Not mine. I don't make them. You can't break them if you don't make them. It's like making promises you can't or are unwilling to keep. I'll only make a promise when I know I am willing and able to keep it.
How many times has someone tried to extract a promise from you for something they want you to do? Do you tell them yes? ...and then break that promise? Why did you tell them yes when you knew you couldn't keep it? Because they're your buddy? Because they were so pitiful when they asked and you wanted to support them? Well, now you've blown your trust with them. Good thing you don't hold yourself to that standard when it comes to New Year's Resolutions. Or do you?
One reason I don't make New Year's Resolutions is I'm not disciplined enough. This may be because I'm ADHD, but it may not be. I don't make promises I can't keep because it's not fair to the person I made them too and it's not fair to me. By the way, it's also not fair for you to try to extract a promise from someone when they've already told you they'll do what they can, it's selfish on your part.
Another reason? I don't really have another reason. The first pretty much takes care of why I don't. And I don't try to deceive myself into believing otherwise or let myself be pushed into making a resolution I can't or won't keep.
How about you? How many resolutions have you made in your life? How many have you kept? Did you kick yourself for weeks for not keeping it? or did you just let it slide? If you kicked yourself for weeks, was it because you didn't keep it? or because you made it in the first place?
If you haven't figured it out yet, let me put it in plain language. I think New Year's Resolutions are artificial Bullshit. From my own anecdotal evidence of my family and friends, I can't think of anyone who has consistently made and kept New Year's Resolutions. A perfect example of two common ones are stop smoking and weight loss. Picking a day on the calender to stop smoking isn't the best way to stop, choosing within yourself, knowing you're ready, is the best time to stop smoking. With or without help. Losing weight is the same, it has to come from an inner decision not some superficial date on the calender or coerced promise.
Okay, since I'm not Dr. Laura I'll get off this soapbox. Wait! Dr. Laura is just the kind of person that will push you into making that promise/resolution that you aren't ready or able to keep. Fuck'em, do the best you can and what you can. When I do something for some one and they ask me why I did it I reply; "I do what I can when I can. And that's all any of us can do."
Okay, enough preaching.
Mojo Friday Guidelines
- If you comment you have to recommend all comments. (in order to receive mojo you have to give mojo. It's only good mojo manners.)
- Everything you say may be taken as a joke (so if you ask a question, expect a silly answer)
- You must recommend the diary (and pimp it unapologetically)
- You don't have to comment to recommend.
- You can't steal my idea (right, like that ain't goin' to happen)
- Please, no pictures or YouTubes until after 300 comments. Now, after 300, use a little common courtesy and be responsible in the number.
- Mojo mojo mojo mojo, mojo mojo mojo
