Buckeye State Bounce: O 50 M 39

Tue Jun 17, 2008 at 08:48:47 AM PDT

Ohio, Ohio, Ohio.  2004's Florida lost John Kerry the election by 60,000 votes.  Since then, the state has lost thousands of jobs, the economy is hitting it hard, and Ohio voters are ready for change.  But what about those pesky working-class whites that Obama just can't seem to win?  They'd go for Hillary, but not for the new guy ... right?

Wrong.  Ohio wants change.

Yes, you read that right.  Obama 50, McCain 39.  The Republican nominee isn't breaking 40%!  Public Policy Polling, it should be noted, is one of the real all-stars in this cycle and had the honor of getting the results of the Ohio primary dead right.  They know how to poll Ohio, and these numbers are real.

11 points is exciting, but the fact that McCain isn't even at 40 is what's truly encouraging.  This is definitely part of the post-primary bounce, but this was Hillary's showcase state.  It was the centerpiece of her argument for why she would be a better nominee.  It is clear now that her voters will become Obama voters, at least in the Buckeye State, and Barack Obama has a fantastic chance of turning this bellweather state blue.

I wish the best to all the Organizing Fellows and volunteers in Ohio right now, and -- as a former New Hampshire volunteer, trust me on this -- don't let the polls go to your head!
