As you may know, Barack Obama appeared in Battle Creek, MI last Sunday. Today I received this email from a friend, who wondered if it was "for real", and looking for some factual info/debunking.

As my friend noted, the letter is poorly written and purports to know what Senator Obama is thinking, without giving any evidence. In addition, the writer is supposedly a cop who was at the event, but the email at the bottom is for a "trainer" associated with a SWAT team oriented website.

Here's the text of the email:

Subject: obama in Battle Creek
>
>As many of you know, I have several friends in law enforcement here in town.
>This was written by some one in the MI state police that worked at the local
>rally when Obama came to town.   It's worth taking the time to read it

>Please pass this along to everyone that you have on your e-mail list because
>this is just the beginning if this arrogant, egotistical, super liberal,

>To all,

>I have read all of the emails from not only some of the MTOA board members,
>but from other Law Enforcement & Military personnel about Barack Obama's

>for a brief second, goes and stands behind the bus out of sight so Mr. Obama

I am surprised at the speed with which this crap appeared. I have looked but cannot find anything about this particular smear; it may be too fresh to have come to the attention of the debunkers yet.

I sent the message and headers to Fight the Smears. Has anyone seen this one yet, or have any knowledge about where it originated, or any idea what incident they could be embellishing and distorting? Any Michigan kossacks at the event who might know anything about this?

It seems like they never run out of lies, or people willing to spread them.

Update: I sent an email to Mr. Kern to see what he has to say. No reply as of yet.

Update: Jason Kern's reply:

[happy camper],

Let me give you some background of this email.

I sent it out to my close co-workers and to the Michigan Tactical Officer's Association Board Members only.  From there, it was sent all over this earth without my knowledge.  I do NOT work for the Michigan State Police.  I work for another agency.  The MTOA nor myself make a habit of sending out emails like this.  It was basically sent to my friends and one of them sent it out to someone else who sent it out to someone else and so on.

I also WAS NOT THERE.  I had spoken with Law Enforcement personnel that their agency was involved with Mr. Obama's security prior to sending it out.  My message starts at the "To all" section.  I did not go on the ranting portion calling Mr. Obama names either.

If I offended you, I apologize.  That is all the information I have on the visit to Battle Creek.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I am curious, sir: did you write this email? Are you a member of the Michigan State Police, and were you at the rally in an official or other capacity? If so can you provide any further details or the names of any other people who may have witnessed this incident? I am an Obama supporter who would be very upset if he actually showed this sort of disrespect to law enforcement officers.

Thank you for your time. I await your reply.

and one learns that he is the Communications Supervisor for the Highland Park Police Department - a small suburban police department with 60 sworn personnel and 19 civilians for a town of 31,000 residents. Since no rank is set forth on the list of contacts, one can assume that he is one of the 19 civilians.Highland Park Police Department Contacts

His response in nonsense. He references a number prior emails from MTOA Board members, then says that neither the MTOA or its board members are in the habit of sending out these emails. He slanders Barack Obama in nearly every manner imaginable, and then claims that he didn't call Barack any names.

So here is my response to Mr. Kern.

I am a former tactical unit police officer for a large urban police force. Both of my sons are sworn officers in the same department.

Your email concerning the alleged Obama incident in Battle Creek has come to my attention, and quite frankly it sounds like a rumor about to become an urban legend. I recognize that you have indicated that you did not witness the incident in person, but are relying on information from others.

In order to ensure that only accurate information is disseminated during this critical period, I make the following offer: if you can provide credible evidence that the incident did indeed take place (i.e. first person witness accounts, incident reports, news reports, or other similar evidence), I will donate $500 to 911CARES, a charity in which I know you have an interest.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

It is against the law for someone active in the military in uniform to appear to be involved in a political event. If there were truly military there and he told them they could not be photographed with him, it would be for THEIR protection, not his.
