    Those of you who missed it?  #17 on the list today.  It's still fun, if you haven't looked yet.  (And SarahLee?  You went a little overboard on the tag librarian thing - it was on the Rec List, so I'm not quite clear why you would remove the Recommended tag.  It was replaced since it belonged...)

    Yeah, those chaotic few days certainly flew by quickly.

      It may be time for another reminder of the official Daily Kos tag rules, which, for the last ten months now, have begun with the following admonition:

      1. Always err in favor of adding new tags, rather than deleting or modifying existing tags. Some folks have expressed concerns about the size of the tag database. In terms of server strain, we can assure you, there is no need to worry. (The tag db is comparatively very small.)

      ...and reiterates the point almost immediately thereafter:

      3. If a diarist chooses a particular tag that might be different from what you've chosen (say, "bellwether state" instead of "swing state"), please respect the diarist's choice, even if your preferred tag is in wider use. Feel free to add your suggested tag as well - just don't modify or delete the diarist's tags.

      ...and yet again, immediately after that:

      4. Tags should generally only be deleted if they contain abusive language (eg, "this diary sucks," "sh*t diary", etc.). [....]

      
      
      As much good work and careful effort as the tag librarians have put into things over the years, their entire remit has now been squeezed down to just this:

      2. Tags should generally only be modified when you see misspellings (eg, Gorge W. Bush) or obvious ambiguities (eg, George Bush instead of George W. Bush, to distinguish son from father). If an ambiguity is not clear-cut, please add a new tag rather than modify an existing one.

        in the case of someone who is a Tag Librarian and knows the rules quite well.

        Sorry, Ray, but I think both you and Land have put your foot in it here.

        I've corrected and/or added tags on diaries and front-page stories, only to see my changes revert. Do we keelhaul the authors? No. They're keeping an edit window open, and keep replacing their old tags each time they republish. They don't see my changes, so they don't know they're effectively deleting my added tags, which is technically against the rules. I don't know anyone who checks their diary after each edit to see if tags changed while they were editing; it's frankly unreasonable to expect anyone to do so...and the same should apply for tag edits, too.

        Finally, the remit you list in #2 was expanded a bit in the comments, though the diary was never corrected to include these clarifications. Kossacks are allowed to remove titles (e.g., Senator), and do a few other similar things to such tags.

          Sorry. I have no doubt that the deletion of the "Recommended" tag was the inadvertent result of overlapping edits; I should have made that clear (in fact, I did, in my head — somehow that paragraph just never made it to my fingers). I would never expect her to intentionally remove a tag like "Recommended."

          On the other hand, that was not the only tag to have been deleted; and that, along with similar deletions that I have seen occur in numerous other diaries recently, is a matter that concerns me greatly.

      I'd guess that both kestrel9000 and SarahLee were making their edits at approximately the same time from the same list, and kestrel9000 saved first.

      It happens quite frequently, and is a common hazard of tagging. I don't know anyone who would deliberately remove a Recommended tag for a diary newly on the rec list, and there's not a chance in the world SarahLee would do it. The tag simply wouldn't have been in the edit buffer she was given when she began editing.
