House and Senate Roundup: Everything's Coming Up Democrat

Fri May 16, 2008 at 02:10:06 PM PDT

NM-Sen: As mcjoan wrote earlier, Democrat Tom Udall is kicking all kinds of ass in the Senate race. He has a monster lead, 25+ points, over both his Republican opponents, Heather "Nipplegate" Wilson and Steve Pearce.

Udall started the race with a wide lead, and as the race has carried on, it has only expanded. Pearce, and especially Wilson, were considered formidable opponents before the race began, but it is currently looking like a potential blowout reminiscent of Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar's crushing victory over Mark Kennedy in 2006.

Best of all, Pearce leads Wilson in the GOP primary. Pearce is the further-right candidate, so he cedes "moderate" ground to Udall. It's a bad break for Wilson, but look on the bright side; she'll have plenty of time to devote to keeping the airwaves safe from loose nipples.

ME-Sen: More splendid news; Democratic Rep. Tom Allen is slowly, but surely closing the gap in his Senate race against Susan Collins. The latest Rasmussen numbers:

Rasmussen. April numbers in parentheses.

Collins (R) 52 (54)
Allen  (D) 42 (38)

Collins is one of the most popular Senators in the country, due to her "moderate" image. She represents the only hope for GOP candidates in the fall; to win by distancing themselves as much as possible from the national party. And even so, Allen is steadily gaining on her, and is within 10 points with plenty of race to go.

Say it with me; everything's coming up Democrat!

KS-Sen: And now for the most shocking poll of all, another Rasmussen poll: Incumbent Senator Pat Roberts leads Democratic challenger Jim Slattery by only 12 points. This is in a state where no Democrat has been elected to the Senate since (wait for it) 1932, and against a challenger who hasn't run for office since 1994.

Rasmussen. 5/13. MoE +/- 4%

Roberts (R) 52
Slattery  (D) 40

There's a long way to go before November, and Slattery's already competitive. Having entered the race late, Slattery has yet to begin campaigning in earnest, though his fundraising is going very well. Roberts enjoys 60% approval according to the Rasmussen poll, and yet manages just 52% against Slattery.

These Rasmussen polls are just shocking.

WA-Gov: Rasmussen has one last piece of beautiful news: Washington's Democratic Governor Christine Gregoire, who won a narrow (and hotly contested) victory over Republican Dino Rossi in 2004, has opened up a double-digit lead in their rematch:

Rasmussen.5/12. MoE +/- 4%. 3/27 numbers in parentheses.

Gregoire (D) 52 (47)
Rossi  (R) 41 (46)

That lead has gone from one point to 11 points in less than two months. Obama also enjoys a double-digit lead over McCain in the state.

NJ-Sen: Rep. Rob Andrews stands alone among New Jersey's Democratic establishment in thinking he'd make a better senator than incumbent Frank R. Lautenberg.

Andrews' colleague Frank Pallone has some particularly harsh words for him:

Seven members of Congress and the mayor of Trenton spoke at the press conference at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) headquarters, reaffirming their support for Lautenberg and repeating charges that Andrews touts the GOP line and therefore, is wrong for New Jersey.

"On too many occasions he (Andrews) sided with Bush and the Republicans," Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. of the 6th District said, later adding that he "often wondered" that if New Jersey didn’t lean Democratic, whether Andrews would change his party affiliation.

Meanwhile, Lautenberg's colleague Robert Menendez has the highest praise for him:

Menendez said Lautenberg has "taken on" special interests, opposed the war in Iraq, and voted in support of his own beliefs even when they weren’t politically popular.

"New Jersey needs a proven, effective progressive Democrat who consistently stands up to the Bush Republicans," Menendez said. "That Senator is Frank Lautenberg."

Here's a note to Andrews; it is pure folly to try and wage a primary challenge from the right, in a blue state, during a year which marks a Democratic ascendancy as this one does.

House Races

TN-09: Things look very bright for progressive Democratic incumbent Steve Cohen, as he has a 52-point lead over primary challenger Nikki Tinker.

Seems like there's something to be said for going to Washington and doing right by your district. Who knew?

KS-02: More primary polling here, as Republican Jim Ryun, legendary track star and former right-wing Representative, faces off against the moderate GOP candidate, former Kansas Treasurer Leeroy Lynn Jenkins.

Ryun not only has a huge 44-point lead, but his lead has actually expanded in the last year, despite Jenkins being fairly well-known in the district. I guess Jenkins is trying to keep her powder dry, but it may be time for her to start trying to take down Ryun.

Because incumbent Democratic Rep. Nancy Boyda defeated Ryun once already, and because Ryun, as the far-right candidate, presents the starkest contrast between himself and Boyda, I think it's probably best for us that Ryun win this primary. This is a tough district and Boyda will have a fight on her hands either way, but I certainly won't cry if Ryun emerges as the candidate.

KS-04: Alex Parker of the MTV Street Team has put together a nifty video featuring 30-year-old State Senator Donald Betts, now running for the U.S. House against incumbent Todd Tiahrt. Check it out.

As a state senator, Betts already has a considerable base of political support in Wichita. It's a decidedly uphill race for Betts against Tiahrt in a strongly Republican district, but the race is not hopeless; both Governor Kathleen Sebelius and former Democratic Attorney General Paul Morrison won the district in 2006.

IN-02: Businessman Luke Puckett, though backed by the NRCC, had quite a bit of trouble winning his primary...against a man who spoke at a neo-Nazi meeting earlier this year.

'04/'06 candidate Tony Zirkle (R) said he's "willing to talk to any group that invites him," and that's why he spoke to a weekend gathering in Chicago of the Amer. National Socialist Workers Party. The "occasion was a celebration" of the 119th anniversary of the birth of Adolf Hitler. Zirkle stood at a podium "in front of a larger-than-life portrait" of Hitler, "flanked" by an American flag and a Nazi flag.

During a 4/21 presser, Zirkle said he accepted the invitation to "spread his anti-pornography message." He said he's "misunderstood," and that his "real mission" is to "rid the country of pornography." To "punctuate his message," Zirkle "shredded an original copy" of a '69 Penthouse magazine.

But an "account of the gathering" says "Zirkle spoke on his history" as a state's atty in IN, "prosecuting Jewish and Zionist criminal gangs involved in trafficking prostitutes and pornography" from Russia.

Puckett lost to this Zirkle fellow in 5 of the district's 12 counties. Anyone want to take bets on how he performs against Democratic incumbent Joe Donnelly?

Funny how he happened to just have a copy of Penthouse from 1969 available for his little speech.  I mean, if he had the current issue, I'd assume he picked it up at a 7/11 on the way to the speech with the intention of using it as a prop - but an original from 1969?  That takes a little more effort to find.

Let's just say I bet he keeps a lot of vintage pornography at hand for, um, research into the Zionist porno-conspiracy.  Yeah, that's it.

I'm well aware of the right's misuse of the word "Democrat," but a lot of people around here are trying to overcompensate. "Democrat" is a noun; "Democratic" is an adjective. Brownsox is using it correctly as a noun.

I think Holt wants it, but he's too much of a gentleman to say anything gauche.  Either Pallone or Holt would be much better than Andrews.  Andrews is probably trying to jump the gun because he knows that if he has to run against Holt or Pallone in a primary, he would lose.  Given that Rush Holt has a Ph.D. in physics and chair of intelligence oversight in the House, he could end up as CIA director under a Democratic President.  Pallone is a political genius and has managed to accomplish things that would seem impossible in NJ, such as getting great positive coverage on the otherwise right wing talk radio station.

          •  Andres is anglign for Governor (0+ / 0-)

Sure, he wanted the Senate seat. And if his putsch with Ray Lesniak, Camden kingpin Norcross, and Bergen Boss Ferriero had come together the way they planned, he'd have had a shot. But right now, Andrews wants as much exposure in the New York media market part of the sate as possible, so he can be next in line for Governor. New Jersey will also elect a Lieutenant Governor for the first time (at leas the first time under the 1947 constitution) next year, so if Corzine is still around (as opposed to in the Obama Administration) and is too popular to primary (not a given) then Andrews would be logical choice for that, unless he has too many people utterly furious with him.

There are parallels between Clinton's position nationally and Andrews' in New Jersey. In ideology, in ambition, and in a possible deficit of goodwill.

I think he's a hawkish asshole, personally.  His vote for the Military Commissions Act in 2006 was the last straw for me -- he was running completely unopposed (the GOP didn't even put a sacrificial lamb on the ballot) and he still voted for torture and against habeas corpus.  That's totally, unforgivably unacceptable to me.

When talking about the NJ Senate race: The 2006 HI Senate race. That race pitted Democrat-lite Congressman Ed Case againist the longtime incumbent Daniel Akaka. In this race Case's campaign was based on age, Case made the point that  Akaka was too old to be in the Senate and it was time for a fresh change. Akaka won by a comfortable margin. These races are both the same because both Case and Andrews challenged the incumbents because of age and both of them are spineless Democrat-lite Congressmen.

The one good thing that came out of the HI race was Case is gone and was replaced by a more liberal Democrat in Mazie Hirono.

  •  Larry LaRocco and Walt Minnick in Idaho (5+ / 0-)

Senate candidate LaRocco has been hitting presumptive opponent Jim Risch (caught in an eight-way GOP primary May 27) hard for weeks now, making hay with everything from Risch's lack of military credibility to his refusal to debate his GOP foes to Risch's willingness to let Idaho be a dumping ground for hazardous waste from Kuwait.

Then there's Walt Minnick, facing Bill Sali in the ID-01, waiting to finish what Larry Grant started four years ago. Minnick did a great event at a Boise service station last week where he paid the buck-something difference per gallon for what we paid for gas when Sali took office. Kind of gimmicky, but it got him great attention. Sali's bigger worries are his inability to raise money and a lingering pile o' debt from 2006 that's put him on cash-only basis with his main creditor.

Add in Obama coattails, and either or both of these are possible pick-ups. In 2008, even in freaking Idaho, at least some things will come up Democratic.

9 is the magic number for a fillibuster proof majority and I think we have a legit shot at getting there.

The following six I'm pretty confident about..
    Pickups
Virginia- The PA of 2008. Basically looks like a guranteed pickup at this early stage.

New Mexico- The latest polling makes it look as hopeless as Virginia for the GOP

New Hampshire- Shaheen will take down Sunnunu this time around.

Colorado- CO will send another Udall to the Senate.

Alaska- Begich is the best candidate on our bench and unlike fellow corrupt Republican Don Young, it doesn't look like Stevens will draw a credible challanger.

Oregon- Merkeley's starting to finally look viable and has a great chance at taking down Smith.
    ________________________
The three longshots that could very easily go our way:

Oklahoma- Andrew Rice is an exceptional candidate who's running a strong campaign. Oklahomans are sick and tired of Inhofe.

Texas- Noriega runs up huge turnout in Texas' urban centers to knock off Cornyn.

North Carolina- Kay Hagan might be the biggest surprise thus far. She's running a very strong campaign and Dole is not that popular. Hagan's in a great position to send the carpetbagger packin'

I watched the debates between Healther Wilson and Patricia Madrid in the 2006 Congressional race, and Wilson came across as extremely self righteous.  I wish Madrid had called her on it right there and then and asked her why she has the need to put on airs as if she is better than everyone else.

"only" a 12-point lead?? How many times have we overcome a margin greater than 10 points (barring a meltdown)? A 12-point lead isn't "only". It is a comfortable, fairly decisive margin. Call me when you are down to 6 points. That's when a race gets competitive.

Things look good for the fall, but we still have a lot of work to do to purge the evildoers.

Dems would be winning if they were going after Bushco on the central, over-riding,  hearts and minds issue of our time, instead of giving them a cushy free pass.

Enron malfeasance?  Off the table.  Long forgotten.

Bushco crimes against national and international law?  Off the table.

Bushco war crimes and crimes against humanity?  Off the table.

Single payer health care?  Off the table.

    A real defense against Bushco's dumbass anti-science, anti-intellectualism?

Off the table.  Don't wanna make anyone feel bad.  Even the willfully, politically ignorant.

A foreign policy, which to what extent not driven by corporatist croneyism and militarist demagoguery is driven by Christian Zionist armegeddon nutcasery?

All have been talked about as "safe seats."

And whoever mouths that phrase needs to be reminded: Howard Dean is the Chairman of the Democratic Party, and he led the party to retake Congress in 2006 with something called "the 50-state strategy." What does that mean? It means that anyone talking about "safe seats" is stuck in pre-2006 politics, and they need to be moved aside.

The 50-state strategy can't be discarded now that the Democrats control Congress. We have an opportunity, this year, to win 22 Senate seats, and we can't allow the likes of Roberts and Graham to get a pass with a "safe seat" strategy.

Graham conspired with two other Senators, and the Republican Senate leadership, and the Bush Administration, to DEFRAUD the Supreme Court in a case that challenged WAR CRIMES instituted as policy(Hamdan).

Roberts aided and abetted a conspiracy to commit TREASON: The Plame case. In addition to that, Roberts stonewalled and slow-footed an investigation of the Bush Administration to determine whether they committed the Crime Against Peace, a war crime for which the Nazi High Command was HANGED.

That investigation is over now. Now we have the facts. The Bush Administration did indeed adopt a policy of pre-emptive warfare, and then fabricated pretexts for war with Iraq, and then illegally seized power, invaded Iraq, occupied Iraq, looted Iraq, and set up torture prisons to terrorize and murder the population. That IS the Crime Against Peace.

Senator Roberts was a gatekeeper for the war criminals and traitors, keeping information from his fellow Senators, and plotting with fascist traitors to overthrow the rule of law and institute Nazi war crimes as the policy of the United States.

Let us defeat this vile criminal at the polls by telling the truth to the public about his role in these crimes. It will save Kansas some money, since this fascist conspirator will certainly meet his day of reckoning, whether he is re-elected or not, and Kansas will have to hold another election to replace him after he is arrested, if he wins re-election. It's better if he is first rejected by the electorate, and then arrested.

Sessions has rubber-stamped every criminal, fascist over-reach by the Bush Administration. Nuff said.

I met Jim Ryun at an Olympic event in NYC in 1984. I was talking to him about running (I ran track, and my best friend won the mile at our county championship) and what advice he had. Ryun started on a proslytizing binge about how I should devote my life to Jesus. When I told him that I was Jewish, he told me that I should convert.
