The GOP, and specifically the Texas GOP, have sunk to a whole new level. The last two weeks have been the calm before the storm. We all know the GOP is going to slime Obama, with racist smears and Willie Horton-esque ads. But as long as McCain can set himself apart from these tired tactics, he won't be held responsible. I'm calling on John McCain to REJECT AND DENOUNCE the Texas GOP, who thought it'd be mighty funny to have a pin that says: "If Obama is President... will we still call it The White House?"
Because, you see, nobody here would say "If McCain is elected, will we call "The Really White House" or "The Retirement House". Or maybe we would. But it wouldn't show up at a Democratic Convention!
We need to hold John McCain responsible for his minions. We gave Bush a pass with Swift Boats.
John McCain should know better than this. John McCain was the victim of these same racist tactics.
This falls into the same line of ridiculous assertions, and we're already seeing it. I remember a right-wing Republican once told me that if Hillary was elected, at least she'd redecorate the White House.
We cannot stand for this. The slanderer Larry Sinclair and Floyd Brown and Roger Stone are going to be doing everything they can to help McCain get elected: no matter what it takes. And considering the terrible "ideas" that McCain has, they believe this is their only weapon. We ought to take that away from them.
Disgusting, Texas GOP. Disgusting.
UPDATE: From the comments.
from Droogie:
But I'm picturing the GOP Congressional Caucus watching the Obamas moving in.
"There goes the neighborhood," they'll say, in an Archie-Bunkerish voice
.
I did a spit take when I read that.
From Wader:
If Obama is President . . . your women won't be safe" buttons. It can't be far off, I figure.
Other suggestions: When Obama is President, will the national anthem be that infernal rap "music"?
And, my favorite, from Cammie:
Admittedly, I laughed. Since I am black, is that okay? It's a dumb and ignorant button, but it's still a little funny.
UPDATE 2: Some people in the comments have pointed out that it wasn't the Texas GOP who were selling these buttons, but rather a booth at their event. May I ask... what the hell is the difference? Sure, it's not as bad, it wasn't Cornyn walking around with one, but it's still a nasty smear and it shows the mindset of the GOP right now. They're using racist tactics, but trying to pin it on "outside groups beyond our control". It's Swiftboating. And we cannot give them the benefit of the doubt!
