John McCain Loses His Bearings With Microphone

(Okay, time for some Friday night fun now that we have our Obaminee.)

McCain starts to address an audience and...ooops...which side is up?

Dare I say...Barack Obama is going to put things rightside-up?

Now to be completely fair, McCain figured out his mistake rather quickly. The entire moment was actually kind of endearing, sort of like a fond family memory, if you know what I mean. It's a still capture from a Jeannie Moos essay on the campaign. Here's the key part:

  •  The bearing argument

    is so stupid. If you go to Wikipedia and search for Bearing you get

    Bearing may refer to:

       * Bearing (navigation), a term for direction
       * Bearing (mechanical), a component that separates moving parts and takes a load

    That's right, "my friends", when you say somebody has lost their bearings you are talking about the first entry, you are suggesting that they are lost, not that they have lost their marbles.  Maybe it was growing up along a coast, studying ocean science and seafaring history, maybe it is just my elitist education, but I knew Obama was referring to the term from sailing.  Lieberman should know this too, he is after all a Senator from Connecticut where we have a pretty well known seafaring history.  Maybe he should go to Mystic Seaport or the Coast Guard Academy, there are plenty of people here in Connecticut who can help him understand the difference between navigational bearings and mechanical bearings.  

    McCain, coming from a Naval background, should have recognized the difference.  At this point they are either really this dense or both Lieberman and McCain are pretending to be, in order to help get McCain elected.  Bush was born in Connecticut, Lieberman lives here and McCain lived here (in New London) as a child.  The Republicans are going to give us a bad reputation!
