to the [f]right wingers, last night. Click here for the Obama video, and how the Freepers have shot themselves in the foot because of it.
It shows how out-of-touch the Conservatives really are.
I hope Obama follows it up with the "I'm a hundred... and four percent sure" quote from the movie Juno, just to see how many Freepers fall for that one too!!!

I am an Obama delegate from the great state of Missouri.
Four Kossaks were at the Convention & voted for me. Thanks to all!!
I am the female "at-large" delegate. I had already left the Convention after 14 hours. We did the alternate voting, and then I left b/c I didn't feel like I had enough votes & I was two hours from home and it was raining, etc. . . . About 20 minutes after I left - I got the call!! It was so SWEET!!!
And there was 800 Democrats at the Convention including Claire McCaskill, Ike Skelton, Dick Gephardt, Robin & Russ Carnahan, Lacy Clay. Unity was the theme of the day. I had lunch with Clinton people, and we talked mainly how the excitement of the primary would help our downticket races.
I am so excited!
Cheers!

I have to say, if we think politics is vicious now -- and it is in some ways -- the Hillary/Obama thing is a tea party next to years past. And campaigns are incredibly different. I'm reading Rick Perlstein's "Before the Storm" on the Goldwater days. One time Barry was campaigning in Georgia, when a supporter urged him to try his new soda, "Gold Water." Barry tasted ... spit it out and said, quote, "That tastes like piss! I wouldn't drink it in gin!" Can you imagine anyone doing that today? This was at a public rally. That candidate would be dead on the spot. Maybe it was more fun back then, though ... now people get the vapors over any utterance that hasn't been sanitized and bleached.

There was still some "secrecy," (no YouTube and such) and "political correctness" wasn't so rampant, either.

I've been thinking about what happens if/when Osama comes out with a tape the Friday before the election in November. And he says something like, "We welcome America's rejection of the Satan Bush's successor" or some such thing. The media-wingnut coalition will immediately spin this as an "endorsement" of Obama by the terrorists, who are "afraid" of McCain. Question: how does Obama counter? And do you think he has people working on these possibilities right now? I hope so, because it's pretty certain we're gonna face some mischief from Bin Laden again.

"The Joke is on Osama bin Laden, because as we withdraw from Iraq, we'll have more resources of all kinds to hunt for him."
He could follow up by pointing out that
Osama said the USA would be easier to beat than the USSR, thereby showing OBL thinks our democracy is a weakness. Is that what the Republicans are trying to imply? Well, we happen to think that our free speech, our freedom of the press, our right to vote, our democracy, are sources of strength, not weakness.

It would be out by NOW because right now Hillary and Bill are throwing the kitchen sink. Harold Ickes would have released it by now.
I think the October surprise was going to be Wright's "God Damn America" line. That got released too early. Perhaps something to do with Ayers.
But the reality is that Bush is Obama's "October surprise"...LOL!

Cheney in a big fake beard. The laugh did not sound like bin Laden's. We have already seen this with the meme that Hamas has endorsed Obama. I am waiting to hear that Nazrullah and Hizbullah have also endorsed Obama. This is really a silly game that only works for an electorate that stays steadfastly ignorant.

Dick Morris says the same thing; the problem is that none of them can say what Hillary as VP would bring to the table to strengthen the ticket. All they can point to is that with her as VP candidate that Obama will hold all the "working white people". Sooner or later, one of the talking heads is going to go a little bit too far and it may be Pat Buchanan whose newest idea is that a decade or so ago, Europeans were 25% of the population while Africans were 9%. Now projections are that Europeans will be 9% or so and Africans will be 25%. Someone even has a neat map drawn up showing how Europe will look once the Muslims reconquer the continent. Of course, the US has its own "Reconquista" to worry about (I have to quit reading RW blogs) where the readers complain that illegal aliens feel they owe first loyalty to their birth country and that illegals should not be taking part in marches because they don't have that right, and one dear soul who thought he spotted an illegal Hispanic flying a Communist Chinese flag. (Now that would have been interesting.)

Does not have to end this way. Camp Obama seems to be bending over backwards to encourage a smooth landing.
