Alaska's North Slope -- that is where they drill for oil they said we needed. They also said oil royalties would spread the wealth, but something went wrong. "Going back to dog sleds is an option," said one. He was not joking. How could this happen? Don't Alaskans get  big checks as part of the deal? Yes, Alaskans do, but they pay more for their gas than everyone else!

What a surprise...

This seems relevant now that Bush wants to expand drilling off the coast. Could someone tell me what exactly this drilling off the coast buys us? They said it will change the psychology, why not solve some real problems? Why not heal the Earth while developing better energy sources? I bet creating a ton of new jobs would help stop all the whining. Bush will never change, why does Congress continue to follow his lead? We are working to take back our country, why does Reid still appease Bush? Why does Pelosi insist we set a table that serves only Bush? Our problem is not just Republicans, it's with our leadership too. This election is more than just picking the next Chief Executive. We should also pick more progressive Democrats to represent us. My friends, President Obama still means we have lots of work to do.

        So for openers IMO drilling isn't going to solve ANY problems with the complex nature of how we got here . For those easily swayed by the prospect of drilling propaganda I would allude to the facts .
        (1) We have become completely dependent on oil with no alternative in the working .(current hybrids are tokens for humor)
        (2)We have lost way too many jobs in this country and the Republicans like it that way . (lower tax base means continued deficit , which means easier to eliminate social program spending )
        (3) It would take many years to see the oil from ANWAR or anywhere else hit the gas pumps . (Biggest political conjecture of all time )
        (4) The immediate increases in the cost of fuel have contributed to the increases in everything else .(simply because of operating costs , shipping and weight on disposable income )
        (5) Does congress really have to tow under to the oil giants or are they just pandering to the Bush Administration ? ( ....................)

    In a country roughly similar (alas) to the one surrounding us now a wise man spoke.

    "You can try to understand the world OR you can try to change it".

    True understanding, grasping the true essence of it comes from the change because in that struggle to change it,you then grasp what is going on, the world changes, you change and true understanding comes about. In fact, without that change, you cannot be sure what is true or not. First change, then understanding. Our knowledge,and therefore our tactics, skills, awareness and ability to change our situation flow from that struggle we must have.

    Without it, this knowledge is superficial preliminary, and very shallow regardless of degrees, Phd's, awards, prizes, etc.

    Stay safe, stay well we got a ways to go yet and these battles are approaching, they are not too far away.

•  Oil and gas producing states

  are often penalized.  OK is the second largest natural gas producing state, but we don't get a break on it just because we procduce it.  I don't agree with it, any more than I think Alaskans should have to pay more for gas.  But, hey, it's just another way for the corporate fat cats and the government to screw the little people....
