Anti-Worker Forces At It Again!

So I'm just sitting here, minding my own business, watching some news on MSNBC.  Then, all of a sudden, a commercial comes on the air.  I'm told that unions are trying to steal my right to a secret ballot.  That a crude Italian mafia stereotype is going to browbeat me into signing a card to join a union.  That all my co-workers will stare at me disapprovingly until I sign.  This was all brought to me by the friendly people at the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace.  I'll tell you more about it after the jump.

The Coalition for a Democratic Workplace has just started a nationwide ad campaign to fight against the Employee Free Choice Act.  For those of you who don't know, the EFCA is a bill that, when it finally becomes a law, will

restore workers’ freedom to choose a union by:

   * Establishing stronger penalties for violation of employee rights when workers seek to form a union and during first-contract negotiations.
   * Providing mediation and arbitration for first-contract disputes.
   * Allowing employees to form unions by signing cards authorizing union representation.

Clearly, this bill will make it much easier for workers to form and join unions.  And why is that good?  Well, unions have given us many things, such as:

1.  The weekend off.  (no longer available in all areas)

2.  The 8 hour workday.  (no longer available in all areas)

3.  Improved worker safety conditions.  (no longer available in all areas)

4.  Better wages for organized working people.

5.  Better conditions for organized working people.

6.  Better benefits for organized working people.

So why aren't all of these things still available everywhere for everyone?  Because the gains that were achieved by organized labor have been steadily eroded by politicians bought and paid for by corporate lobbyists and interests.  And if we're not careful, what few protections we have will be stolen away.  And the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace wants to ensure that happens.

You see, the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace is not made up of friendly pro-democracy types like their name suggests.  Let me give you a list of who makes up the Coalition.

I apologize for the list being so long.  But this is what working people are up against.  Blame them.  They're the ones bringing together every anti-worker group in the country to try and beat down working people once again.  They're the ones trying to reestablish a Gilded Age here in America where workers have no rights whatsoever.  And there's only one way to stop them.  We have to fight back.

What works out well is that we have already started fighting back.  We need to beat them at the ballot box in every city, every district, every state, nationwide.  We need to make sure the people we elect know who we are and what we care about.  We need to make sure that our elected officials know we will have their back if they defend working people by supporting EFCA.  And, most importantly, we need to make sure that our elected officials know that we will toss them out of office the first chance we get if they betray America's workers.

So who's with me?  Who's ready to stand up for working people?

  EFCA might be the single most important piece of legistation for the entire progressive movement.

  Polls indicate that a majority of workers want to join unions, but they just can't get a fair vote under this employer-dominated NLRB.  When we pass EFCA, we will see a huge surge in unionization....

  •  I know of one industry that sorely needs unions.

    It's not one you'd think of either.  Contract attorneys.  Right now, most big law firms contract out a lot of their work through temp agencies to inexperienced attorneys so they can get through their discovery process.  It's all hourly work and most places don't pay overtime.  There's no guarantee of work, so once a project finishes, everyone is back out of work again with no health insurance.  And when they are working, they're paying hundreds of dollars a month for that insurance.  A law degree doesn't provide the guarantee of a comfortable living like it used to and those contract attorneys deserve the right to organize and bargain for better benefits and hours.

  the current election process is a sham of democracy.  it's the reason why over 60% of American workers say they would join a union if they could, but only 12% or so are in a union.

  Fighting for and upholding our civil liberties is an  ongoing process. So many think that because these battles were once won by our parents, grandparents and remote ancestors that all the work has been done for us!

  This is so far from the truth. These groups have taken advantage of complacency and regained a strong foothold in our society.  

  Thanks for the list.  It does help to know what we are up against and reinforces the need to stand up in unity!  After all, the enemy has.

      And thanks for your excellent work on this diary.  It's unfortunate that everyone is so obsessed with the primary race that it won't get the attention if deserves.  The issue it is dealing with probably matters more to the long term future of working people and progressive politics than who wins how many delegates today.

  does. Union busting. But you know what? This kind of ad works on people who don't pay close attention, and that includes union members whose only input on the issue may come from that ad. Why isn't there an umbrella organization for unions that can fight these kinds of misleading ads?

    which is not what it should be - a shadow of its former self, weakened by defections, overly cautious - it's still a very important organization and has a serious plan to enact EFCA.  My union (CNA/NNOC), which is part of the federation, is planning a major effort to enact EFCA, in concert with the federation

      I worked for the NH State Federation of the AFL-CIO back after my first year of law school.  Some of the most rewarding work I've ever done.  I'd love to do some work like that again.

  •  to better understand that industry

    Try to dig up a copy of "Confessions of a Union Buster".  Parts of it are a little maudlin, but it provides a very interesting window into the mind of the union buster and the industry istelf.  Most interesting for me was that the techniques I saw used in a hospital in 2000 were virtually identical to what the author describes using in a coal mine in Kentucky in the 70s.
     It's out of print, but last time I looked you could find used copies on Amazon.

  Here, here! EFCA is the only way to go.

  It's all about freedom of association, to provide for the common defense.  Strong unions are the best protection against the offensive behaviors and unsafe working conditions perpetrated on wage earners. Strong unions are a powerful way to collectively advocate for a fair share of the wealth the workers earn. Strong unions make life better for all.

  I hope we can put the union busters out of business with this one. That's why so many of the bosses on the list are trembling-they're organized. We should be too.
