Sat Jun 14, 2008 at 07:48:21 PM PDT

I just watched Obama's Press guy on the Joe Scare-boro show.  He was asked about the so-called gas tax holiday and launched into a very accurate, technical, well-thought out, academic, but wholly forgettable response.

If the Republicans have done nothing, they have zeroed in on the art of short, repeatable answer.  I will grant you, that having a fifth grader in the Whitehouse made this easy and absolutely necessary, however,  Democrats have to learn how to break it down:

For example, when opposing the Patriot Act, habeus corpus and other extra-constitutional power grabs, don't talk about competing constitutional theories, just say: THIS IS STILL AMERICA! 9-11 Didn't change that!

THE GAX TAX:  The government giveth, the oil companies take away.  If we thought folks would actually see it, we might support it!

INFLATION:

This "pass it on to the consumer" is finally breaking the working man's back.  In Florida, hurricanes coming?  Raise insurance rates and pass it on to the consumer.  Airlines paying more for fuel?  Pass it on to the consumer.  Grocery store paying more for delivery costs?  Pass it on to the consumer.  Electrical utility company sustain damage to equipment during a storm? Pass it on to the consumer.  State revenues low? Increase taxes and pass it on to the consumer. The working man has been carrying it all, with no more money coming in to do it with and is saying: When will somebody take some of this off of me?!

TALKING TO ENEMIES:

The surge is working because we talked to the Sunnis who were shooting at us, but we shouldn't talk to Cuba, who haven't fired a shot?

IRAQ:

Tell those companies doing business and profiteering in Iraq, the trough is about to dry up!  Why is it, the only time Republicans say "money is no object" or "spare no expense" is when it comes to war? Why not the new GI Bill, New Orleans, Children's Healthcare, or education?  We will not build another bridge in Baghdad until we build them in our big cities! How can you build another's house and ignore the maintenance on our own?
Billions for Baghdad, borrowing for us!

RUN-UP TO WAR

John McCain, says "we thought" Iraq had WMD's.  We need a president, inquiring enough to KNOW.  You can not lead, if you are so easily MISLED.

GRAND FINALE:  Put up a clock/timer that shows the cost of the war by the second and have Obama stand in front of it as it ticks upward. Weave state and local cutbacks as a result of funding into talking points.

UPDATE:  Why talk with our enemies Mr Obama? So when I talk to Mothers and Fathers of the fallen, should such talks fail and conflict ensues, I can tell them honestly, I did all I could to avoid the situation we as a nation find ourselves in, we exhausted every measure so that this day would not come and a grateful nation is sorry for your loss.  What does the most powerful nation on the planet lose, by talking?  Nothing. Doing so, does not show us as weak, but reinforces our strength.

UPDATE 2:  ON MCCAIN'S EXPERIENCE AND FAILURE IN JUDGMENT REGARDING AUTHORIZING THE WAR IN IRAQ:  You can't count experience, if when experience counted, you failed!

UPDATE 3:

SIZE OF GOVERNMENT - Conservatives argue for small government and say that liberals want big government.  I want good government, effective government.  The size of FEMA after Katrina was not the problem, it was the effectiveness of FEMA.

CAMPAIGN FINANCE - I have decided to go a new novel way, to the people!  Whatever that makes me, I am happy to be, but I am casting my lot with the people.  When you check the box on your tax return, you don't know who will get your money.  Some people are having their money go to McCain, that do not support him, likewise if I did the same.  Atleast the people who give to this campaign support this campaign.  I am relying on the purest form of public financing .. .by the public.

products there is no doubt the Republicans grasp the basic concepts of how to promote an idea/concept better then we do. They first of all stay on message. And that message is usually pretty darn simple. They also know that words have meaning. They are important. And they attach meaning to said words. Liberal is a perfect example. I am a proud liberal. I mean look up the word. Yet they have, well taken it to mean other things.

How they pull this off is a testament to just how unsophistaced the democratic leadership has been in fighting back until now.

Staying on message = mindless repetition
Attach meaning = redefine through mindless repetition

Basically, they target unthinking sheep. Obama believes we're better than that. 72% of us are, anyway.

I'd tip you for 'redefinition of Liberal' if I'd gotten to it earlier.

      •  Unthinking Sheep? (3+ / 0-)

WARNING!!!! RANT ALERT (Yes I'm going to go on a rant here I am going to blow of some steam and piss some people off.  Deal with it)

If you call voters unthinking sheep, WE WILL NOT GET THEIR VOTES!

I am a bit sick of this condescending attitude.  There seems to be a certain breed of Democrat who thinks:

"I am too good to campaign, I am so much smarter and better than everyone else that I am magically above your petty 'campaign tactics' and strategy.  I refuse to plan my campaign in any way!  I refuse to learn campaign techniques, because they are icky and dirty and make me feel gross.  Ewwwwwwwww!

"In fact, instead of recognizing that I have cultural differences with some voters and speaking in a language they'd understand-  I'm going to lecture everyone who disagrees with me like they're a five year old.  I am going tell everyone I think they are stupid and that I'm smarter than them and whenever they say anything I don't like I will throw a tantrum and pout.

Then when the people I yell at disagree with me and I lose the election i will act surprised and hurt and make the same mistakes all over again next time."

...GROW UP PEOPLE! we do not we elections by looking down our noses at voters, voters don't like that.

There is an ART and a science to being persuasive, their are hundreds of books on the subject, the simply fact is, that if you use language in a certain way, you are more likely to get people to agree with you.

That does not mean people are dumb it does not mean people are smart, that is just human nature.

However it WOULD be smart if we learned how to use human nature to our advantage instead of whining about it. And it WOULD be dumb if we ignore proven and valuable campaign techniques, such as talking points and staying on message.

No one is trying to "dumb down" the election, but we are trying to tailor a message that is more persuasive and we are trying, in short, to win.

(by the way i am aware of the HUGE irony that I just wrote a condescending tantrum about telling people not to write condescending tantrums. lol)

...and that was my point Junah.  If you call voters "unthinking sheep" you will not win their vote.  Voters don't like being talked down to.

There are cultural differences within the United states.  Speaking to people in a language they will understand is not "dumbing down," it is a sign of respect.  And we must respect voters in order to win thier votes.

I agree that treating voters like adults is great. However, assuming that everyone who disagrees with you is a child or an idiot is bad.

I criticized the strategy itself for its implicit view of its audience's intelligence. The Rs believe Americans are so easily frightened and led. Sheep. This is their view, demonstrated by their tactics. Propaganda is aimed at those who will accept and follow.

However:  In some cases, it works. What would you call these cases? How should their critical thinking skill be characterized? Say I did insult them indirectly-- would we be able to secure their votes in any case? Or would they be blown over by the next gust of huffing and puffing from FOX Noise?

buried in many questions is a false premise that assumes a basic philosophical outlook on an issue as being right, instead of discussing whether the premise, itself is correct.

Whether it is tax, energy, healthcare, security or the economy, the same principles apply.

    Speak in terms they understand.

Social Security?  Why shouldn't Americans who've paid into the system their whole lives be entitled to a return on that investment?  ROI is the mantra of modern business...why isn't it good enough for the taxpayer?

What other benefits should we have a legitimate right to expect for our tax investment in this Country and our government?  Healthcare?  Security? Education?  I argue these are not merely legitimate expectations for a hard working, tax paying populace, but are quite literally national security issues?

How secure is a bankrupt, sick, debt ridden and ignorant society?  Is that what our forefathers worked to build?  But that's exactly where Bush's "unbridled capitalism" policies are taking us isn't it?  No hyperbole needed here, the reality is staring millions in the face and with each economic down tick, the number grows....

And then there's the issue of trusting your government to keep as trust our future health and security.....instead of corruption, nepotism, no-bid contracts and gigantic amounts of magic money that simply "disappears", PROMISE FIDUCIARY RESPONSIBILITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY!!!

Again, if Fiduciary responsibility is good enough for business, then why not for government....take the same motive that causes Corporations to cut wages and safety in pursuit of profit and put it to work creating a better  America.....imagine a fiduciary responsibility to ensure the public welfare....

We aint asking for a bed of gold,  but a reasonable expectation that hard, honest work might pay off to at least sustain a reasonable retirement aint asking too much.....

Why is it, the only time Republicans say "money is no object" or "spare no expense" is when it comes to funding war profiteers who get rich off war and sacrifice nothing? The soldiers give their lives and we get stuck with the bill to  Bechtel, KBR, Blackwater and Halliburton, private companies getting rich off war.

it's sad we have to dumb down the rhetoric, but the democrats with a higher IQ already get the logical reasons.  Now he has to appeal to those who are offended by big words.

    •  Intellect Means Learning to USE Emotions (3+ / 0-)

The intelligent and smart thing to do is to learn what works and do that.

Winning elections is a SKILL.  There are certain techniques that help us win elections the only rational thing for us to do is to learn how to maximize our chances of winning and do that.

It would not be intelligent to continue making the same mistakes again and again.  We have tried simply giving the American public a laundry list of programs and asking them to vote for us.  That did not work.

Communication is as much an art as it is a science, we must master the skill and art of speaking persuasively in order to win elections, institute our programs and thus help make our homeland a better place for everyone to live in.

Learning to communicate artistically and is not "dumbing down" our message.  And I do not want to go on a tirade or anything against you, because I can tell you and I agree on a lot and we are on the same team- but you sound a bit condescending towards the voters you are tailoring your message towards.  People are not "offended by big words," if you assume you are superior to the voters you are talking to they will sense that and you will not win their votes.  Condescension does not win elections.

This is a very good diary.  I'm a student and I work as a campaign manager as often as I can (whether I can manage to get paid for it or not!) so I have discussions like this a lot.  LANGUAGE MATTERS.

Mitchman hits the nail on the head!  Winning elections is about more than just having the best policies and the best candidate.  We must also have the best communication skills.  If we do not speak about our political beliefs in a persuasive way then those beliefs will die with us.

I hope everyone reads this post.  We have the best plans for our government policy and we have the best candidate we could hope for to lead our party.  Now all we need is the best campaign and we will win.

There's some great ideas here, especially the clock!

In fact, why should we wait for the campaign to do it?  Some one with some tech skills should just make a website that has a running digital tracker on the cost of the war and post the link of facebook.

Or you could just take the concept of the "in the time it takes you to read this we've spent X dollars in Iraq" and make a video out of it and post it on YouTube.

There's no need to mention Obama in those ideas, they work fine on their own.  (plus there's no sense in us throwing the campaigns name on something they might not want to be attached to).

I hope you follow through on your impressive ideas, I'd do it myself but I do not have the technical skills to make movies/websites.

However, I have little patience with low information voters.  I want to disenfranchise the ignorant.  The Constitution does not prohibit this, it just provides a penalty, which is losing some representation in the House of Representatives.  I want to try it here in Kansas.  We only have a handful of Representatives in the House, anyway.  So what if we lose one or two?  If we could filter out enough of the very ignorant citizens from voting, we could turn Kansas from the historically Republican state it has been, into a great Democratic state.
