I got my tax rebate today & the economy is great!

Fri May 09, 2008 at 10:27:16 AM PDT

After months of anticipation and mass mailings by the IRS to inform everyone that they, too, can waste paper with the best of them, my tax rebate showed up via direct deposit.  I don't qualify for the big ones, but I got a nice little sum that is sure to help out a bit.

As the hype goes, this economic "stimulus package" is somehow supposed to help our economy out and solve all our problems.  After all, we're all going to spend it on consumer goods, which is the surefire solution to everything?

On caveat: I live in Canada now.  I'm going to spend all the money here.

This lunacy that some chump change will solve economic woes baffles me.  All one needs to do is scan some headlines to know that the US faces some incredibly massive problems.

From Businessweek:

Are You Ready for Global Turmoil?
Recent headlines—Citigroup's layoffs, Iceland's sudden downturn, worldwide food shortages, etc.—suggest serious global turmoil is ahead.

From Financial Times:

On the pot-holed highway to hell
If anyone doubts the problems of US infrastructure, I suggest he or she take a flight to John F. Kennedy airport (braving the landing delay), ride a taxi on the pot-holed and congested Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and try to make a mobile phone call en route.

That should settle it, particularly for those who have experienced smooth flights, train rides and road travel, and speedy communications networks in, say, Beijing, Paris or Abu Dhabi recently. The gulf in public and private infrastructure is, to put it mildly, alarming for US competitiveness.

You might have expected that investing in US infrastructure would be a hot political topic this year. Well, no. Hillary Clinton spent the final week of her Indiana campaign standing on the back of a pick-up truck arguing for a temporary suspension of the "gas tax", the fuel duty that pays for highways.

You read correctly. Faced with the emptying of the Highway Trust Fund, established in 1956 as the US entered a period of growth and prosperity, Mrs Clinton suggested cutting its source of funds (which she claimed could be made up by a tax on oil companies). It was more important to give Americans a summer break from $4-per-gallon petrol.

Let's not forget oil prices hit $126 a barrel today.

So the country has a crumbling infrastructure (ask Minneapolis), severe budget shortfalls, potential food shortages, uncertain weather patterns, potentials for devastating droughts to hit the southeast and southwest, and a housing bubbles that is leaking billions of dollars of supposed "wealth" into thin air.

And my $328 was going to solve all that.

This diary isn't about offering solutions because frankly I'm stumped, but I'm not running for president either (Obama makes better speeches than me).  I feel better about taking this money and spending it in a country where the minimum wage is higher, medical care is considered a right not a priviledge, and is the home of Terrance & Phillip.

What do you plan to do with your tax rebate?  Will it stem the flow of value from your home?  Will it simply pay down an overdue credit card?

Anyhow, since diaries are always given recommendations based on pootie pics, here's my kitten Butters:

I'm a paper jams

And here's the first bear I saw this spring, about 20 km from my house:

    $1500.00.

Hmmmmmm!  My car insurance bill is due $1600.00).  Guess I put my check into savings, and write a check off of my savings to buy car insurance.  But now I'll have my original amount in savings (minus $100.00).

What candidates come to mind that I want to support.  Thanks Bush (and the stupid Congress that went along with him).  Time to flush out this old crowd (not referencing physical age - I know how sensitive some politicians are to that).

I'm hoping my car will continue being low cost for repairs.  It's at 170,000 miles and still never had an unexpected repair.

Yeah, I've never had a car this reliable and repair-free.

I've spent money on expected things:
            Tires.
            Oil changes.
            Belts.
A new battery after it was 4 years old.
            Replaced brakes at 95,000 miles.

The original warranty covered a leaky windshield wiper fluid reservoir.

Otherwise, nothing has gone wrong.  It's due for a big tune-up and look-see to make sure all is still running well.  It should be good for at least another 150,000 miles, but I don't think I can afford the gas for that much driving :)

My only theory is that car was assembled on the day all the workers were in a great mood, and the boss brought donuts to the factory for everyone and the night before, all the spouses serviced their husbands/wives in a great fashion, because it's just been such a well built car.

      •  Hah! (0+ / 0-)

My estimate was $50 less than the rebate check is supposed to be.  But they always go over estimate anyway.

Married, four kids claimed on our tax return.  We haven't gotten it yet, but using their calculator program that's what it said we could expect.  Supposed to go into our account after the 16th.

We're trying to plan a small three or four day vacation.  We probably should be "responsible" and save it, but who knows when we might be able to get away for a few days again?

  •  At least you got a rebate! (3+ / 0-)

I am in some category that denies me the rebate, but I do fantisize about it..
I could fill up all 3 diesel trucks once.
I could obtain auto insurance for 6 months on said trucks.
I could pay my professional tax due in July.
I could get all my horse's teeth floated.
But one thing I could not do with it is buy something..like, an appliance, or toy, or an item I want as opposed to need.
    Enjoy a vintage Scotch, ok?

I'd go for tequila over beer, actually, but your choice is good, too.  It's easier to say the legos are for your kid than the beer.

I was figuring I'd wait till the PC version came out, then I realized I'd most likely have to upgrade all my hardware to even have a chance of it playing properly on my system...now I'm thinking it's time I just got a console system and Xbox 360 seems like a good choice.  Plus I kinda want to play Bioshock, which won't play on my current computer either.

I still love to play San Andreas from time to time and that game is three years old.  GTA is still my favorite video game franchise of all time.  (Mario Kart is a close second, though)

thats a fave of ours from all the way back on the snes and n64. My kids still like the game cube version too. The Wii one is a real trip. We just figured out last night that you can literally flip the remote (or wheel with the remote in it) back and forth to pop wheelies and do flips. I like that I can play online (for free!) with my sister in PA too.

    •  We got a Wii (0+ / 0-)

with our tax refund. Its what the kids wanted, and they saved up money to pay for about one third of the total price by the time we bought an extra remote and nunchuck.
I'd love to get my husband a 360 though. We still have our original XBox and he goes through Halo withdrawal pretty badly since he beat the original two.

And honestly I'm a Guitar Hero fanatic.. and I think its way better on the 360 than Wii (no downloadable content for Wii yet since it lacks a proper hard drive) and I find missing notes common with the wireless/remote guitar.

Check your local craigslist or GameSpot for discounted 360s.. way cheaper than new at Best Buy.

They just set up a proper Craigslist for Whistler so it hasn't really gotten much traffic yet, but yeah, good call on keeping an eye out there.

The only thing I'd want a Wii for is Mario Kart and the latest Mario Bros. game.  But I want GTA IV much, much more.  I'm a very bad person.

but my kids, and well, yes, my husband, are clamoring for a Wii.  I probably should take this opportunity to buy one...can't do it for a birthday or holiday gift because it has to belong to everyone, not just one person.  We've made that mistake before.

        •  same with us (0+ / 0-)

and we also made them contribute equally (except for our youngest who just turned 4 and doesn't typically earn anything monetarily for "chores")

We almost bought one around Christmas for them. But again, we wanted them to earn it, and partially pay for it themselves.

    spend it in Canada....hahahaha

Well, I'll spend mine in the good old USofA. Gotta do my part to help our economy.

I've got my eye on a Japanese HD/TV, made from Japanese parts, put together by Chinese workers, in a Chinese plant and shipped to the good old USofA via Chinese shipping. It will be picked up in LA by a Mexican trucking company and delivered to my foreign owned retain store.

I just hope it fits in my Honda........

First we'll use it to give us a bit of a cushion in checking while we change banks -- our current bank is on the board of a political lobbying organization that has been pulling some wretched shenanigans in Wisconsin.  But it's a big operation to change all the direct-deposit and direct-payment stuff we've got set up.  So this will give us a bit of wiggle room for something to go wrong.

Then we'll write a very pointed letter to our current bank explaining why.

Then once things settle down, we'll actually spend the money on summer child-care.

I'm thinking long and hard about taking my $600 rebate and adding to it from my savings enough to open a $5,000 e-trade account wherein I will invest in 2 or 3 big oil companies for the period of one year.  What'll my few shares of Exxon and BP be worth in mid 2009 - $6K?  More?  The idea of making a few bucks while our economy tanks, in large part because of soaring energy costs, intrigues me.

    •  Better watch out. (0+ / 0-)

      •  Mmmmmaybe...... (0+ / 0-)

But I've been clicking on 1-year charts, and $5K invested in Chevron a year ago is worth nearly $6.5K today, with some significant fluctuation in that span.  If you sold your shares in Feb, for instance you'd have lost money! They spit out a  nice dividend too, compared with the other big playas. ($0.58/share, quarterly)

Exxon and BP each have yielded about a 10% profit on an investment a year ago today.

I don't think I can bring myself to invest in Exxon, but I have a couple of weeks until my rebate arrives to ponder how low I'll go.
