Top Comments: The Most Prolific Daily Kos Commenters
Sun Jul 20, 2008 at 07:03:30 PM PDT
One thing the Top Comments series celebrates is good writing. Whether in-depth comments that rival the best diaries (and sometimes are expanded further and posted as such) or perfect one-liners, many Kossacks read gold and tell us about it daily in Top Comments.
We also celebrate what the Daily Kos community like as noted by their comment recommendations: those comments that get the most recs from readers. It's why we exclude tip jars from our first list of top mojo: recs there are generally for the diary, not necessarily for the actual comment.
This diary is also about comments, and about top comment writers: the people who are tops in the number of comments they have written. If you follow me over the flip, in addition to today's top comments, you'll find the Daily Kos users who have published the most comments on Daily Kos.
This diary is an offshoot of the established Prolific Commenters series, which I took over from plf515 at the beginning of this year. Previous installments have been for people who were most prolific in particular months, or for a year.
For today's diary, I looked at the people who have made the most comments since counting became feasible: since Markos set up the Scoop platform for Daily Kos starting October 13, 2003. In the 57 months and one week since (a bit under five years), people have written a lot of comments: over 20 million, in fact. (The 20,000,000th comment was noted in a diary by ct on June 13, 2008; it took under four years and eight months to get there.) There were over 16 months of comments before then, when Daily Kos ran under Movable Type, but there's no way to count them—no search functionality at all; comment threads are large single blocks of text. Additionally, comments from a month and a half in summer 2003 have been permanently lost.
There was a clear winner in the comments stakes: Armando was by far the most prolific commenter, even if you don't include his days as Big Tent Democrat. So much so that even though he's been gone in both incarnations for over 16 months, his position on the list looks solid well into 2009, if not all the way to 2010. Heh.
I've included the top 30 31 32; there was a nice break at that point, with over a thousand five hundred comments before the next commenter. There are just three columns: User Name, User ID, and comments under Scoop (Scoop Comments). I've added an asterisk after the number of comments if the user has been inactive for at least two months, and the total is therefore unlikely to change in future.

Finally, a brief reminder for those of you who haven't seen any previous Prolific Commenter diaries: because of the nature of Daily Kos search, indices for comments made in the past 21 days have overlap in them, causing Search to return some duplicate entries. These duplicates are counted in the totals, but eliminated in the entries it will display for you. If you've ever asked for 30 entries displayed per page, but only received 24, it's because there were six duplicates that had to be eliminated from the 30 returned.
This means that most totals (except for asterisked entries) are somewhat inflated...but we have no idea how much. It could be a few dozen or a few hundred, depending on how prolific that commenter has been in those 21 days.
Update, 7/21: added ben masel to the list. Did I miss anyone else?
Later: Yes. Adding inclusiveheart to the list in eleventh place.
Still later: corrected Eternal Hope's comment total—had transposed the two digits after the comma.
~~~~~
With much of the Daily Kos community at Netroots Nation or finding their way back therefrom, commenting was slow over the past 24 hours: fifteen thousand comments only were published. Still, there were some gems to be found, so you can check out nominations from a reduced number of your fellow Kossacks who were around to read them in the past 24 hours.
If you saw any great comments that are not mentioned here, please link to them in your own comments below. The address of that mailbox:
monkeybiz submitted the following nomination:
As a proud daughter of Pennsylvania, I have to nominate this entire exchange from highacidity's 'Pittsburgh is it--NN09.' It's a beeyoudeeful example of regional accents. Some folks might grex about the choice but I like it!
From an Unknown Nominator:
In Stranded Wind's diary 8,500 U.S. banks; many will die soon, SensibleShoes writes on the Wachovia Bank tower in Winston-Salem. You have to click on the link in the comment for the rest to be intelligible.
Lava20 sent:
Here's a great comment I would like to submit. [Editor's note: you should take a look at this comment by Muzikal203 first for context before clicking on indycam's comment.]
From your diarist sardonyx:
In last night's British PM Sides with Obama by DanK Is Back, dweb8231 asks a hopeful question. There were some good answers, too.
