  MELISSA, Tx -- Mark Robinson was driving through downtown Melissa last week when he was pulled over for failing the use his turn signal.

  But instead of getting a ticket, the officer took the 24-year-old to jail.

  He was booked, strip searched, and sat for 3 hours with criminals. "People talking about using drugs and shooting heroine. They asked me what I was in there for and I said a turn signal violation," said Robinson.

  So then you read a little more of the article and you read this.

  There aren't any warrants out for Robinson. In fact he says he's never been in jail. But he does admit to challenging the officer's questions during the stop.

  In fact News 8 contacted various cities in Collin County, many of which have not made a single arrest this year for not using a turning signal. Even the police chief in Melissa acknowledges he's never seen this happen in his own city. "In the 6 years I've been the police chief, this is the first time," said Chief Duane Smith, Melissa PD.

  But he stands behind his officer, saying state law gives him the power to arrest someone for many crimes, no matter how minor.

  What really makes me feel a little nervous is this quote.

    but I'd want to know more about what "challenging authority" means.  I've seen cases where folks were arrested for mouthing off during a stop.  Never have I heard that they were stripped searched and incarcerated.  Usually its, "OK son, get in the back of the patrol car, we're going downtown."  Then the person is given a good talking to and a ticket.  This is bizarre.

        Benson, former UT football star and current player for the NFL Chicago Bears, was out boating this past weekend on Austin's Lake Travis and got arrested.

        Sgt. Leonard Snyder, who sprayed and arrested Benson, wrote in his report that he believed Benson was intoxicated because he was "combative," "cocky," "insulting" and used "profanity," but at other times was "crying" and "cooperative."

        After failing sobriety tests applied by Snyder, who works with the Lower Colorado River Authority, Snyder wrote that Benson refused to come ashore for additional tests and "stood up from the position where I had him seated and suggested I could not tell him what to do."

        Upon telling Benson he was under arrest and about to be put in handcuffs, "I touched his body in an attempt to direct him, and he presented himself in a very hostile way,'' Snyder wrote in the report. "Benson [5-foot-11, 220 pounds] is a very muscular person and easily capable of overpowering me. As I had exhausted all attempts to gain control of Benson, and been met with resistance and what I perceived as a threat, I administered pepper spray into Benson's face to gain control."

        Realize, now. Benson is black.

        There was also a story on ESPN today that quoted a woman who had been there. She said she called her dad on her cell phone and begged him to call 911 because she was afraid the police were hurting Benson.

        The police said that they weren't picking on Benson, that people get arrested on the lake all the time. But the woman mentioned above said she had been out with Benson six times on the lake, and every single time, he was stopped for "safety inspections."

        I hope he sues their asses off.

  Michigan Democratic leaders on Wednesday settled on a plan to give presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton 69 delegates and Barack Obama 59 as a way to get the state's delegates seated at the national convention.

  Clinton won the Jan. 15 Michigan primary and was to get 73 pledged delegates under state party rules, while Obama was to get 55. The state also has 29 superdelegates.

  The state party's executive committee voted Wednesday to ask the national party's Rules and Bylaws Committee to approve the 69-59 delegate split when it meets May 31. The plan would allow the state's 157 delegates and superdelegates to be seated at the convention.

  A separate plan submitted to the rules committee by Democratic National Committee members Joel Ferguson of Michigan and Jon Ausman of Florida, both superdelegates, apparently will be withdrawn now that the Michigan executive committee has settled on the 69-59 plan. Under their proposal, delegates would have been allocated based on the primary election results, but have had only half a vote each. The superdelegates would have had full voting rights.

  I just ventured to CNN web land and saw an article about Pelosi suggesting that the contest is not over and that HRC can still win.  I had thought that Pelosi said the race would go to whoever had the most pledged delegates.  I would also think that she'd be read to start encouraging an end to this...not encouraging it to continue.  Aghghghg!  I even had thought that Pelosi might be tacitly supporting Obama, if only because it was clear he had and will continue to have the most delegates.

  I know they aren't at all scientific, but I often find them interesting.  Time magazine's website has a poll on their front page asking:

  "Is it time for Hillary Clinton to get out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination?"

  Right now it's running 81% Yes; 19% No.  And there's a map that you can roll your mouse over to see the results state by state.  Texas (my home state) is 77% in favor of her getting out now.
