Already broken: the news of the day...so, uh, never mind?

Tue May 20, 2008 at 11:04:30 AM PDT

(edited: original title was "Broken! Ted kenne....oh never mind...", which was intended as a comment, as I thought I pointed out below, about how we all rush to share the news of the day with our fellow DKos types....but as commenters have pointed out, it comes off as insensitive. I'm the son of a melanoma survivor, so believe me, mocking Kennedy was not my intent. Maybe if i'd put "Broken! Ted Kennedy has canc...oh, never mind" it would have worked better....but maybe not. In some people's minds, I am now the a-hole who made fun of Ted Kennedy's cancer. Furthest from the truth, but....so goes the internet. Took TK's name out of the title...)

In a snarky mood today in general, the last day of the 32nd year of my life....wait, how does that work again? Actually, it is the last day of my 33rd year of life....but it's besides the point, so never mind. But then again I don't really have a point, other than to point out the sense of community engendered by DKos wherein we hear a bit of news, whether it be cool or tragic, as in today's word of Senator Ted Kennedy's brain tumor (a PSA, just in case you missed the other, oh, probably 8 diaries by now that have mentioned it), and we want to share it, and the first thought is to check in on this site and post the news.

We're here because of our shared politics. But once we arrived, we became a part of something bigger (oh no! sappy alert!), a community where we can share our personal tales of growth, of loss, of change. I felt sad to read of Devilstower's loss this morning, and somehow honored that he shared that intensely personal story with us. The same thing happens on a semi-regular basis, whether a tale of the havoc wrought by depression, or a heartfelt paean to a dearly departed pet.

I don't know any of you, yet I'm enriched by your collective wit and wisdom. So, for that if nothing else, thanks. For making me care, and have to spend time every freakin' day on here to catch up to what you might have to say....not so much (oooh, nice comeback by snark, giving him the upper hand on sappy once again!)

Truth be told, I just needed to post another diary because the last one I did had to do with Rush Limbaugh, and I needed to get drug addled gasbag's name off the top of my personal page. I'm just sucking up to you because...well, because I care about you guys in the abstract, as well as in terms of the personal stories. After all, it's us, the relatively young, liberal and progressive brethren (and sisthren? Is that a word) that will hopefully be shaping this country and the world for a generation (and more!) to come, and I'm glad to have a chance to be a part of it....

Gratuitous pole below (from a place I've actually been! Qutub Minar near New Delhi, India)
