I can now start planning my wedding

As i'm sure most of you have heard by now, California Supreme Court has overruled the ban on gay marriage. So the entire lgbt community is doing our little victory dance. Of course we know it's just the beginning of a LONG uphill war to KEEP decision in play come November, but for right now, we are relishing the moment.

And I am making wedding plans.

Okay. Not at this very second. lol.

Just yesterday I posted a diary about how Hillary and Barack are ruining my relationship (semi-snark), so if we are so angry at each other for voting for who we voted for (I choose Obama, she chooses the other one), then maybe we should take baby steps towards an actual wedding. BUT I am very, very ecstatic to actually have the legal right to marry her when we see fit.

This won't be a long diary at all and some may feel it should be deleted. But I'm just a little overwhelmed with happiness, gratitude and such a sense of accomplishment right now that I had to post something. Those who don't know how it feels to have laws prohibit you from making that committment with someone you are passionately and genuinely in love with, you should count yourself as blessed. I feel equally as blessed now experiencing what it feels like to be on the other side. I can marry her. She can marry me. We can have protection and rights and mandates and SECURITY. Security. Something we all strive for. Today, in California, I feel as if I can now obtain it.

    We're doing it 08/08/08... I'd highly recommend the date. Not only is it cool, but according to all our asian friends, it's highly auspicious and bountiful.

  and I did a little happy dance when I heard it as well. My aunt and her partner (together for 32 years) have a second house in CA. I wonder, and they are there now (her father is sick) if they might not come back married. That would be a fulfillment of a dream they've had for a very, very long time. Plus one of them is not in the best of health, so something needs to happen sooner rather than later for a number of reasons.

  Mildred Loving, the black woman, married to a white man, who sued to get married in VA when it was illegal.  She said the same thing you are saying:  no one should be permitted to keep you from marrying someone you love.  And she felt that way about gay folks, too.

  This is going be a real boost to the economy in California.  Everyone is going to be planning weddings now.  People will be coming in from other states just to have their nuptials here.  In catering alone this could be millions.

  Hey, take your tax rebate checks, come to California and use them for your wedding.  Something karmic about that.

  And if I can offer some advice as an old married, it's not necessarily important that you vote for the same candidates, it's important that you're both making your decisions from a shared set of values.  You can share the same values and come to different conclusions, but it's the shared values that sustain you.
