UPDATE:  Everyone's favorite Portland, ME resident spelled it out for slow little ol' me in comments.  It turns out Johnson was not denying what I thought he was, and is, for once, correct.

Still, I stand by the veracity of my original Diary Subject, and will leave this open as a place to continue to vent, since it's due to scroll off the Recent list into Diary Oblivion soon, anyway.

He is now claiming that Team Obama is lying about something he said, when the exact text he is denying is  still posted on his website, under his name, with the date stamp the Obama campaign claims.

      One of the interesting legacies of the Reagan policy is that we have not had a military coup in any of those countries over the last 22 years--that use to be a fairly common.  The Reagan policy of promoting democracy actually worked and the people of Central America have enjoyed the benefits.  I'm not ignoring the abuses that occurred in Guatemala, Salvador or Honduras.  The death squads and murders were awful.  But we ultimately helped the various Central American nations--including Nicaragua--have free and fair elections.  This is a mo better solution than backing oligarchs and military juntas.  Which is what we did in the sixties and seventies.

        Since it was my post, and the right wing blogs are attributing it to me rather than BTD or even TalkLeft, I deleted BTD's update from my post.

        So if you are looking for me calling KO "a shameless hack" you aren't going to find it because I never said it.

        Soooo.... BTD is a frontpager at TalkLeft who takes up roughly 75% of the real estate there in the course of a day, BUT suddenly he's not part of "TalkLeft?"

        And the way to prove that that name-calling didn't happen was to retroactively DELETE it?

      It's a "whoopsie" by the Obama campaign that changes nothing about the inaccuracy and viciousness of the smear.  The Obama campaign should simply remove that one "LIE" and leave the rest.  That's all.  It's a bit embarrassing, perhaps, but nothing major in the big picture.

            I found the Obama site's wording, "no such update", quite clear.  It was short and to the point.  I think most other readers were probably also able to understand their point.

                Then on May 31, Johnson's site has an item BREAKING NEWS: Michelle's Whitey Problem:

                Given that post, I think it is reasonable to expect that the update to be posted Monday should contain something more than a re-wording of what Johnson has already claimed.  

                Johnson promised an update with "new and dramatic developments".  It promised that Johnson now knew why the tape was being called stunning -- i.e. that he now had specific details of what it contains which he would reveal (possibly in the form of the tape itself!) on Monday.)

                It was a bait and switch.  No such update was published.  Those who eagerly returned to the site Monday to read Johnson's update learned nothing about the alleged tape's contents which they hadn't known the week before.

                Johnson's claim to have talked to 5 sources is merely a minor revision of his previous claim to have talked to first two, then three, then four sources.  I don't call that a trifecta, I call that a bust.

                "dramatic."  Saying that he had talked to people who had talked to people who claimed to have seen the video, and that they said it was "STUNNING" really doesn't add anything to all the drama that he had created previously about it.  

                And he's ALREADY disowned parts of that "update" (namely, that it was "at Jeremiah Wright's church"), since on June 7, he posted an article containing the following:

                The sources who have seen the tape report that Michelle says disparaging things about "whites" and that Louis Farrakhan is visible. There is no identifying information on the segment they have seen to identify the location or time when this was recorded.

                If "there's no information on the segment [his informants] have seen to identify the location where it was recorded, how were they able to tell him that "it was at Jeremiah Wright's church?"  Johnson or his anonymous sources (if there really ARE any sources other than his fertile brain) providing additional details to add verisimilitude, but without the slightest bit of authentication of any of it, is hardly a "dramatic development."  It's part of the pattern followed by every lying witness I ever saw in nearly 3 decades of trying cases.  Everytime this guy changes his story, it becomes more apparent that either he's making the whole thing up, or that his "sources" are making the whole thing up, or that THEIR "sources" are making the whole thing up.  All Johnson is doing is, AT BEST, repeating a rumor he's heard (and that's assuming he didn't make the whole thing up himself).

                I'm still waiting to see the photos of Bill Clinton burning an American flag while he was at Oxford University, or of the papers he filed to renounce his citizenship, both of which a Republican former co-worker with friends at the White House and in GWH Bush's 1992 campaign assured me were going to surface and blow Bill Clinton out of the water, and that some of his friends assured him really existed because they'd talked to the people who'd seen them.  Rumors of the type that predictably happen in every national campaign aren't "dramatic," they're frigging par for the course.

          Simply change the rebuttal to say: "While Johnson did post an "Update" on Monday, June 2, it contained no specifics and cited no sources other than unnamed ones. To this day, Johnson has posted no additional specifics or cited any actual named sources to support his assertions."

          That's all.

          I just want to be clear that I'm feeling real icky defending Johnson, and reiterate that this is a minor, minor oops on the part of the Obama campaign.

            To me, saying "no such update" was published is distinct from saying "no update" was published.

            Your re-wording, attempting to make the point clearer (that an update was published but no such update as had been promised was published) is okay, but I think it's actually not as good as the Obama site's wording.  

            There is, of course, no wording which can't be quibbled with or jumped on, no wording which can't be misunderstood by somebody out there. Even so, there are some ways of saying things which play better than others.   I think the Obama people chose their words carefully and chose well. The shorter answer they published is likely to be more effective.    

            Why?  Because the emphasis needs to be on no, (No, he didn't deliver what he said he was going to) rather than on yes, but (Yes, he published an update, but really there was nothing new in it.) The Obama response puts the emphasis right where it should be.

  Was not when Johnson failed to produce a tape, but when he backed off saying the tape was filmed at Trinity United. For two weeks he claimed everyone was telling him the tape was filmed at Trinity. Then, SusanUnPC produced a photo of Michelle with Farrakhan's wife at a Rainbow/PUSH event at the Sheraton Towers, 11 miles away from Trinity United. After that Johnson said "I never said I knew where it happened."

  Totally deep-sixed his credibility and the stories of his rumormongering sources.
