Lake County GOP chief says "no hanky panky"

The Republicans also had primaries in Indiana, and the Lake County Republican Party chairman says there's no shady dealings going on in the county.

"Lake County Republican Chairman John Curley stood by his Democratic counterpart Rudy Clay as the nation waited for vote totals from Lake County. "There's no hanky panky going on," Curley said after members of the national media wondered why Lake County's votes were taking so much longer to count than the rest of the state. "We have more than 11,000 absentee ballots, far more than we've ever had before," Curley said, insisting it simply takes time to get through that many tallies.

The two party chairmen planned to meet at the government center at about 11 p.m., and Curley promised the vote totals would soon be released."

Any efforts to mess with the vote in the county would need the assistance of the county's GOP, which seems unlikely. Especially since it was in the GOP's interest to keep Clinton in the race.

Update: Wow, Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott made Gary Mayor Rudy Clay look like an idiot.

Meanwhile, Clinton is going to pull this off. Barely.

      But I think what he was trying to say was that no precinct would report until they had counted their absentees.  This makes a kind of sense.  In the Indy county has one or two percent uncounted, that may ALL be absentees... Lake county doesn't want to do that but let each precinct be counted in toto.

          The Hammond Mayor was attacking Clay for the slow results of the entire county.  Not 3 minutes later, the remaining Lake County votes came in, all from the southern part of the county- the Hillary parts- all far from Mayor Clay's Gary, IN.  The Hammond Mayor came off looking like a Hannity-wannabe, and should be made to publicly apologize to Mayor Clay.  

          I don't live in IN, but in most places, mayors aren't in charge of the county elections office.  There are county officials who handle that.  To hold Clay accountable for late returns was improper and the Hammond Mayor knows it.  He acted like a total ass, especially for a Democrat.  What a jerk.

            The media were all bent out of shape because their "stars" had to stay up late, miss dinner parties, and an early bedtime.  This is the typical media storm in a teacup.  The votes were only a few hours late.

            The reality is: 1) it was a very large vote, 2) Lake county is in later time zone, and 3) citizens, who eagerly decry raising taxes to pay for anything, failed to pay enough to have larger election board staffs on hand to count the vote a rate to afford the media elite their luxurious lifestyles of a quick and easy lifestyle to which they have become accustomed.

            Little was learned from the 2000 vote count debacle and those who fail to heed the lessons of history are destined to repeat it.

            Whether the mayor of Hammond apologizes or not, he might want to reflect on how damaging his false charges were to whatever PR efforts Lake County has had in trying to demonstrate what a friendly place Lake County and Hammon might be.

            As for the mayor of Gary, I say job well done.  The media wants viewers to believe the world revolves around them. You said it like it is, even if the media elite didn't like the message and were eager to take it out on some one.  

            America has lost a lot in the last 8 years.  Should it also dispense with the Golden Rule too?

            Get over it.  Move on. Learn from your experiences.

    Lake County has half a million people.

    As far as I'm concerned, Indiana tonight is Missouri redux.

    The cherry on top is that Hillary might get a 3:00 am phone call.  (If she's lucky. I hope this thing isn't called until sun-up. Make Bill squirm is what I say.)

  And they have a law which forces them to match absentee ballots and count them per precinct (which reduces absentee ballot fraud). They don't mention that on the air. Also, they ran out of ballots, which forced printed ballots, which had to be counted by hand.

  It's a poor area with limited resources, they were overrun with voters, the polling places were to close an hour later than the rest of the state, and some polling places were held open an extra two hours by a local judge because of problems. Nothing fishy there at all. Nothing we haven't seen in poorer, urban communities nationwide for months now.

    has a population of around 7000 mostly white people (per wikipedia).

    Blackford County has twice that population at around 14,000.
    Blackford results:
    1940 HC
    1024 BO

    So, Just guessing that Union County results are about half of Blackford Couty.
    sp expect about 450-500 votes that he will have to make up.
    I'm not sure what is taking them so long to get them in.

  I posted as such in the earlier results thread...but your suggestion late results were evidence of vote tampering was groundless, and dangerous, in that it puts it "out there". I've served on precinct boards that took three hours to do reconciliation at the precinct level. Some counties aren't as well funded as others and take longer. There are plausible reasons for late results, but speculating about fraud is dangerous and plays into a Republican meme without having any factual basis.

      Election fraud is serious business, it's a serious accusation, simply throwing it out there without any basis in fact is completely bogus and does disservice to true cases of fraud.

      You can bet Republicans will trot this out when they try to get their next "Voter ID" initiative to suppress the vote.

  ...certainly feel that voter fraud is the ONLY explanation for the close race.  If you visit Talkleft.com, you will find that "Big Tent Democrat" has gone on an anti-Obama supporter crusade, eliminating any criticism of the notion that this was anything other than a free and fair election.  

  Voter fraud, the Rovian tactic used to suppress Democratic votes for the last eight years, is now being openly employed by Clinton's camp. It is apparently unfathomable that Obama, a son of Chicagoland, would pull a close one in Indiana.  So unfathomable, in fact, that virtually all posts by Obama supporters are being deleted.
