please GET REAL here.
SHAME ON CONGRESS-- you know, the guys who are supposed to represent US?
Clue: the Arab Oil Embargo was in 1973... do the math, that is over thirty years ago.
On October 16, 1973, OPEC cut production of oil and placed an embargo on shipments of crude oil to the West, with the United States and the Netherlands specifically targeted. The Netherlands had supplied arms to Israel and allowed the Americans to use Dutch airfields for supply runs to Israel. Also imposed was a boycott of Israel and price increases. Since oil demand falls little with price rises, prices had to rise dramatically to reduce demand to the new lower level of supply. Anticipating this, the market price for oil immediately rose substantially. A world financial system already under pressure from the breakdown of the Bretton Woods agreement was set on a path of a series of recessions and high inflation that persisted until the early 1980s, and elevated oil prices persisted until 1986.
Is there some reason(s) Congress HAS NOT helped prepare our country for the inevitable burn out of fossil fuels?
yes, there are several reasons why, but apparently most people here don't get it-- or don't care to.
this is one case where ignorance is not bliss.

read your U.S. History, please.
early on, companies wishing to do Business in the United States had to be chartered.
For 100 years after the American Revolution, legislators maintained tight control of the corporate chartering process. Because of widespread public opposition, early legislators granted very few corporate charters, and only after debate. Citizens governed corporations by detailing operating conditions not just in charters but also in state constitutions and state laws. Incorporated businesses were prohibited from taking any action that legislators did not specifically allow.
Now of course the reverse is true-- corporations are running the U.S. government thru their paid lackeys, i.e. congresspeople and lobbyists.
you can see where this has led us.
the chartering system was infinitely better than the bullshit corrupt system we have now.

by eroded47095 on Sun May 18, 2008 at 08:01:21 PM PDT
My view on the current price of oil is that it mostly is a reflection of GW's really pathetic foreign policy. Oil is a commodity traded in dollars, as the value of the dollar falls the price of oil goes up(samme thing with food commodities by the way) Now why is the dollar tanking at the moment. The budget defficits are moving this process along nicely. Deficits tied directly to the war and irresponsible tax cuts. Oil is also affected by worries over supply distribution. Explosions in Iraq can't be good for this. Not to mention Venezulea and Russia flexing their political muscle often in oppositon to 'Dummy'. And then there is increased demand which we really should have seen coming. So 2 out of three casues for the rise in the price of oil can be laid at the feet of the incompetent in chief. There are of course many more variables to this, but these are the big 3 in my mind

I have been using Biobags since they came out. They are a little expensive but well worth it.

I wanted to tell you about my sister’s experience in Houston during a caucas in Spring, texas. She totally believes Bambi is the antichrist. She told me that she could feel evil when she walked thru the door at the elementary school she was voting in. She said it was feeling she could actually smell. I thought she was a little off, so we have never spoke about it again. My sister is very religious and practices the Jewish religion. She tells me she will not vote for Hillary unless O is not anywhere on the ticket because of what she felt at that caucas! There are alot of people that say he fits the mole exactly. I not one of those, I just believe he is somehow connected to the jihadists and will try to take this country over from the inside.

by ipsos on Sun May 18, 2008 at 06:55:37 PM PDT
Yes, I see the double negative I missed before and that's even more sickening. You find this funny? How? Are Obama's issues courting Jewish voters are amusing to you? And your response is to post a joke perpetuating the kinds of stereotypes resulting that problem.
The quoted comment doesn't use the word "anti-Christ", you did. Incarnation of evil ≠ anti-Crist. So according to a person on the internet, someone who happens to be Jewish said this? Why repeat it?
by Futuristic Dreamer on Sun May 18, 2008 at 07:17:33 PM PDT

by Lava20 on Sun May 18, 2008 at 07:27:54 PM PDT
made fun of, and yes, this is one. The quote is bullshit written by a troll on their site with the intention of mocking Jews.
I am appalled at the level of antisemitism that's been dragged up in this campaign; in all likelihood it's being done intentionally by the Republicans as a tool to divide Democrats. That is a big part of what's behind the smear E-mails — they are a plot to embarrass the Jewish community at Obama's expense. This election can bring the Black & Jewish communities together or tear them further apart, and it's little things, offhand comments, that build trust and destroy it.
by Futuristic Dreamer on Sun May 18, 2008 at 08:10:16 PM PDT

If you're really amused by internet idiocy, check out fixedearth.com, now there's a laugh. If you can imagine it, it's on the internet.
The only reason to repeat bullshit is because it was said by a person in power who should be held accountable for their words, if it tells us something meaningful about other's philosophy, and/or if it's good for a laugh. If this was meant to be funny, it's a mockery of Jews, and that's not cool, nor does tell us anything meaningful about another's philosophy, and it's anonymous. Why repost that?
Worst Bullshit I've found on the Internet so far: Most Absurd: "Heliocentrism is an Atheist Doctrine", "The Jewish bankers' conspiracy blew up the WTC with explosives.", & "Global warming can't be real because CO2 floats off into space." Most Digesting: "We should nuke Berlin now, because 5 secret Nazis are plotting to attack Israel, and God wants us to." — Posted by a self identified Christian Zionist who was kicked out of Israel because the IDF caught him associating with the people who killed Rabin, and suspected his involvement in a terrorist plot to blow up a mosque.
by Futuristic Dreamer on Sun May 18, 2008 at 10:45:39 PM PDT
Your comment looks a lot different after a decent night's sleep.
I still think the comment is tasteless, but you have every right to post it. I'm pretty hesitant to un-HR something after it has a bunch of recs, because then it makes a dumb comment look like the best comment ever.
It's hard to tell what's a joke, and what's not, after reading about stuff like this all day. I wish that was the Onion, but it isn't. People get physically hurt, and even killed over lies about Jews that don't make much more sense. If that kind of bullshit was confined to Hillaryis44, we would live in a much better world.
I did reread the comment before I hr'ed it, and every time I re-read it I came up with a new offensive interruption — I was tired, out of it, and had seen way too much bullshit for one day. None of which is your fault, so I owe you an apology.

you are better off with an open venue such a big thoroughfare or an airfield, in south america they get 1M-2.5M people that way pretty much in every election, I saw one a few years ago in Caracas where they shut down a 10 lane highway (like I95) for 5 miles new year's eve from 8pm to 3am for a political rally against Chavez about 1.2M, yup they were there for the new year.

Hot off the press, the latest Obama swift boat routine from the religious right that is making the e-mail rounds of the usual suspects (even Mrs. Toes called this stuff shit which is totally out of character for her):
Subject: Obama
Something to think about !!!
MAY WE ALL PRAY FOR WISDOM AND DISCERNMENT AND PRAY FOR EACH OTHER AS WE MAKE THIS DECISION OF A LIFETIME! OUR LIVES, CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN'S LIVES WILL BE CHANGED FOREVER BECAUSE OF OUR CHOICE THIS ELECTION. MAY GOD BE WITH US ALL!
Keep your eyes on the skies, Jesus is coming soon!!!
God help us if this man is elected!! But it is all stated in the Bible and it will happen sooner or later.
This is from Darlene Millican, wife of the pastor of Trinity Bapt. Church here in Sun City .
I have felt for sometime now that Obama is the one person that 'Frightens Me'. I believe the Bible has warned us that 'A man will come from the East that will be charismatic in nature and have proposed solutions for all our problems and his rhetoric will attract many supporters!'
When will our pathetic Nation quit turning their back on God and understand that this man is 'A Muslim'....First, Last and always....and we are AT WAR with the Muslim Nation, whether our bleeding-heart, secular, Liberal friends believe it or not. This man fits every description from the Bible of the 'Anti-Christ'!
I'm just glad to know that there are others that are frightened by this man!
Who is Barack Obama?
Very interesting and something that should be considered in your choice.
If you do not ever forward anything else, please forward this to all your contacts...this is very scary to think of what lies ahead of us here in our own United States...better heed this and pray about it and share it.
snopes.com <http://snopes.com>' confirms this is factual. Check for yourself.
Probable U. S. presidential candidate, Barack Hussein Obam a was born in Honolulu , Hawaii , to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., a black MUSLIM from Nyangoma-Kogel, Kenya and Ann Dunham, a white ATHEIST from Wichita , Kansas
Obama's parents met at the University of Hawaii . When Obama was two years old, his parents divorced. His father returned to Kenya . His mother then married Lolo Soetoro, a RADICAL Muslim from Indonesia . When Obama was 6 years old, the family relocate to Indonesia . Obama attended a MUSLIM school in Jakarta . He also spent two years in a Catholic school.
Obama takes great care to conceal the fact that he is a Muslim . He is quick to point out that, 'He was once a Muslim, but that he also attended Catholic school.'
Obama's political handlers are attempting to make it appear that that he is not a radical.
Obama's introduction to Islam came via his father, and that this influence was temporary at best. In reality, the senior Obama returned to Kenya soon after the divorce, and never again had any direct influence over his son's education.
Lolo Soetoro, the second husband of Obama's mother, Ann Dunham, introduced his stepson to Islam. Obamawas enrolled in a Wahabi school in Jakarta.
Wahabism is the RADICAL teaching that is followed by the Muslim terrorists who are now waging Jihad against the western world. Since it is politically expedient to be a CHRISTIAN when seeking major public office in the United Sta tes , Barack Hussein Obama has joined the United Church of Christ in an attempt to downplay his Muslim background. ALSO, keep in mind that when he was sworn into office he DID NOT use the Holy Bible, but instead the Koran. Barack Hussein Obama will NOT recite the Pledge of Allegiance nor will he show any reverence for our flag. While others place their hands over their hearts, Obama turns his back to the flag and slouches. Do you want someone like this as your PRESIDENT?
Let us all remain alert concerning Obama's expected presidential candidacy.
The Muslims have said they plan on destroying the US from the inside out, what better way to start than at the highest level - through the President of the United States, one of their own! The Bible says 'He will come from among you!'
Please forward to everyone you know.
Would you want this man leading our country?
NOT ME!!!
I've said it before and I'll say it again, This man was planted here to destroy our country....One of the 911 terrorists lived in Vero Beach for 16 years and was president of his childrens PTA for many of those years before being called up to fulfill his duty to those that made it possible for him to be here....Read the book The Lions Game by Nelson DeMille and get a little more insight on the mentality of the Middle Eastern Mind......Pass this on to as many people as you know before those people are removed from your life by a Muslum Terrorist elected to the office of United States President.......
As I sail against the tide, for what I believe is right.

all but eliminate Federal funding for mental health programs?
Toes, there are plenty of non-profit mental health facilities that take severely mentally ill patients, even those with severe learning disabilities, on a pro bono or pay-as-you-can basis.
The rampant mental illness in this country is truly sad.

I missed the first sentence or two, it scrolled above the top of my screen, and the beginning of the email was at the top of the screen. Grr, I'm so sorry to snark you, rather than the email sender.
Ignore the middle para of my comment. Sorry. :(

I was wondering about the mental health angle myself when I read this the first time.
by Toes on Sun May 18, 2008 at 07:19:39 PM PDT
Yeah, if you read it starting right after your introduction, exactly as you read it when you got it in email, it's hard not to think the sender needs some pretty serious help.
I guess there are two options:
I'd like to think that, as my son would say, there's a Visine for that. But I don't think so.
