When Democratic leaders unveil their energy/gas price legislation later this week, Clinton's provision is NOT expected to be part of it. Why? Since Obama is against the Clinton plan, leadership doesn't want play favorites. Instead, Clinton will likely get a chance to offer her proposal as an amendment. Equally notable is the divide among Senate Democrats -- and the leadership itself -- over whether suspending the tax makes economic sense. A perfect example is Sen. Patty Murray, a Senate leader and Clinton supporter, but who opposes the gas-tax holiday.

As for McCain's plan, GOP leaders didn't include it in their energy bill when they introduced it last week, saying instead it focuses is on oil production. But even if all 49 GOP senators faithfully lined up behind McCain to support it, they'd need more than a handful of wayward Democrats to reach what would likely be the 60 vote threshold for passage.

Yeah... the Democrats will line up to support and provide cover to McCain in an election year... lol... and if it's Hillary's plan, with the windfall profits tax addition, good fucking luck...

The last time a similar measure came up in November 2005, it couldn't even draw in 40 Democratic votes.

    Two things will happen if the gas tax is repealed:

    1.  Department of Transportation maintenance funds will evaporate;

    2.  Gasoline retailers and suppliers will simply gobble up any tax reductions, just like they did in Illinois several years ago.

    So not only will our infrastructure continue to deteriorate by continuing to defer maintenance, no one will save a penny for it.

    I could be wrong, but I'm fairly sure that's not its official name, so referring to it as "the Cheney energy bill" is pure spin on Clinton's part.

    As I understand it the bill included some tax cuts for energy companies but also counterbalanced by other tax hikes on the same companies. Seems fairly pointless to me but it certainly wasn't just a tax cut for energy companies as Clinton paints it to be. It also included other provisions which Obama supported (sorry don't have specifics). And he felt it was the best bill that could be constructed given the makeup of Congress at the time.

    Just to make things more confusing, I think there were two different versions of the bill that went through the senate at different times with very different amendments on them.
