West Virginia Results Thread #6

Okay, people still want to talk about West Virginia, so here you go.  With 72% of the vote in, Clinton leads 66%-27%.  Big night for Clinton, but in the end it doesn't matter.  No matter what Karl Rove says, there is only one math.

    tonight as well and was actually much bigger than it was in IN (which was, in turn, bigger than that in PA and OH).

    24% of Clinton's voters in WV were spoilers (they wouldn't vote for her in the general as of now). Only 12% of Obama's vote was spoiler vote. Look at the McCain matchup questions in the exit poll: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/...

    Subtracting the spoiler vote and rescaling (up to 100%), we get:
    HRC: 61%
    BHO: 30.4%
    JRE: 8.6%

    A slightly better looking showing by Obama.

          And even though I swore off cable news also....but I was doing some word in our office and it was on in the background.
          And it didn't depress me at all.
          They said she won WV.
          And then Keith, Tweety, Chuck Todd and Russert spent the ENTIRE night talking about how it made no difference for her.
          Todd kept showing the numbers.
          How she could not overcome them.
          Russert kept saying she could the math was not good.
          Keith did his thing and grilled McCauliff about her hypocrisy in statements she made about MI not couting.
          Huckabee came on and said she could and should stay in for her supporters, but she was not in a postion to win this.
          They talked about Obama being the nominee.
          They talked about Obama's delegate count - how he's wining that. And the pledged dels too.
          And the popular vote. Was his.
          Then they showed her speech.
          They talked about her massive debt a lot.
          Then they went back to - see above.
          Depressing?
          Far from it.
          Not sure what the poster was watching.

          I had the feeling that there may be more that they have seen that they're worried about.  Internal polling, or problems with Rezko or with Jones, who is under investigation.  And Wright will be doing a book tour soon.  So there is a lot of gambling here.

          Same with the Clintons though, but there people can shrug off 'same old' more easily than with someone they don't know much about.

          All who worry about a McCain presidency will understand the hesitancy, even those who don't like Hillary (to put it mildly from what I've read here).

    Taylor Marsh has made herself quite the bed.  She wants to be on the radio and relevant in the blogosphere, but she has painted herself into a corner where her readership is not only pro-Hillary, but virulently, unequivocally anti-Obama.  They simply cannot conceive how he is winning, and thus many simply refuse to believe he is.  The number of posts talking about how she will be sworn in as President are astounding.  Some people there are truly deluded.  

    So that's Marsh's audience now.  She tried to float a trial balloon the other night, after the Indiana and NC debacle, saying, "Hey, look, if--and I'm not saying he will be--but IF Obama is the nominee, it's still important to make sure McCain is defeated."

    And many in her relatively tiny audience were in near revolt, threatening to leave or respectfully disagreeing.  So then she pulled back.

    Now she's trapped there, with them, damned if she do and damned if she don't.  No one will ever give her radio time.  Not with her cuckoo followers.

    It's Heart of Darkness over there, baby.  Don't take that boat up that river.

      is that this puts Hillary in a very strong position to get her supporters over to Obama.  If she bowed and quit on them, they'd be demoralized.  If she stays in and loses, they'll be sad but they'll still have their pride ("She lost, but she gave it all she had.") and their conviction that she was a worthy vessel for their hopes.

      There is a world of difference between quitting and being beat fair and square.  The first leaves a bad taste in your mouth; the second stings, but it makes it possible to switch to the winner in the general.

      Obama's people seem to realize this, and I think HRC's people do too (now that Penn is not driving the bus any longer).  They know an HRC nomination is extremely unlikely, but they want to let her finish strong to save face with her supporters (and she'll need face to get them to switch from her to Obama).  Her speech tonight made a positive case for her and didn't slam Obama, and he didn't slam her either.

      There's a more nuanced, strategic game going on here than some Obamanauts realize.  How about looking at the big picture and starting to shoot at McCain?

                First off, Hillary isn't president.  Therefore, by your own standards, Bill is doing nothing unethical by doing business in Colombia and Dubai.

                Second, you have a very zero-sum mindset of the world: that any law of benefit to these countries would "adversely affect" U.S. taxpayers and citizens.  So tell us, what are these terrible laws in question?  Is it unilateral trade preferences for Colombia and other Andean countries?  Unless you're a derivatives trader, not everything that benefits one person necessarily harms someone else.

                Third, doing business in Colombia and Dubai doesn't necessarily mean doing business with the governments of those countries.  They have private sectors, you know.

                Methinks that your objections have more to do with xenophobia and bashing foreign trade than with anything substantive.  Would you be happier if, for instance, Boeing couldn't sell planes to Avianca or Emirates?  I personally think Dubai is a great place to do business -- without knowing what deals it is you're complaining about specifically -- I'm glad that Bill Clinton recognizes that.

                And finally, you've set the bar so high that presidential spouses can't do much more than sit around and serve tea.  

                Most companies, foreign and domestic, take some stances on legal and regulatory issues, even if they're not actively lobbying.  If it's unethical for a presidential spouse to do business abroad because a foreign government might favor a certain change in U.S. law, surely it's also unethical to do business in this country because a particular company or region might also favor a change in U.S. law

                Suppose Howard Dean had become president.  Should his wife have stopped practicing medicine because a particular drug company -- and lord knows, they do lobby -- might benefit whenever she wrote a prescription?

                Perhaps we should just cloister presidential spouses away in the East Wing and prohibit them from engaging in any professional activities.  (For that matter, you'd have to apply the same standards to the spouses of congressmen who actually pass laws.)  But that strikes me as overly stringent and likely to deter qualified people from seeking the presidency.

                Colin Powell, for example, allegedly refused to run in 1996 because his wife was opposed, and you would expect many more examples of spouses vetoing runs if it meant they had to sacrifice their own careers.  The costs of that move would be steep for very little benefit.  There are much less costly ways of addressing conflicts of interest, when they do arise, such as laws requiring disclosure, Chinese walls, etc.

    *For you young'uns: "Dead Parrot" is a famous Monty Python sketch. Monty Python's Flying Circus was a famous comedy sketch series from England back in the late 60's and early 70's. Search for their stuff on YouTube, it's all over the place.

  as the woman who is having a big night in WV not realizing that the rest of the country has moved on.  They basically said on the air that she seems to be the only person who thinks her win in WV matters.  Ouch.  She was the media darling here just a couple of months ago.  Even NYC is having Clinton fatigue.  She's like the crazy drunk who won't leave the party at 4am after everyone else has left and has to be carried out kicking and screaming and pulling down the drapes...

    It says though, that 7% are so intolerant they couldn't bring themselves to choose between the white woman and the black man -- so they voted for the white guy who isn't even running any more. At least, you'd have to say that's why some voted that way. Some may have been real Edwards supporters, or just frustrated with the tone of the campaign, or innocently disenchanted with the choice.
