A blast from the past

I was googling around for something when I came across this oldie, but goodie, from June 26, 2003:

Barack Obama will not be carrying the Democratic Leadership Council’s baggage in his race to become the second Black person to represent Illinois in the U.S. Senate. The state senator and professor of constitutional law has told The Black Commentator that he is acting to have his name stricken from the "New Democrats Directory," a list of several hundred DLC-affiliated elected officials.  

"I am not currently, nor have I ever been, a member of the DLC," said Obama, in a statement that substantially reflects a telephone conversation with   Associate Editor Bruce Dixon, this weekend. "It does appear that, without my knowledge, the DLC...listed me in their ‘New Democrat’ directory," Obama continued. "Because I agree that such a directory implies membership, I will be calling the DLC to have my name removed, and appreciate your having brought this fact to my attention."

Compare to his opponent, Hillary Clinton.

      I now have another reason to love this man - and I'm a straight old white guy. I have not been this motivated to work and vote for anyone since JFK in 1960. I couldn't vote for JFK then because I was only 20 and one had to be 21 to vote then. I can vote for Obama and I did in the NC primary and I will in the GE. I attended his rally in Winston-Salem and he was his usual magnificent self. I don't have any illusion that he is a super man or that he will always promote policies that I agree with, but I do believe that he is thoughtful, intelligent, and is an outstanding strategic thinker with a strong character and that damn well beats anything I have seen in almost 50 years.

            I'm an old white woman, living north of Durham.  My old white husband and I both voted for Obama last Tuesday, and it was such a pleasure to vote FOR instead of AGAINST a candidate.

            I envy your getting to hear Barak in person. I may not get close enuf to hear him, but when he's sworn in next Jan, I'm going up to DC for the Inauguration. I hope I also get a chance to give Bush the finger as he's leaving town that day.

                  and I are big Duke fans too, but its near impossible to get tickets to the mens' games. We became Duke fans in 1978 when we went to the ACC tourney final (some UNC friends gave us their tickets) between Wake and Duke. We were inclined to root for Wake because we live in W-S and my wife was on the faculty at the time, but we fell in love with the way Duke was playing - this was the team with Spanarkle sp? and Gminski - and we have been Duke fans ever since. Regarding the last couple of years - keep in mind that most programs would love to have the record that Duke has had. Just goes to show you how much we have come to expect from the Duke program.

    I remember this item...

    I was among many Kossaks that e-mailed Obama about this when it came to light (pretty sure there was a diary here about it) - especially since he was gunning to be my Senator.

    I got a response back that basically said just what Kos's excerpt says -- he was put on the list without his knowledge, he's not a member of the DLC, and was asking for it to be removed.

    ...I'm going see if I still have the response somewhere.

      Nah. These are conservatives. They abandoned liberalism when the Reaganites turned it into a bad word instead of defending it fiercely as having the same root as "Liberty". They all caved and moved to the "center", which is actually the right, and they believed that because Bill Clinton was able to get elected as a "centrist", then the whole party should do the same. Notwithstanding his demolition of the Democratic Party nationally while he held office.

      What that meant was a seismic shift away from the blue collar, from helping citizens in need, and toward globalization and multinational exploitation for all.

      Hope we can get the center moved back to the center and away from these church-in-state, free-marketeering, cavers.

      and many of her supporters should be knocking on Obama's door and asking how they can help, it is a measure of the man, and his supporters, that they will probably go to them.

      Obama would, most likely, suggest that he doesn't need this diary. He wouldn't publish it himself. But it does serve to remind those who need it of essential differences between the andidates.

      It's a goos diary, simply because it makes a very simple point, without emphasis or distortion.

      ... but I'd advise you to re-read what Obama had to say, and why.  The DLC claimed him as one of their members during his senate race in Illinois.  They did this after the primary, after he ran an amazingly well-organized grass roots campaign to win the Democratic senate primary, and they did it because they wanted to steal a little of his thunder. He won that primary, as he is winning this one, by virtue of a huge number of committed citizens - in spite of the machine.  Obama could have let the DLC claim him. Most people would not have noticed one way or the other.  But he wanted to send a signal to those who got him elected that he is a bona fide progressive. He felt accountable to those who worked so hard to get him elected, rather than to the Daley machine or to the DLC.

      I'm glad Kos posted this.  I supported Obama in the senate primary.  When he insisted the DLC take his name off their directory, it was just one more signal to me that I'd made the right choice.

        (I'd advise you to read some of my diaries before admonishing me.)

        I was very much aware and appreciative of Barack (and a few others) asking to have his name pulled off the DLC list when it occurred.  I have been very critical of the DLC.

        E.g., in March 2007 [sic] I wrote:

        Hillary's Presidential bid must be stopped. No more DLC manipulation. [...] Hillary = Vilsack = DLC = Koch Industries. No, thanks."

        The question before us now, however, is one of timing (not who was right back when). Timing and campaign strategy. Hillary won't pull out until after June 3rd, but well before August. Barack does great once voters get to know him. For some voters, this means getting behind his looks and getting to know his insights, values, soul, heart, vision, and judgment. We don't have a lot of time to reach 160 million voters. If you take the time to read my diaries and umpteen comments, you'll understand the distance I've come to say that I welcome Sen. Clinton's support for the Obama campaign.

    Hillary's folks called the DNC delegate numbers required to win the nomination "phony". They keep confusing the DNC with the DLC. It is easy to do because there is only a one letter difference. Remember the "N" stands for National and the "L" stands for Losers. I hope this helps.
