IL-10: Kirk (R) admits to being out of touch with his district

Wed May 21, 2008 at 11:45:25 AM PDT

Archpundit has a recording from Rep. Mark Kirk:

In the last two months I think we’ve seen Barack Obama has unified the Kerry-Dukakis Coalition.
I think we hit Republican bottom in 2006 and I don’t know about you, but I feel stronger now.  I feel that the country was pretty shocked by what they saw about Senator Obama lately.  Our job is to move the focus beyond just him to other things the Democratic Party stands for.

I hope you begin to decide to work on Election Day. This will be a huge one. Dan Seals will have millions of dollars from Washington coming in, wants to join up with Nancy Pelosi, wants to back the Obama agenda.

Kirk is one of the few Republican House members to represent a House district that John Kerry won in 2004. One of six, to be exact. And despite representing a district that Kerry won 53-47, despite representing an Illinois district, the home state of our nominee, Kirk is going around talking about opposing the "Obama agenda" and Nancy Pelosi.

It's an interesting tactic in another way -- Kirk has survived by pretending to be a moderate. Yet as this recording shows, he's a wingnut at heart, and he's clearly out of touch with a district that will overwhelmingly support Obama this fall.

Dan Seals is going to win this seat.

Update: It wasn't clear, but I don't think this was meant for public consumption. In fact, it sounds like something you'd say at a Republican fundraiser. No way in hell he says this sort of thing publicly. But it got out.

back in his District. There are a lot of independents and Republican crossover voters in IL-10 who dislike this style of negative campaigning.  It's an educated and affluent area and Kos is absolutely right, Kirk has survived by falsely representing himself as the consummate moderate.

Shedding that disguise now is really interesting.  Maybe he's looking at huge Obama favorite son coattails for Seals in the fall and is now setting the table for a run at Governor.  Blago is doomed. (Lisa) Madigan v. Kirk? Interesting.

but I suspect that rezko goes down, and then, our  governor will be in serious trouble.

That is the only fear I have about November. Some democrats need to call for his stepping aside, even if Rezko skates. Ill in noisyans don't mind a certain low level of corruption (hell, if we did, none of the current office holders in state, county or city office would be there) but when it makes national headlines, even our crusty, cynical, souls demand change.

Many democrats can easily elevate their stars and positions by calling for bloggo to go-go.

Madigan v. Kirk? Could be. The GOP side is rather sparse these days.

Either way re Rezko trial, I think Blago has been  very damaged. Madigan would be a shoe in v Kirk if Blago steps aside but it positions him as leader for a future run. In the meantime he can build the war chest in the private sector.

I was at a 4th of July parade in Northbrook last year, where Kirk and Seals both marched.

Northbrook is just below the "bulls-eye" for the 10th and is pretty much a bellwether of the district's demographics.  It's not quite as wealthy as the North Shore but still more well-to-do than most of the rest of the district.

Seals definitely received more cheers and applause than Kirk from where I was standing.  But the biggest cheers were for the "Northbrookers for Peace" group carrying banners that said "Support the Troops--Stop the War!."

That was a pretty awesome sight in what has traditionally been a fairly conservative community.

...but not a community that sends many of its sons and daughters into uniformed service.  For as many similarities I found on the surface, it's one of the stark differences I found as a Northbrook native moving into Poway, CA (CA-51, Duncan Hunter's district grumble.)  North Shore folks like to keep their money, but they tend not to be blind rah-rah warmongers.  Kirk may have voted in line with his party, and he'll play the Pelosi-as-boogeyman game, but religious wingnuttery doesn't play in John Hughes suburbia.

It would be nice to see Seals elected, but God forbid he plays fast and loose on spending bills, he'll have a very hard time come next election.

It's nice to see someone label my old hometown as a bellwether, but people shouldn't be confused about the wealth factor.  The difference now between Northbrook and say, Winnetka, is using bricks of C-notes for pillows versus filling the pool with them, Scrooge McDuck-style.  My family couldn't afford to move there nowadays.  :-)

This is my Congressional district.  Obama is very popular here.  Kirk's had 2 serious challenges - vs. Lauren Beth Gash (state rep) to get elected and then last year with Seals.

Obama's nomination and Durbin's means high Democratic base turnout for November even without support money for Seals from the party.  That's trouble for Mark.

Most of his recent communications with the District are trying to play down Kirk's GOP credentials and emphasize work with State Senator Garrett (Dem) and Rahm Emmanuel and the Illinois Congressional delegation.

    Thanks Mark.

In the last seven-plus years I think we’ve seen that George W. Bush has unified the William McKinley/Warren G. Harding Coalition of people who are afraid of the 20th Century and all of its new-fangled progress.

If you think the Republicans hit bottom in 2006...you aint seen nothin' yet. I don’t know about you, but I feel stronger now.  I feel that the country was pretty shocked by what they saw from the President over that time. Our job is to move the focus beyond just him to other things the Democratic Party stands for – like accountability, lower taxes for the majority of Americans, international and foreign corporations paying taxes based on gross-receipts from Federal and State projects, tax-equality for work-based income so employed Americans pay no more taxes on income than investors and financiers, national security issues that actually make us secure, freedom and liberty, and an end to government-sanctioned torture – to name but a few..

I hope you will work on Election Day. This will be a huge one. Money isn't everything but with boots on the ground and millions of dollars from Washington and hard-working folks around the country coming in to Dan Seals, we can join up with Nancy Pelosi and really move forward on the Obama agenda. We can bring real and positive change to America and its people.

So Mark, in large part due to your efforts and those of your Republican Party we have had years of greed, avarice, neglect and cronyism, which has forced us to articulate a vision of a better America. Thanks for this opportunity. We really could not have done it without you.

I live in the District and my wife has volunteered for Dan Seals last time and this cycle.  The district is trending Democratic, particularly in my neck of the woods.  In previous cycles, Cong. Kirk has successfully projected a moderate image.  Last cycle, he never indicated he was a Republican.  Challengers haven't been able to tag him on this sufficiently.  Unfortunately, the D3C didn't provide enough support last time, but Sen. Obama is likely to help out this time.  Mark Kirk prior to being elected was on Cong. Porter's staff, a true reasonable moderate Republican.  When Porter retired, Kirk road in on this reputation.  His voting record speaks loudly about him. Two cycles ago, I saw him at the train station prior to the election.  I indicated I was troubled that he continued to follow the lead of the Republican leadership too much.  He responded with an attitude that he was a moderate on a lot of issues and that I was just listening to false claims put out by his opponent.  I responded instead that I had been following his voting record.  His attitude bothered me alot.  I think this audio is indicative of his true colors.  Cross your fingers it catches up to him this time.
