Got a call from my sister’s boy. He’s in prison. Hi Aunt Lahdee, it’s George. Oh hi George, how are things at Rivers Correctional? Eh, ya know. Say aunt Lahdee, did I hear right, did Bob Novak hit some guy today and drive away? Yes George, but he was caught. Awesome. Why’s that George? Cause if he’s guilty he’ll come here. Oh my. It’s okay Aunt Lahdee. One of the guys, Big John, is really looking forward to meeting him. Dude hasn’t been the same since he fell on old Bill and crushed him. Oh my. It’s okay, I told him I know him. Big John says he watched him on TV. Used to hum the Oscar Meyer song everytime he saw him. Why’d he do that George? I don’t know, something to do with meat. Hey, Aunt Lahdee, I gotta go. Goodbye George. Take care of yourself. I’ll be okay Aunt Lahdee. Big John will make sure nothing bad happens to me, he really wants to meet that guy. Oh my.
It's my world too

media hell will this day bring?

the better Obama does, the worse the press treats him. And they wonder why McCain is so close. Here's an interesting article on The Huffington Post about how bad the press is about to get.
The reality is that positive coverage of any Democrat is limited and temporary for fear of networks and newspapers either being accused of liberal bias or being tossed out of the very serious barbeque loop. Regardless of whether the Democrat, in this case Senator Obama, is having a good day, it's somehow unethical to report on such good news for too long without deliberately concocting an antidote to appease the far-right. So rather than standing up as the only industry explicitly named in the Constitution and defending the very basic idea of journalistic integrity, the corporate media is all too quick to capitulate to these specious Republican attacks -- that is, when they're not tossing their ethics aside and taking bribes in the form of barbeque and McBusch beer from a candidate whom they're supposed to be covering objectively.
The Obama camp needs to get more commercials up and start something, I'm not sure what, to combat this.

ratings are dependent upon bad news, not good news, on conflict rather than peace. The media do not want to let anything go that can possibly provide "entertainment" to their watchers/listeners. Witness the Obama/Clinton battle-to-the-death: anybody who could count both their fingers and their toes could see by the end of Feb. that Clinton was going to lose. But the media had to hype the contest as though it were still a contest almost to June. It was maddening, frustrating, irresponsible so-called journalism. But journalism lives on the intertubes these days, not in the MSM. The MSM is for entertainment.

people interested. As soon as it looks like Obama's going to win in a walk (which I don't think he'll do, but I think he'll win comfortably), people will tune out.
People are desperate for something exciting in their lives. I think rather than watch network news, if they want exciting, they should go for a walk in Novak's neighborhood.

to the country by failing to have UNBIASED reporting. That doesn't mean that Obama should always get glowing coverage, he fucks up sometimes too, but they need to be fair. If Obama had made even HALF of the gaffes/mistakes McCain has made on Iraq alone, he would be getting CRUCIFIED in the news. They wonder why the polls are so close when McCain is running such a terrible campaign, it's because no one is pointing out how bad McCain's campaign is. They are too busy giving him unwarranted praise while trying their damndest to tear Obama down.
by Muzikal203 on Fri Jul 25, 2008 at 05:55:55 AM PDT
Of course they're doing a disservice to the country.
We already know that and have known that for years. I was only sort of offering part of an explanation for why they're doing it, and a bit of snark.

isn't pushing back, not the media.
by Muzikal203 on Fri Jul 25, 2008 at 06:02:18 AM PDT
I think. If he pushes back too much, then he allows them to set the agenda for him -- he's only got so much airtime, and wants to get his message out. There have been a few times that he's pushed back effectively (although I cannot for the life of me right now think of one -- still working on my first cuppa), but if he addressed every one, he'd be letting Fox News tell him what to talk about -- most of which is trivia.
He does have to push back some, you're absolutely right. But he can't address every one of the lame criticisms or he'll never get to talk about things that are going to be important in distinguishing him from McCain.
by Marc in KS on Fri Jul 25, 2008 at 06:05:04 AM PDT
but he could put out more commercials, more memos to the Internet/blogs (when was the last time we had a real memo to promote here?), more surrogates on the television who are armed with all of the right talking points to force the media to pay attention to what Obama is saying (because they clearly don't, they lie and distort his opinion all the time), stuff like that. I'm not saying he should ATTACK the press, but he needs to learn how to manipulate (for lack of a better word) them.

While RR,Jr does a fine job, part of me cringes when I sit down to watch almost any talk show, knowing that the Rethug talking points will be spouted by the guests and/or the host and that they'll probably go unchallenged. Unless, of course, Rachel Maddow is introduced as a panelist. It is truly a comfort to know that someone as brilliant and quick on their feet as she, is on the panel. When she's on a show, I never have to shout at the teevee "Don't let 'em get away with that. Call 'em on it" because she's always there with the perfect argument. Gawd, I love that woman! Once a politician got slammed for using the word "nigatory," which has nothing to do with that other 'n' word, but the press was too lazy to look the freaking word up and see what it meant.
We do have us a sense of sensibility about these things, but sometimes we just need to think things through. Your usage of "spade" was fine, unless we're ready to rename the card suit because it might be offensive.
(I don't know that the etymology of a reference to the card suit is universally accepted, but I think that's the generally accepted explanation about where it comes from.)

important to the country's future than education. To lose a great teacher like you would have been a terrible loss to your school district, your school, your students. We need tens of thousands more Kens. Thanks for staying in a largely thankless job.

because I get thanked regularly by current and former students and by parents. It is not as respected as it should be, but I have not had the kind of negative experiences of some teachers. And while in theory I could make more doing other things (although ironically to move to politics or government now might represent a pay cut that would have to be offset by taking my teacher's pension) I m actually paid pretty decently as a teacher, more than 90%, even 95%, of the teachers in this country.
But we do give lip service to our supposed respect for those who teach, and people often do not recognize the contradictions between praising those who teach and the educational policies upon which we insist.

REAGANS BANK WAS BUSTED IN 1982 5 YEARS BEFORE IRAN CONTRA
the only TV Network that reported this extremely important news was CBS and only one time.
This stunning clip from CBS hasn't been publicly aired in the 26 years since CBS 1982 broadcast.
In the early 1980's the big 3 Networks NBC , CBS, and ABC still dominated the televised News as CNN was still in it's infancy and FOX was still only a Hollywood studio.
It's an important part of history that was stolen from the American People because it exposed the power elite who under the guise of national security commit all types of horrendous crimes throughout the world. If the Nugan Hand bank scandal had been the top story of every media outlet in America then Iran Contra would never have taken place because it involved most of the same secret right wing thugs.

Sutter Health Provides $5 Million to Help Keep Community Health Clinics' Doors Open During State Budget Crisis
EXCERPT SACRAMENTO, Calif., July 24, 2008 PRNewswire via COMTEX -- Sutter Health announced today that it will provide $5 million in loans to help community health clinics continue to provide patient care and stay afloat in the wake of California's budget crisis. These funds will be used to offer direct financial support to more than 600 community clinics that are losing funding every day as a result of state budgetary cuts and delays in reaching a final annual state budget. Delays in Medi-Cal reimbursements, which account for 40 to 50 percent of health clinic revenue, could result in cutting patient services, reducing clinic hours or even closing clinic doors. "Sutter Health has a longstanding commitment to enhancing the health of communities throughout Northern California. Ensuring that patients are able to have continued access to care at community health clinics -- even during this difficult budget -- is central to our mission," said Sutter Health President and CEO Patrick Fry. In providing this innovative financing solution, Sutter Health is partnering with the California Primary Care Association, a trade organization representing more than 600 not-for-profit community clinics and health centers. Catholic Healthcare West has made similar loans through this program.

EXCERPT July 24, 2008 California officials have notified operators of health care facilities that beginning today, Medi-Cal payments will be on hold until a state budget is approved, the Los Angeles Times reports. Medi-Cal is California's Medicaid program. The move comes because an emergency fund dedicated to making Medi-Cal payments to health care facilities has been exhausted. The order will apply to nursing homes, health care clinics and other businesses or organizations that California categorizes as a health care "institution," according to the Times. The 1,200 homes for people with developmental disabilities in California will be particularly hard-hit because the facilities rely on Medi-Cal exclusively for funding, the Times reports. State law requires Medi-Cal to continue paying private physicians who treat Medi-Cal beneficiaries, and pharmacists also will continue receiving reimbursements.

good weeks in terms of actual achievement but it is consistently reported as negative, and remember, lots of people get all their news from the ten minutes they watch Fox or CNN.
If they get news at all. Or they just get it from the poison chain e-mail that tells them Obama wants to be sworn in on the Koran or the Satanic Bible or something.

A lot of people freaking over inflated polls earlier which indicated a blowout. It still may turn out to be but if you look at the states like Ohio...Florida..Virginia...Colorado they should be treated as too close to call. Obama can win without winning OH and FL though. McCain can't.

(And note: I just used "salubrious" before coffee.)

There is an article on a tech blog regarding the U.S. Geological Survey maintaining that there are 90 billion barrels of oil undiscovered in the Arctic:
A geopolitical scramble for the resources is beginning. Russia has taken steps to secure rights to the region, last year sending a nuclear-powered ship to map a possible undersea connection between Siberia and the North Pole. This would allow the nation a rationale to circumvent the UN 200-mile limit of offshore resource claims. Seven other nations have claims for the area, including Norway, Sweden, Canada, and the U.S. Earlier this month, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said the nation intends to "defend" its sovereignty in the Arctic, backing up the statement with a plan to divert 8 military patrol ships to the region, along with a new deep-water port.

on the geopolitical consequences of global warming, even though for the Republicans global warming doesn't exist.
Why can't they seem to do that with peak oil? The geopolitical consequences of that are catastrophic in the extreme if we don't do something about it now.

The point about McCain winnning is that the same people will be running the country. The people that oversaw the collapse of the housing and banking industry, the energy crisis, Katrina, a hundred bribery scandals, spying, torture, kidnapping, rolling back basic protections for the worker, consumer, and environment.
Maybe an ad with a series of quick cuts of all the Bush's greatest hits - floods, torture, foreclosure, bank runs....

As reported on MSNBC, those of you plagued by e-mail spam might be interested in seeing how spammers selfishly react when they're about to be incarcerated for their fraud. It's one thing to kill yourself, but it's something entirely different to kill your wife and baby just because you're facing prison time. Scum.
But don't forget that most men without property would rather protect the possibility of becoming rich, than face the reality of being poor. (1776)

Apparently he escaped from a white-collar prison (where he'd been for tax evasion and fraud) and also tried to kill his teenage daughter, too. He also shot his girlfriend, who had helped him escape from the prison.
