NJ-05: Dennis Shulman featured in Time Magazine!

Cross posted at BlueJersey.com

It appears our good friend and NJ-5 Democratic candidate Dennis Shulman has a nice article written about him in Time Magazine.  It's very positive and displays the great qualities about Dennis that we at Blue Jersey have come to love.  Dennis has also been mentioned here at Daily Kos for his inclusion on the DCCC's "emerging races" a few weeks ago.  His race has garnered some nice attention nationally, and it gets even better with a feature article in Time Magazine.

The main focus is of Dennis being a rabbi, as detailed in the title of the article.  It also touches on the "change" theme being embraced by the Obama campaign and many Democratic challengers across the nation.  Though the realities of a tough race against Garrett are noted, there are some positive trends in my hometown district:

"A self-described mainstream Democrat, Shulman is "outraged" by the direction in which the Bush Administration has taken the country. And despite Garret's advantages of incumbency, he believes he has a decent chance of unseating the Republican. According to his campaign's internal polling, the district has caught the "change" bug: 69% of the district thinks the country is on the wrong track, and even Republican voters overwhelmingly disapprove of President Bush's performance. According to the Shulman numbers, the district's lopsided Republican-to-Democrat registration notwithstanding, an equal number of voters plan to vote Republican (39%) as plan to vote Democrat (39%)."

Perhaps the best part about the article is how it frames issues that are important to voters of the 5th district (SCHIP, healthcare, energy policy, among others) as moral imperatives, a theme Shulman has used in his campaign, and with much clout as a rabbi.

Win or lose, Shulman, who runs a Sabbath morning discussion group at his synagogue (currently they're dissecting the Book of Job), views entering the political race as an ethical imperative. He often frames issues such as universal healthcare and energy policy in moral terms, and adopts an almost righteous anger when discussing Garrett's positions on social welfare programs such as SCHIP and Head Start.

There are a myriad of religious voters in this district, especially in the western part, which encompasses Sussex and Warren counties.  In order to have a serious chance at winning, Shulman must appeal to these voters, and framing the issues as moral causes seems to be the way to captivate their attention.  The last few candidates (Anne Sumers, Anne Wolfe, and Paul Aronsohn) have all been from Bergen County, and as we've seen Bergen County cannot alone deliver the 5th, especially since Garrett's hometown is Wantage, which is in Sussex County.  I'd like to know how the Shulman campaign is working for voters in the western part of the 5th.

Overall, a very nice feature on our great candidate for New Jersey's 5th district, and hopefully we can get this on the national scene.  Most voters in the 5th are low-information, which is seemingly why they keep electing Garrett over mostly moderate Democrats the past few years.  If this race gets more national attention, perhaps finally a lot more voters will know Garrett's horrendous and out-of-touch record for New Jersey.

I don't think Mike Huckabee or Pat Robertson should be in elected office... and though I'm a Jew, I don't think a Rabbi should be in elected office either.  I'm sure he's 200% better than the Republican alternative, but religious folks representing me makes me uber-uncomfortable.

I think a lot of people would be skeptical about electing a blind man to Congress (ie. how would he read the legislation). I admit I was, until David Patterson came along.

NJ-05 is the proper tag for Daily Kos, not NJ-5. People using tags for finding diaries on the district won't find it using NJ-5, especially as they get fixed.

Also, you should always include the "House" and "New Jersey" tags. I've corrected and added as appropriate.

Time used out of date registration info -- the district is now only 4-3 R over D, having been nearly 2-1 in 2007.

Huge movement toward democrats as the old "Roukema Republicans" move to the Ds.  This district had someone very like Connie Morella representing it for more than 2 decades, a Rockefeller Republican named Marge Roukema.

Shulman will win her old votes....

Dems who stay registered that way through inertia and local races, but vote Republican for president. I'm fairly familiar with this district, and feel there's a decent chance to oust Garrett as a "Bush enabler" in November, despite the R registration advantage.

I see your point in general, oldskool, but this candidate sees to be secular, as opposed to the ministerial examples you cited.

I'll definitely contribute something to Rabbi Shulman. NJ-5 is way too moderate for a right-wing loon like Garrett.

Sussex County is very conservative, and unfortunately for CD 05 residents, the more "moderate" towns were removed for an adjacent disrict.

not only is change brewing in sussex, but it is only 15% of the vote -- Aronoshn lost there by more than 30 percent in 2006, and we will make huge gains there in 2008.

we are not writing any voter off, and have had full time staff organizing the western part of the district since may -- we will win the district by gaining votes EVERYWHERE.

    •  Bergen County.. (0+ / 0-)

still makes up the majority of the district. I have lots of family that lives in the district and while it's no Democratic stronghold, it's not Scott Garrett territory. Towns like Franklin Lakes and Ridgewood have no business sending someone who's more conservative than Garrett's predecessor, Marge Roukama, to congress.

      •  Ridgewood I agree with you (0+ / 0-)

They have a nice mini-metropolitan downtown area, closer to more "urban suburbs" like Fair Lawn, and actually went for Kerry in 2004.

Franklin Lakes, however?  Guess you haven't been there in a while...  It's almost completely inhabited by Wall Street mega moguls and super rich executives.  When the average house price is around $1.5 million, that's not exactly Democrat territory.

Though, most Republican voters in Bergen County are what I call "business-Republicans".  Not really concerned about social issues, but big on economic policies and taxes.  Hopefully Shulman can make some inroads there.  I'm confident he can.

Most of the voters outside of Bergen county are what you would call "Yellow Dog" Republicans...they show up do not even know who is running and just vote a straight Republican ticket...very difficult to get through to them...but we should keep trying...good luck...
