Associated Press Continues To Carry McCain's Water

Once again the Associated Press is helping with John McCain's efforts to lessen the impact of his saying he's fine with staying in Iraq for 100 years.  The lede in today's article

Republican John McCain defended himself Friday against television ads that accuse him of advocating a 100-year war in Iraq.

The ad accuses him of nothing.  It simply uses his own words against a backdrop of the cost of this war.  

Instead of taking stenography from the McCain campaign, the Associated Press should try watching the ad.

  Sorry guys - I know this comment is off-topic, but it's Friday, and I'VE ALREADY POSTED A DIARY TODAY, SO CAN'T POST THIS MYSELF.  But I wanted to get it out there for the netroots to dig in on.  I haven't seen a diary today jumping in on this yet, but I feel it needs to get out there, and time is running out.

  Basically, the story here is that Clinton has been running around Indiana decrying the shutting down of a company called Magnaquench, which was sold to China.  All those jobs are over there now, and Clinton is campaigning on changing this kind of wholesale loss of jobs to other countries.

  Problem is, her husband's administration seems to have endorsed and/or facilitated the sale.

  Per ABC News:

  What Clinton doesn't tell voters is that Magnequench was originally sold to Chinese interests during her husband's administration, which okayed the move despite concerns about national security and eventual job loss. Experts say the Chinese acquired the "technical sophistication" that created the magnets long before George W. Bush took office.

  if we're going to be indignant when we're not granted it by the right or by the media, we should attempt to practice it ourselves. There is a significant difference between a war and an occupation. Don't get me wrong: I don't believe a 100-year occupation is possible, and I believe McCain's "100 years of no casualties" is a pipe dream: there would be constant attacks. So McCain's bogus logic aside, it IS intellectually honest to admit that the ad casts McCain as in favor a war and not an occupation, whereas McCain favors an occupation. AP is not Fox News-ing this data.

        Candidates unfortunately have to have a sound bite mindset, especially these days, so Kerry made a mistake when he said that because of how it would sound when replayed (regardless of context), and he paid dearly for it.   But it was a mistake.   Is it an error for which presidents should be rejected?   Hell, no.  It's pure 24/7 cable cycle loss of forest for the trees b.s.  But I think we have to play the game if the other side is playing it, and they sure as hell are and will be.  So we have to go into the mines -- and they are dirty, dusty and dangerous -- and see if we can come up with a few gems.  This McSame gaffe is one of 'em; so is "Bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb Iran".  This doesn't rise to anywhere near the level of Willie Horton, but you know that'll come when BO is the nominee. So, let's put these Rethugs on the defensive, and let's keep BO on private financing, until McSame and his 527 supporters cry uncle.

  but I don't think we should pound the "100 years" aspect of his comments.  Hear me out.
  I think that he constant repetition of this line makes it LOOK like demagougery of an out of context line.  It wears out the meaning of it until it looses its power.  I think we need to show more comprehensively that McCain is the openended continuation of failed Bush policy and logic.  "100 years" only has so much shelf life without some flesh.  Just MHO.

    Brain science indicates that even the most obvious, the already successful need to be repeated, to be reinforced by the right kind of messages in the right venues. For example, Coca-Cola doesn't need ads to sell the product, only to keep reminding people that it is popular.

  Clearly he's not being taken out of context.

  Add them up. McCain will be a war president.

  A vote for McCain isn't just a vote for 4 more years of Iraq. It's for nearly 4 years in Iran.

  Though a certain democrat may attack Iran also given that candidate's recent bellowing. (Hint the dem has boobs).

  Listen, I can't stand this guy but apparently he said after the "100 year" statement, to the effect, "as long as American lives are not lost..." Now that might sound bogus or against all laws of logic or probability to us- but - isn't he placing a contingency on his '100 year' support? Isn't that what his handlers gripe is?

    McCain supports endless war.  Period.

    With or without without maiming of American troops, McCain is unconditionally committed to an indefinite occupation.  The ad is a precise encapsulation of the McCain agenda regardless of whether it is missing an extra word or two.  The public has a right to know McCain's intentions and this ad is spot on in showing what a warmonger the guy is.  I think they should make an ad of McCain singing about bombing Iran in his own words.

  The headline:

  Resilience! As in, the economy only lost 20,000 jobs last month instead of the 80,000 it lost the previous month. It's kickin' ass!

  Let's not bring up the fact that the economy must add 150,000 or so jobs per month to keep up with population growth.

•  Iraqi Constitution & Islam

  Maybe McCain thinks it'll take 100 years to get the Islamic Republic of Iraq established. The Iraqi constitution establishes Islam as the official state religion. Section 1, Article 2 states:

  First: Islam is the official religion of the State and it is a fundamental source of legislation:
  A. No law that contradicts the established provisions of Islam may be established.

  Section 2, Article 30 of the Iraqi constitution provides:

  The state guarantee to the individual and the family -- especially children and women -- social and health security and the basic requirements for leading a free and dignified life. The state also ensures the above a suitable income and appropriate housing.

  So, McCain's willing to support the establishment of an Islamic state and evidently have American taxpayers pay for what appears to be government-funded single-payor health insurance as well as guarantee jobs with suitable income and appropriate housing.

  That's sounds something like a living family wage and some kind of mortgage bailout or government-provided housing--all at the American taxpayer's expense.

  But McCain's not willing to provide Americans with similar coverage. Yet he wants Americans to pay to provide such coverage to Iraqis for the next 100 years or so.

  but it still shows how tactless he's being. We had forces in Japan and Korea long after we actively engaged in warfare, he's referring to that kind of presence for 100 years. Still, McCain is really dumb for nonchalantly suggesting any kind of forces for this long: people don't want to hear it and it makes him look bad. With as much "experience" as he has, he should know that most Americans would look into the details of politicians words: they'll take them at what they appear to say.
