My Advice to Fellow Obama Supporters for Unity (Updated)

Wed May 07, 2008 at 05:00:34 PM PDT

This will be a relatively short diary, attempting to expand on a comment I made in dawnt's excellent diary.

There are calls for unity from Obama supporters and Clinton supporters alike.  As an Obama supporter I have a swirl of emotions about the tone and tactics of the recent campaign.  I fully get the practical need to come together.

I also understand the resistance fellow Obama supporters feel toward immediately displacing honestly come-by antipathy about Clinton campaign tactics.  I am sure I'm not alone in feeling that many things crossed non-negotiable moral lines that mark out why we joined the Democratic Party in the first place.  Living out our best selves by embracing the better angels of our nature is easier said than done.

I think there is a way through this for people like me, in the way we talk to Clinton supporters.  Here are the truthful considerations in the calculus:

  1. Time heals a lot of wounds.  I feel the wounds of the Clinton campaign's approach to people like me (Obama supporter), but in time I know they will recede.  I know this because as a human being I've been through this pattern many times before.  We all have.
  1. We have six months to accomplish a very important goal.  Achieving that goal will require some emotional poise.  Venting some spleen is competing with the level-headed strategic goal of how we will see Obama raise his hand on January 20, 2009.  Which one will make us feel better?
  1. It is important not to lie about our own hurt feelings (even though our candidate won) and be inauthentic about why we were hurt.  Inauthenticity is more transparent than we think it is, so it's a waste of time.  No cloying praise of Clinton or her supporters if it doesn't feel real right now.
  1. There is a massive difference between language of blame and language of personal ownership.  My incredibly wise couples-counseling mother taught me that one a long time ago.  "You made me feel..." is unbelievably different between "I feel..."  Simple lesson, but incredibly important.
  1. So important that I want to repeat it.  Clinton and her supporters did not make me or you feel or think anything.  We think and feel the things we think and feel because we chose those responses.  The way we express this in the coming days of unification will make all the difference, I believe.

That's my contribution to navigating the confusing feelings of happiness, residual anger, excitement, fear and hope about how we as Dems approach this next stage.

Speak your truth.  Simple, declarative statements of that which you own in thoughts and feelings.  You can say, I heard Clinton say X, and I reacted with feeling Y.

We need to offer genuine olive branches to Clinton supporters and they need to acknowledge our truths as well.  Language of blame gets in the way.

No "Clinton makes me..." diaries and comments.  Instead, "I heard X and I reacted Y."

Finally, it is time again for a new round of diaries about why you originally were attracted to Obama, not why you didn't choose Hillary Clinton.  Why you feel inspired by Obama, what practical changes you're excited about seeing in American government.  With all the focus on process for the last two months, it's critical that as Clinton supporters try to come to grips with their own hurt, we can make the arguments why we feel so honestly that Obama will make a great president.  When you're buried in your support for a candidate and the competition seems hot and heavy, sometimes these are hard to hear.

So, a call for renewal of straightforward, pro-Obama testimonials.  Let's have a collection of the best pro-Obama diaries from the past.  In fact, if people post their favorites they they wrote themselves or saw other people write below in the comments section, then someone can do a diary with all the "Best Of" diaries.  I can do one of those tomorrow or the next day.  Audio Guy wrote one of my favorites, I bookmarked it.

Also, and this has nothing to do with anything, but here is probably the worst thing in human history, hyperbole pre-acknowledged as a tad over the top:

Update: I want to make something clear.  I am not arguing that we are supposed to reinstate Hillary Clinton herself in our hearts as a "good Democrat," if we don't feel that.  Some of us honestly think she is and always was, and for some of us we will never think that again.

That is irrelevant.  I am saying that as someone who formerly loved baseball but has not watched a baseball game in person, on TV since the 1994 strike.  I know how to come to terms with my own feelings about something and honor the strength and clarity of those feelings.  This is about how we express our reactions to the ongoings in the campaign in language of authenticity and personal ownership rather than language of blame.  It's so subtle, but it is everything.

Regardless of whether Clinton is still not giving up, still repeating kitchen sink-type behavior, it doesn't change the fact that many Clinton supporters are officially in a transition process, and they are hurting, and they are reading what we write at an emotionally charged time for everyone.  And it's a small concession on our part, it actually has the benefit of being a more truthful form of expression, and it doesn't compromise authentically held feelings of anger toward the Clinton tactics.  It's nothing but a winning strategy, IMO.  So I put it out there.  If you don't choose to take it, that's ok.  But I believe it's the wrong choice and I am hereafter committed to express myself about Hillary Clinton and her supporters in this way.

I disagree with the recommendations that no further criticism of HRC be expressed by Kossacks at this time.

She is still actively campaigning and actively harming our presumptive nominee and our party.

She still seeks to change the goal-posts ( i.e., FL, MI) and thereby delegitimize all that Barack has accomplished.

She still seeks to overturn the democratic process through the use of superdelegates.

Much of her argument regarding "electability" has been from day one, IMHO, largely race-related and therefore non-productive and hurtful in modern political discourse.  (Lets leave those tactics to the GOP).

She's been given a largely free ride in this race because of her last name and because of whom she is married to .....in fact but for this, she would have been forced to leave the race some time ago.

Let's end this absurdity of a primary season now and begin to rally the party against GOP nominee John McCain.

    Our time is now.

understand that Obama has won the primaries, and he owes her NOTHING.  I'm sure he will treat her with kindness and her supporters deserve a certain amount of breathing space, but she has behaved terribly in this primary and her supporters have done so as well. (We've all had her moments, IMO).  If the shitty behavior continues, I don't think she or her supporters should be coddled.  They lost the race.  It happens.  Many others have done so as well, and have chose to bow out with a lot more dignity and grace.  I suppose we are all willing to humor her for a few more weeks, but not if they keep up the "she wins the white voters" crap.

They have lost the race, but winning the primary does not mean we win the general.  We need these people to come over to our side if we wish to win in November.

someone edited my comment after I posted it.

I'm simply saying that Obama does not owe her anything.  And her supporters on this site, if they are Democrats, should get in line.  It's not too much to ask people to lose with a little dignity and grace.  Threatening the Democrats with a convention fight or implying that Obama can't win whites in the general is not a show of grace.

        •  It's also not to much to ask .... (0+ / 0-)

people to win with a bit of dignity and grace.  It is also true that Obama hasn't done well with whites - this is not Clinton's fault.  It's based on results and facts.  His campaign needs to answer and deal with it.  Hopefully Oregon will put that all to rest.

I know all you bed wetters out there can't imagine a scenario where a candidate wins demographics in the general (or enough of certain demographics) to win the general when that candidate didn't do so in the primary.  It can happen in a closely contested primary.  Despite what the pundits say, the breakdown of the primary vote does not equal the breakdown of the general election vote.

As far as winning with dignity and grace, that does not mean that we need to put up with a bunch of bitching and threats from the Clinton people.  Hillary lost.  Get over it.

,,,me feel anything.  AND I don't feel hurt or wounded or anything else. Never did. That said, I think she ran a dishonest, ugly, manipulative trashy campaign that lowered the standards of public discourse and damaged the Obama campaign.  That won't change.  She will always be the person who did that, who ran that campaign.

She created enormous divisions among the voting populace and now the voting populace is supposed to say 'Oh, okay.'?   That's not a formula for healing; it's a formula for instilling a sense of n umbness and being turned-off to the process.

and Hillary supporters think the same of Obama.
For example diary here today claiming Hillary was racist because her campaign says Obama isn't winning the white vote. That is based on fact and statistics.
But that doesn't stop Obama supporters from making yet another bogus charge of racism. We can interpret anything to mean anything we want when we're focused on character assassination. Sad.

Do you see any kernel of truth whatsoever in that charge (of racism)?  Can you see why some might feel that what was said is offensive?

Also, at the end of the day, if Obama wins the GE, neither I, nor any of his supporters will be taking the oath of office, so ultimately, what we freak out about on a blog is immaterial to the type of candidate he is.

I get that you are upset (or frustrated, or angry, or pissed) at some of Obama's supporters, but what has he done that you feel is "dishonest, ugly, manipulative [and] trashy"?

May this find you in good health and good spirits, and if you're lucky, under the influence of the latter.

we shouldn't get distracted by non-issues, such as Bosnia incident. He didn't have to include that particular line in his speech. But he did. Why can a Sen.Clinton's supporter appreciate that?

When just about all the president candidates mentioned/teased about her crying in NH, again, only Sen.Obama decided not to talk about it. Why can a Sen.Clinton's supporter appreciate that?

When everybody screamed for her to quit, Sen.Obama took time to make a statement saying that she has a right to stay in this race as long as she wants, along with some positive comments about her. Why can a Sen.Clinton's supporter appreciate that?

When Sen.Clinton threw gas into Rev.Wright meme, Sen.Obama could easily pointed out that "well, you didn't think that way about him when you needed his presence back in the day", he said nothing like that about her. Why can a Sen.Clinton's supporter appreciate that?

During several speeches, Sen.Obama said positive things about Bill Clinton's legacy and his achievements. Why can a Sen.Clinton's supporter appreciate that?

And I agree there should be no unilateral disarmament. If I say, Clinton is a horrorshow and here's why, a Clinton supporter can react to that and argue with me.

If I say, "I feel utterly dismayed by this Clinton statement," what are you arguing with?  That I feel that way?

So it's not disarming, I mean, the diary expressly says DO NOT compromise your authentically held viewpoint.  It's saying, look at the difference in expressing these authentically held thoughts and feelings.  Clinton supporters who are beginning the legitimate and honest transition of feeling through their disappointment will know the difference between these kinds of expressions.

      •  Objectivity is hard. (0+ / 0-)

We're used to dealing in the world as a collection of object relations. Becoming more introspective about this in terms of our own emotions and reactions is a lifetime of work. But I commend your trying to nudge the process along in the highly subjective milieu of politics, which is one place where we really and truly need greater self-awareness.
